Southwest Ohio Division 1

With the tourney fast approaching I was wondering your guys sw d1 rankings. For me I have:
1. Moeller
2. Mason
3. Lakota West
4. Springboro
5. Beavercreek
I am interested to see how the tourney plays out with maxpreps doing the seeding
Maxpreps id not doing the seeding. Coaches will be voting for seeding.

Tough to disagree with this.

Clear cut top 2. Early season tie between them and a rematch could easily go either way.

Sizable gap to reach the next group. West only losses to Mason and Moeller. Beavercreek is tough to gauge -- pathetic schedule so far, we will learn more about them in end of season games against Centerville and Mason. Boro and Creek tied head to head so having them together makes sense.

East, Centerville, Turpin, Anderson, Little Miami....all capable of knocking out a team in the second group on a good day, but not a threat to actually win the region.

Two horse race

Agreed on 2 horse race. Calling Creek's SOS 'pathetic' is a lazy take. Also, Turpin and Anderson are no longer D1.

Creek: probably too harsh wording. Can only play the teams in front of you. Not a reflection of the team itself. However, creek has one of the richest soccer histories in SW Ohio. They also have the most recent (I believe) SW Ohio state championship. The other top teams in the area: Mason, Moeller, etc routinely craft a stacked schedule including Columbus and Cleveland powers. Creek's absence of that is noted. That's all.

Re: ECC teams. Thanks for the info. Haven't kept up with the specifics closely enough.

That Howland team was incredible. They did have a 0-0 tie with 8-5-4 Canfield (but also beat them 4-0...their worst loss). Only beat an awesome Bay 1-0 (very controversially) that also lost to Hoban 2-0. Also beat an excellent Shawnee team 3-0 in the state semis which lost 6-2 to Lexington. So I'm quibbling with your stat in an epic season.
My version sounded better but I also knew some one would double check. You win the No Prize sir! Check is in the mail!

FYI Howland would have beaten Bay in PKs anyways.

If that game was played for 20 more halves they certainly weren't scoring.

That coach is more predictable than my ex-wife. I can still see them them play the ball down the left and hump it into Brock Pickett for the 77th time in a row.

Also another fun stat? Howland never lost in a shootout under Brian Stiles.

Ask 2017 Lakeview, 2019 NDCL, 2022 Kenton or 2023 Mooney.

BTW, whos coming out of D3 from down that way? Is it Tipp city again?

All this talk about Moeller had me curious, so I went to watch them play St. Charles today at XU. Ugly 0-0 draw. Frankly, I was not impressed by Moe. Too much dribbling, lazy and sloppy passing, and really not much to threaten the St. Charles keeper. Moeller only went one deep in their bench (might have brought another kid in briefly) while St. C was subbing frequently. It reminded me of Moeller a few years ago where they stubbornly stuck with the starters regardless of how they were playing. Seem to be back to doing the same again. This team might make some noise next year, but if today is any indication, I don’t see them making it back to Columbus this year.

Lol! Appreciate you.

Stiles proved to be an unbelievable coach with teams having remarkably stingy defenses. Full respect. Game with Bay was likely the state championship game that year, and both teams were awesome. I'm sure you've seen these highlights:
. Phenomenal, phenomenal game. I have to tell you that I despised the penalty kick call. Unworthy of that game imo.

As for SW D3 this year, Cincinnati Indian Hill is on fire. They are #1 on Maxpreps, and they just walloped #2 Dayton Carroll, which has an awesome soccer tradition, 5-0 last week. IH was a state title contender last year but lost both games they played against Summit Country Day (once in the regular season and once in the regionals; 18-0-1 against everyone else).

Indian Hill or the field? I’m taking Indian Hill.

Moeller will be just fine. That was a very good St. Charles team that returned all starters from their state run last year, including the ECNL POY, Sullivan, who didn’t play vs. Iggy. Moeller lost 8 starters from last year, so a tie vs this team is a solid result.

Moeller is young and from what I’ve seen this year, their bench isn’t all that great. The young players for Moeller have deservedly earned their time. I wouldn’t be questioning this coaching staff’s decisions on playing time. Moe hasn’t lost since 2022, so they are doing something right.

No one fully expects this team to have the same run as last years team or even make it back to State this year. This year was supposed to be a bit of a rebuilding year. They have 2 club-playing forwards playing CB, a freshman back, and several sophomores and juniors playing significant roles. It’s crazy that they haven’t lost or have struggled more than they have this year. The kids have been incredibly resilient and the coaching staff has done a nice job putting the puzzle pieces together and getting these boys to believe in themselves. They’ve grown a ton.

Parents that question playing time also have to realize they only get to see the games. They don’t see the countless hours of training week in and week out, which goes a long way to determine playing time. Just because someone’s son is a senior, doesn’t mean they deserve to play. Also, some kids get better over 4 years while others regress. Playing time is never guaranteed, it’s earned …. A valuable life lesson and why sports is so special.

You seem to be close to this year’s program, so thanks for your insight. I was simply sharing what I observed yesterday. With what Moeller lost last year, I wasn’t expecting them to have the record they do at this stage of the season. That’s why I went to watch them play. They undoubtedly have some talent on the field.

Your point about playing time is fair, but I have to think that it’s a detriment to every kid and the team to grind starters into the ground during the season and then think they’ll be at their best in the tournament. But you know better. Moe has a reputation for playing a short bench and I don’t think it’s unfair to say that hurt them in their two runs to the finals. Reading between the lines of what you say, I’m guessing this year’s bench is epically weak or filled with bad attitudes. I’m a little surprised that a program like Moe isn’t attracting more than 11 field players that can contribute at least some minutes this late in the season, but as you say, playing time is earned, not guaranteed, so maybe the coaches are just limited in their options.

New Albany should be the only test this team faces in the remaining regular season. Maybe the shorter tournament due to the new divisions will be to this team’s advantage. I guess we’ll see what they do from here.

IMO D1 is as open as I have ever seen it. In southwest alone I think 10-12 teams could come out of the district. Yesterday alone you had Anderson beating springboro, moeller tying and centerville/st.x come down to the wire. I’m not sure you can count any team out this year.

Agreed Splus04. I think it’s probably a 4-5 horse race between Moe, Mason, West, Creek and Boro. X doesn’t have nearly the talent they’ve had in past years and the Elks have lost a ton. Sure they both could string a couple victories together or pull off an upset, but it’s hard seeing them make it out of the region. Little Miami may surprise someone as well. The parity this year is much more prevalent than years past when it was really just Moe, X and the Elks and everyone else on the fringes.

Keep in mind that D1 only has 64 teams in the tourney. Teams will be basically starting in the district semi-finals, so they better be ready to play that first game.

Cbus traditional has parity year in, year out. The northwest region is usually weak. And in the Northeast it’s Iggy, big gap, Medina, then everyone else.

What will be interesting this year, will be the split of Cbus into the central region and the Northeest / Northeast region. Will teams try and avoid Iggy? Making getting to State out of the Southwest and Central a gauntlet of a schedule.

I think seeding is next week, get your popcorn ready.

Little Miami is definitely an interesting team this year that no one in cincy probably wants to see early. Centerville probably has the toughest non conference schedule besides Iggy. They will be battle tested going into tournament for sure and coming out of Dayton Creek and Boro have some of the weakest schedules I have seen for a top tier team. That’s why they olay the game though. Centerville Beavercreek Tuesday will be a telling tale I believe in who can get out come tourney time. I watched St X Moeller and if St X could have finished in 1st half they have a real good chance of winning that game.

I would put Milford in the mix as well. Milford has some serious talent and just hasn’t played consistently. I attended their game against Little Miami and was impressed by both teams, but Milford was the better squad that night. The tournament is truly wide open.

I’m actually pleasantly surprised Mason is doing reasonably well this season - they also lost 7-8 starters from last year, including their entire midfield.

I agree with this - coming off a poor season last year, they lost the GMC POTY, their coach, and most of their top guys. However, they seem to be performing much better this year and have a fair chance of ending the regular season undefeated.

How will the tournament work this year? There are fewer games to be played in each division, but the tournament length is about the same as in past years. Will there be fewer games per week as compared to past years when there were just 3 divisions?

I agree with all assessments on Moeller this year. I didn't expect too much this season to be honest and they have for the most part played well. I do agree with some sloppy play which I struggle with sometimes. The reason could not only be inexperience ( they are young ) but these kids have never played together before and many of them have switched positions for the team to hopefully be better. There are days they look like its possible for another run and they are days where I fell like 5 or 6 teams in the region could put them out at any round of tournament. It they stick together I do believe next year could be a great run but also hold out hope for that this season.

Divisions 1 & 2 are generally off the first week after regular season. 3, 4, & 5 get through sectionals and then catch up with 1 & 2 in districts. Then the timing through the rest of the tournament remains aligned.

Moeller vs LaSalle was surprising and disappointing I would think from the Moeller side. Moe had won 6-2 vs LaSalle 3 weeks ago and couldn't find the net last night. Without seeing the stats I dont how many shots they had but it was a bunch. Game started with Moe attacking and missing opportunities and it never changed. IMO big props to LaSalle for how they played and you could tell it by their fans seeming very excited after the game for a tie while the Moe people clearly were disappointed or not happy. Maybe its a little slump but that is 2 game sin a row without a goal and an undefeated New Albany coming to town on Saturday. Moe and NA last 2 games have been 1-0 past 2 seasons so one goal will probably get it done. Moe needs to pick it back up before tourney starts with the new format and no easy wins to be had.

Do you think this could shake up the seeding if they lose to New Albany? I imagine either moeller or Mason will go up to the Columbus region to hopefully avoid each other until the state semi, but I don't know which one each will choose.

Seeding will be determined by noon on Saturday. I think coaches start voting today and closes Saturday morning. That way when coaches come together on Sunday for bracket placement, the seeding is already done.

It will be interesting to see which direction teams will go for sure.

Moeller beats New Albany 2-0 today at Xavier University. Game was very aggressive throughout , I still don't think Moeller is really playing at their highest level . Their defense was really good today but offensively I think they are still struggling. Consider that their 2 goals were scored by a seldom used player off the bench. Props to him he had a great day and came through big time in a big game. but when you look at the other angle of that it is now 3 games in a row that Moeller starters have not scored a goal. The lack of offense is concerning .

2024 SW Brackets | What do you guys think of this bracket? I'd have to imagine we would be either seeing a Mason vs Moeller rematch or Beavercreek vs Moeller rematch from the preseason. Interesting game to watch between Mason and Beavercreek on Saturday as I cannot imagine either team wants to show their full hand, but they both also would want to keep their undefeated record.

With Dayton only having 6 schools for D1, I think they should combine Dayton/Cincy and rank the teams all together.
I just don’t like that because of the travel. It’s bad enough to be a bottom seed and take a bad beating but to ride a school bus from Springfield to Cincy or vice versa and then ride home from a 15-0 embarrassment, that’s like rubbing salt into the wound. Blame OHSAA for going to 5 divisions but let’s keep travel time to a minimum.
