Now that it's legal in Ohio, has anyone tried Draft King's "spend $5, get $200 free" deal?

Seems too good to be true.

Never been a gambler, but interested in seeing what I could do with that $200 making some small, conservative bets.

I thought I would be gung-ho for sports betting to be legal, but I haven’t made a single bet yet on any site.

I guess I’m mostly content to be in NFL pools and a fantasy golf league with friends. Those pools plus natural interest in the games keeps me from searching for more gambling outlets to get interested in games. Plus I verbally bet a game here and there with a friend to make it interesting.

Maybe I’ll dip my toes into the water a little bit once next College football season arrives.

It’s true, it’s true. Trust me …

yea I"m just looking to make a few bucks here and there on "sure things", hopefully living off that free $200 as far as it will take me. I"m not looking for the big scores.

Yep, signed up for five different apps for their free bets. All told, I’m up around $2,000 now. DraftKings and FanDuel are my favorite apps. Bet365 is ok and they give a lot of free bets to sign up. BetMGM and Barstool are just ok.

I’ve mostly just been making $10 bets on some parlays, but they also have these “boosted bets” that are basically free money, like Joe Burrow throws for 1+ yard or Cincinnati scores at least one point.

The one big score I did have was a 5 way parlay (including the game being tied at halftime) where $10 got me $1,340

The free bet promos are legit, just make sure you read the terms as you sign up to make sure you're doing it right

It's free money just be aware they're trying to hook you...

NFL playoffs are a fun time for it

There are 2 groups that will make money. The gambling sites and the radio, TV stations. I am listening to WLW now and have heard maybe 5 ads...

I'm not a gambler, other than a few bucks for an NCAA basketball bracket. I said it before, I'll continue to say it. It's a terrible idea and yet another way to:
A. go after people who can't handle money. We'll the gap between the haves and have nots grow
B. we will see increased situations of dishonesty in sports. It's not that it could happen, it WILL happen where college athletes get caught fixing games.
C. We are growing a younger generation who do not follow or root for teams. The follow players and play fantasy sports and now will gamble in sports. It will affect marriages, families and have a negative effect on both.

Look at Bernie Kosar, He got fired from his radio job for making a statement that he was betting $19,000 on the Browns to beat the Steelers. He's an employee of the Browns. Terrible decision.

For me, I've always loved watching and following sports without any financial stake involved. Why isn't that enough?

Bernie got fired because he actually placed a bet on the Browns, he didn't just make a statement. And as an employee, he HAD to know he's prohibited from making such a bet. I really like Bernie, but getting fired is 100% HIS fault.

I've been using Draft Kings and having fun with it. Took advantage of the "free money". Been placing mostly smaller betters and have been winning enough to make money. I cashed out $500 earlier this week and still left some money in my account to keep placing bets.

I completely agree on Bernie, and he either felt he was so privileged they wouldn't do anything to him, or he's simply not very smart. Glad you are enjoying draft kings. Let's just hope others have the restraint to just use the free money and it doesn't hook them into gambling their mortgage payment/ car payment money. I just have a feeling this isn't going to end well for some.

How much of your own money did you end up spending besides the initial $5?

I could absolutely see people getting themselves in too deep on these gambling sites. It's so easy to pull out my phone and drop $10 here or $20 there. Or $1,000 here or $2,000 there. I'm sure somebody with the Browns told Bernie he couldn't place that bet.

I've used some of the free money and made some minimal deposits to activate the free money.

I've done some sports betting in the past while travelling. Oddly, the one sport where I have been very successful is professional golf. I've just been so so on other stuff.

The easy sports betting stuff is dangerous, but the thing I think is far more dangerous is the online casinos permitted by some states like Pennsylvania. You can just hop on there and play table games like blackjack right into bankruptcy. I am a high roller on those, setting a limit of $10 in losses. LOL.

Not me, i only bet on Cock fighting.... lots of pissed off Roosters in Mercer County from helping to produce all those eggs......every Saturday night, you can find them fighting in barns over in the Maria Stein/ St Henry/ Fort Recovery area... and Sunday nights in Coldwater and Rockford area.....

you don't need no Draft Kings to place a bet at these places.....

Seems like many bettors prefer FanDuel. Will have to research further.

I find FanDuel to be the best interface to deal with. Plus, there's a fair amount of "boosted" bets on the app, meaning they'll give you better odds than the typical bet.

I personally am not a fan of sports gambling but it has been great for us in the sports business, keeps folks engaged in the games. Speaking of engaged in the games, to me the biggest game changer with using an ap as opposed to in person at a sports book are the prop bets. I was told that in a casino the best bet in the house is the pass line with odds at a crap table, for craps players how many folks at a crap table play just the pass line? All those other bets on the table are were the house makes its $s on the real estate. I have to think those bets on the over/under on pass yards for a quarter or results of an AB are much easier when you can place them through the ap. Anyone here big on prop bets yet?

Got into it for the Super Bowl. I hate the fact that every state is different and that your account with the same company doesn't transfer to other states. You have to open a new account in each state that offers it.

Turned $200 into $377 for the Super Bowl and playoffs leading up to it.

I had signed up with Tipico first and got the freebies for depositing at least $100 (got matched $200). Their algorithm updates and pulls lines so quickly it's a pain to live bet games. So I was in Kansas for the Super Bowl and signed up with BetMGM. Much easier site to work with. Their live betting updates without pulling lines unless there's a score or penalty (or injury, timeout for official review, etc that affects the game). Also their scoring updates are quicker than espn or any other score site I've come across.

When I was home that's when I found out about the state thing. Luckily I could withdraw my Kansas winnings while in Ohio. You just can't place bets. New account. This also sucks living in Ohio right near PA because BetMGM is available in both but I can't do anything with bets across the line.

I put in $200 on March 1st and made bets for the 2nd and am up to $1766 in the account after tonight. Was up to $1517 three nights ago but two bad nights sandwiched around a small winning day, put me down to $1004.

My winners tonight;

That $5 bet would've paid $2460.75 if Buffalo didn't fall apart at Philly and the Spurs had won in OT. Timberwolves losing in 2OT lost me $276.60. Should've cashed out about $100 but I let it ride.

I was pretty confident of the Celtics winning, going up early and leading by as much as 19. But the Blue Jackets game was a nail biter. I hedged a $100 bet plus points for CBJ +2.5 when they were down 1 but that second empty netter ruined the hedge but I won the two big bets by themselves anyways. So I'll eat the $100 loss. Also had Indiana -4.5 on my odds boost bet for $20 straight. Paid $57 with the win.

How many of you bet through a bookie until websites started offering the same thing? I'd love to know how many people are new to gambling vs gravitated from the black market.

To me only, it's nothing different than the neighborhood pusher giving a free hit so one will become addicted and continuously come back for more. People may have a gambling problem, but don't know it yet...just like the new person addicted to drugs. If you haven't gambled before, why begin now? Yep, it's house money, but that is until trip number two.

depends on if you stay disciplined. I took the free money and made some free bets on the Super Bowl. Haven’t opened the app since.

Never. Just squares in office pools which are mostly random. Made a few bets when I've been in Nevada. But nothing serious.

Live betting and parlays are the difference. Updating lines and in game betting make for a much different experience than making a bet once and leaving it with no ability to cash out or make new bets.

Also, parlays can turn a small bet into a huge payout with just a few games.

You didn't get this with a bookie. I could cash out now or let it snowball.

Because you're not betting against the house. You're betting against other people. The spread and money line odds are set by where 50-50 of the money is going. The sports book isn't gambling. They're putting one half of the people against the other half and collecting the vig. That's it. If they were gambling they could lose.

That's why lines move. Too much money going to one side the line moves to entice people to take the other side. People move the line and people are why the line is set where it is. And people are incredibly dumb.

I’m not hugely anti gambling. However, like drugs, alcohol, porn…it’s a vice. It’s dangerous to your moral and economic well-being and should be approached with caution.

If you have responsibility to a spouse and children, you should watch out.

It‘s of no interest to me. I grew up in a house where money wasn’t an issue, nor was money worshipped. I think I was well-served by that. No big “zing” for me when money is “on the line”.
