Princeton/Georgetown NCAA Tournament Match

I'm not sure how many of you guys out there have had a chance to see college lacrosse played at a really high level, but I have to tell you that you should check it out live, if you ever get the chance. My wife & I saw Princeton play Georgetown at Georgetown on Saturday, and it was one of the most intense sporting matches I've ever seen.

It is a joy to watch lacrosse played at that high of a level in person. I've never been a big fan of watching lacrosse on TV, so I was a bit skeptical of going to see it live. However, I am hooked. It's too bad lacrosse really didn't take off until after I graduated from high school (and I played on one of the early boys volleyball club teams at Hilliard).

If you ever get a chance to see Hopkins/Maryland/UVa/Georgetown/Princeton/UNC or any of those kinds of lacrosse powerhouses play each other, I highly recommend it. Georgetown's stadium was packed on Saturday, although I admit it's not that big. I wasn't aware that there are places that really get big crowds for lacrosse.

I went to the Faceoff Classic this year at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium. Doubleheader; Princeton and Johns Hopkins in the opener went double overtime, Syracuse lost to Virginia 11-8 in the second game. A little over 20,000 fans in the seats. Nice day overall. They've got more than 60,000 tickets ALREADY SOLD for the Final Four in the same venue.

Cincinnati should go check out Baltimore to see how downtown is done right.

My favorite college event was the 2000 Final Four at Byrd Stadium (College Park, MD). Syracuse thumped Princeton 13-7 for their sixth title. Ryan Powell had three goals and two assists to tie his brother Casey's all-time SU scoring record with 287 career points. That was awesome.

LAX Crowds

 Unaware of big crowds for lacrosse? The men's NCAA D1 final four has been drawing 40M-50M+ crowds for past 5 years since moving to M&T stadium in Baltimore and continues to get bigger every year. Good college lacrosse at any level (D1,2,3) is one of the most exciting sports to watch either live or on television (IMO). Only problem is there isn't enough decent coverage and even less since ESPNU took most programming from CSTV.

High school games in hotbeds like NJ, Philie, and Baltimore also draw big crowds and frankly can be as exciting and well played as many D3 college games. The MIAA (Boy's Latin, St. Paul, McDonogh) have some incredible athletes and players and play their tournaments at college venues like Homewood often filling the stands for the semis and finals.

My biggest question is why there is so little support and attendance from students and fans for Ohio HS LAX competitions... I rarely see more than a few parents, players and girlfriends in the stands at most games. A few hot rivalries (Moe vs. St. X) and schools (Indian Hill) seem to draw more support but we need to talk up the game to get more fans in the seats!

a lot of schools dont get that extra push from the faculty for lacrosse games, where as they would for football or basketball. lacrosse is still considered growing out here...

It's been a while since I've been out to Annapolis, but I managed to con my wife into going out there for the day on Sunday. So, it will be Duke vs. UNC this weekend at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. That should be a good game with a lot of checking, which I think makes men's lacrosse more interesting to watch than the women's lacrosse.
