In case anybody is interested, SLC plays Grapevine on TV Thursday night. The game is carried on Fox Sports Net so it may be available around the country. Kick-off is at 7:30 pm central time.

SLC is 7-1 overall and 5-0 in district. Grapevine is 6-2 overall and 5-0 in district. The game will be played at Grapevine. Their stadium is 1/2 mile from SLC's Dragon Stadium. This will be Grapevine's first TV game. It's SLC's 3rd TV game this year. The game was originally scheduled for Friday night but was moved to Thursday to accomodate TV. Most SLC fans wish the game had remained on Friday.

The big question mark for SLC is their defense. The defense hasn't been great this year and now with all of the injuries (including two starting line backers) the defense has really been patched together with young players.

The SLC offense has been great. Two starting offensive linemen have been out since before the season started. Riley Dodge is completing 72% of his passes with 6 INTS and 27 passing TDs. Overall he has 2,599 yards of offense with 34 touchdowns through 8 games. Not bad considering he has been taken out in the 2nd quarter lately.

Will be interested to watch. I think the defense will keep SLC from repeating as state champions.

Are you really familiar with the SLC defense?

They have given up less than 11.8 points per game over the last 5 games (14.6 points per game if you include the 2 TDs Central scored against the SLC 3rd teamers late in the 4th qtr). Two of those five opponents will be playoff teams. That was done with SLC's all-state linebacker injured along with a few other defensive players.

I'm not saying SLC's defense is great, BUT I will say the defense is progressing nicely. I wouldn't be surprised if the defense steps up in the playoffs when they get some of the missing players back. We'll see.

My vote goes to Katy as the best team in Texas with SLC #2. It looks like both Katy and SLC will be in the 5A-2 playoff bracket.

I think I'd vote for Permian #1. They have done the most I think. Theyhave two top ten wins under their belt. What is on Katy/SLC's resume that is better than that?

Permian hasn't done much for years. SLC/Katy have proven themselves recently and they have beaten every Texas team they have faced this year. Most folks aren't ready to anoint Permian king just yet.

If the playoffs started today both Katy and SLC would be in 5A-2 with Permian in 5A-1 so we may not get the chance to know if what you say is true.

Going with that theory, Cedar Hill would not have been ranked last year or Arl. Bowie this year.

As far as what the teams have accomplished this year, it would be hard for me to rank anyone ahead of the Panthers now. I am biased though.

What does that have to do with it?

What does previous years have to do with 2007? We know all about SLC's defense. MWN put it on glaring display as did Rockwell.

I agree with you Pied. I think Permian has done the most this year. They dismantled Euless Trinity and Trinity has proven that they are still a power this year in TX.

I would go

1. Permian
2. Katy
3. SLC
4. Arlington Bowie

No, but when I look in the Dallas Morning News and see that the defense is not in the top 20 in the Metropex with the #20 team giving up 291 yards per game, then I think the defense is the achiles heal of SLC. The offense averaging 514 yards is dangerous.

I like and respect SLC, just don't think their defense will win a championship. I think they will struggle in the third round and not make it out of the Region. Still most team would be happy with such a year.

Well, no doubt all of you Texans will be rooting hard for SLC to lose and look relatively average within Texas. We shall see what happens....

I don't root for anyone to lose, only the opponent that Texas High is facing. Just my honest assessment. Defense wins championships and I don't think SLC has a championship defense.

actually the opposite

if slc storms through texas again and mnw stumbles, what does that say for texas football?

not much

My team is almost assuredly not making the post season, which is very sad considering they have a 50/50 shot, so I have no personal rooting interest this year.

I also do not want to see anyone lose, but would like to see runs from Permian(old school), Bowie/Martin(Arlington schools), or FM Marcus(local school and wife's ama mater).

As far as the game I was out for much of the first half, listening to it onthe radio. I did record it on the DVR, but doubt I'll watch. From what I hear and saw, it seemed pretty text book. Glad to see Tre Newton going off.

Every ranking that I've seen has Katy and SLC #1 and #2 (either order).

Here is the latest AP Poll.

1. Katy (14) 8-0
2. Southlake Carroll (6) 7-1
3. Allen 8-0
4. Galena Park North Shore 8-0
5. Odessa Permian 8-0
6. Arlington Bowie 8-0
7. Smithson Valley 7-1
8. Euless Trinity 7-1
9. Abilene 7-1
10. SA Madison 8-1

Grapevine isnt very good from what I saw.

Them being 2nd in their district tells me something about that district.

What do you think Katy/SLC has done at this point in the year to be ranked higher than Permian?

certainly grapevine played good for the first defensive and offensive series

slc had good pass protection, tre newton had big holes to rumble through, the slc defense swarmed to the ball and prevented much running room, pressured the qb, and had adequate to vg pass coverage

riley dodge was excellent as a runner ... very fast and ran for several first downs on like third and 15 or third and 20 ... hard to defend that

some of his passes were great but overall I was not impressed with him as a thrower

the receivers made a few circus catches but also dropped lots of easy passes, i was not overall impressed with the receivers either

grapevine seemed like they were playing in a daze after the first two series

a nice win for slc but it is hard to evaluate as grapevine was mediocre at best

i can see why mnw handled slc

Interesting evaluation.

It seems you liked the SLC defense (which most folks say is a weakness) but you didn't like the SLC passing offense (which most folks say is a huge strength). However, based on this one game, I can understand why you posted what you did.

To be honest, Riley Dodge seemed a little off on his throwing last night (lots of high passes). He still completed 65% of his passes for 246 yards (both below his season averages). Coming into the game he had completed 72% of his passes for the season.

It was good to see the SLC defense perform well. They held Grapevine to 14 points below their season average. The defense will get better when two starting linebackers return in a couple of weeks. (Derek Tomlin was an all-state sprinter last year and is probably the best defensive player on the team. He is expected back by the playoffs.)

Tre Newton had 162 yards on 18 carries. He has been averaging over 10 yards per carry recently so he was down a bit last night. Credit the Grapevine defense for that.

Slc Defense

The SLC defense is horrible. Many missed and even more arm tackles. They will get exposed again before the year is up.

Horrible? Considering all of the other horrific things you have said about SLC, I guess we can consider that a compliment from you.

SLC's defense was the best that Grapevine has faced all year based on both yards and points.

Heck, even Consumerman said some good things about the defense even as patched together as it was.

I watched the game and thought the same thing. The announcers were making this Grapevine team out to be really good in their pregame comments, but they didn't look like anything special to me.

I think Newton & Dodge looked great against them, though. Newton certainly passes the "look test." Riley looked a bit small for playing QB in college. It made sense to me that Newton is going to Texas, and Dodge is going to North Texas.

It would be nice to see them play Katy, and then you could get a better idea of how good they really are.
