Professional college football

Brave New World.

Former athletes dating back to 2016 who were denied opportunity to earn NIL could earn $2.7 billion from the settlement. The settlement would allow P5 colleges to pay current players NIL directly without an arms length middleman.

If the settlement is approved, the devil will be in the details. Amounts, percentages, who gets what. Will there be any caps between schools and conferences. Will recruiting be come even more of a wild west shootout. Will the rich get richer? Will non revenue sports survive?

This is the million dollar question (no pun intended). I mean how many athletes are we talking about since 2016? So, just doing some quick math, googled that there are 190,000 D1 college athletes per year, so since 2016, I conservatively estimated that's about 3 cycles (4 years) so that's 570,000 athletes since 2016 to split up $2.7 billion. That sound like alot of money, but what is it? $4,736.00 per person. That's it.

In my opinion the real purpose of this and similar pending lawsuits was to simply break the control of the NCAA. The mechanism of paying the aggrieved players is unclear. The mechanism of revenue sharing with current and future players is not spelled out. So that only certainty is that the NCAA surrendered.

Sadly, I see more chaos and uneven playing fields between the Ohio States and sisters of the poor. And what of non revenue sports and Title IX?

I fear the title of the OP is correct. Players will be unionized employees and a negotiated player agreement spelling out obligations of both sides will be the future.

All Division I athletes dating back to 2016 are eligible to receive a share as part of the settlement class. In exchange, athletes cannot sue the NCAA for other potential antitrust violations and must drop their complaints in three open cases: House v. NCAA, Hubbard v. NCAA and Carter v. NCAA.

This is the real detail of importance to me here.

Agreed to a big settlement because they (NCAA and co.) knew there was enormous risk of greater financial burden. They shut the door on that and we're now moving forward into the future of direct payment, and probably sooner than later, of player unionization and being contractually "employees" of their universities.

It of course makes no sense that a woman’s water polo player gets as much as a star wide receiver at Ohio State. So it makes complete sense that this is what they will end up doing.

Well, college sports was fun while it lasted. Used to enjoy football on hs football on Fri, college on Sat, and NFL on Sun. Now that greed has taken over and hs is also played on Thurs, college whenever, and NFL expanding to just about every day of the week; and, with college players now becoming nothing more than mercenaries, will the high schoolers be far behind?

Hear this every year, yet ratings for football remain sky high. I would rather have the Universities pay the athletes directly than the collectives. Is it worse that these athletes are getting paid above the table now than below the table as in the past? What this will lead to is super conferences and a regular season schedule like the NFL. No more OSU vs Bowling Green or Alabama vs Tennesse Chattanooga in the future, and there is plenty of cash to go around. I watch college football because of the athletes not because of the University Presidents.

Sure. What bothers me the most is the free agency aspect of college football. Ratings remain sky high, but the new system has just been introduced and the newer procedures are yet to come. Of course, the power teams will be okay. They should just establish a pro college league, where the players are paid by the admissions dept, eschew going to class ( getting rid of the charade), and just be employees. That will be fine.

The second tier conferences should have their own playoffs. Give them something legitimate to play for and create more interest.

Under the new rule, the corporate advertisements can be placed in three spots on the field: A single advertisement centered on the 50-yard line is allowed in addition to no more than two smaller flanking advertisements elsewhere on the field. This could be done on a game-by-game basis or for the whole season.

Uniforms are not far behind in my opinion. 👎

I think I can tolerate what is going on now because OSU is one of the top dogs. If I were a fan of one of the lesser programs, it would have been hard to be fully involved as a fan the way things were before NIL and all the conference expansions. Now the difference between the haves and the have nots is so great that the lesser programs have no hope of being relevant at any time.

All the cash that is “going around” is going to someone or some entity. There is no extra cash. So someone or some entity is going to not get money in order to pay NIL.

With all of the emphasis on NIL, transfer portal, and the pervasiveness of gambling, maybe it's time to revisit the story of Jake Olsen, the blind long snapper who lived out his childhood dream.

Good. Stop being so greedy. They can all take their bats and balls and don't let the door hit you in the arse
That’s kinda my thought. I never thought I would lose interest in college football…my greatest sports love, but this crap with NIL, transfer portal, professionalizing, far-flung conferences with league championships that will mean nothing due to a playoff system that will keep expanding? It just doesn’t do it for me. If this is what some younger fans have grown up with as college football, they’ll be the new target audience and the new college football will be all they know, so no problem keeping a fan base. But anyone who fell in love with college football due to the distinct conferences, regionalism, pageantry, polls, bowls, etc, will probably not much like what’s coming. And that’s okay. We’re the past, not the future.

I 100% agree. College football was one of my favorite loves. For many or all of the reasons you mentioned, it has ruined college football. I also did the same with the NFL. I completely lost my interest. There is no loyalty at all. They only care about $$$$$ and their next big contract. And you are also spot on with: we are the past, not the future. And the future of college football looks ugly, not genuine, very selfish and not team players, and lastly: most of the kids could care less about the University. If a better offer comes, they would be gone in a heartbeat. I wish every University had a rule that if you are not enrolled taking classes at 'said' university by your second year, you can not transfer in. Unless they pay the bill themselves. Maybe all the B.S. would stop.

That’s true for some, but not all. Most players hitting the portal aren’t starters or they’re Grad transfers. I agree the merc mentality of some hitting the portal is gross, but it’s a small %.

I'll stand by my post# 22. Especially regarding enrolling by your second year. It is a bunch of nonsense B.S. that is going on right now.

Amazing! We have found some common ground. I use to love Major league baseball. When they went to interleague play that pretty much did me in. Loss al the mystic that was left with the game.

Just remember, we are both fans of sports. Whether it be Ohio HS football, college football, MLB, etc... our interests and passions are the same. We love sports. We love a good conversation about sports. We could probably sit an enjoy food and talk sports all day. I know that I could. Have a great day.

An alternative viewpoint to some of the fan perspective here. There are any number of similar stories from not that long ago regarding roster management/over signing and those on the margins very much being year to year on scholarship and at serious risk of being cut loose for a better prospect by coaches with absolute control and zero loyalty to players.

Mercenaries are a problem — in particular IMO upwardly mobile mercenaries which screws over smaller programs and makes it impossible to compete with the big guys. However, for the most part the portal is making it easier for the marginal to find a landing spot or to find out they have no value elsewhere.

Tommy Tuberville ruined a lot of programs, including Cincinnati. That clip sums him up as a person/coach.
