Truly incredible that a 4:34 high school miler could go on to win Olympic 5000m gold! I once read (years ago!) a chapter about Schul (in a book of random American gold medalists), and it talked about his training in the winters at Miami U...with an indoor track (maybe above the basketball court) where he'd sprint straightaways and jog curves for miles. Much simpler times.

That's NOT mud. That's a wet, finely-ground red cinder track. It ain't the same. This has a lot of similarity to the clay courts at the French Open.

Bob Schul's Olympic teammate and bronze medalist in the 5000m, famed Oregon coach Bill Dellinger, passed away this week, only a year after Mr. Schul.
