Playoffs R1: #7 Elder(5-5) vs. #10 Colerain(5-5)

In the Lakota West game, he and the Jyarie Brown kid got into it after Brown stole the ball from him mid-air. Nothing major, just minor shoving and in each other's face. Should have been off-setting penalties at worst but the ref only saw Willis retaliating and ejecting him.

I have never seen grown men be larger babies than the referee's in the Lakota West vs. Colerain. There were 6 or 7 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties called and I don't think a single one was legit other than maybe Brown and Willis deserving off-setting penalties. Bolden had one, Cutwright (might have been an assistant) had one, and kids were get them for literally complaining to themselves. Colerain got one for blocking to the whistle and then a few drives later the Tegshoba OL for West got one for blocking to the whistle. Colerain RB did a simple "who me" shrug of shoulder for a split second and you would have thought he threatened the referee the way he threw is flag, stared at the kid, and trudged over to make the call as if he had never seen such an atrocity as a kid with emotions.

Seriously, the most immature / self-important crew / make the game about them crew of referees I had ever seen in a game. Hopefully they aren't assigned to any DI or any playoff games.

I watched the 1st Quarter on youtube. There were already a few flags called. It seemed like the refs were calling some ticky tack personal fouls. I have not watched the rest yet. Colerain definitely outplayed Lakota West for the 1st quarter. I haven't seen the rest.

I think that answers the question. Willis will be back for Elder tomorrow.

On Offense, Elder is going to have get the ball out quickly. I doubt they’ll have much of a run game bw the Tackles, so use Screens as an extension of the run game.

They have mostly had to do that all season. They better double team Jarmon when he is blitzing. He can get to the QB so fast they can't even throw the ball away.

Man, I love Jarmon. One of my favorite LB's to play at Colerain. It's a real shame he's not bigger, because I'd love to see UC or someone give him a chance.

If Hambleton does dropback and the ball isn’t out by the count of 3, he needs to throw it away or take off. Don’t improvise or scramble. It’s not his fault, but the Colerain D will make him pay if he holds the ball too long.

I think Elder fans see Colerain’s record and think they’re not a “good” team. That’s not the case. This might be the best Defense in the city.

Colerain has two 1 point losses and 2 other close games with Lasalle and Lakota West. The only game they were never in was the St. X game. X was up 42-0 at halftime. Field position and turnovers were key for X. Similarly for Elder, if Elder can hold Colerain to 3 and out or only 1 first down a drive they can get good field position.

Generating a turnover(s) would be huge. Anytime you can steal a possession away from an Offense that eats up large chunks of time, that greatly boosts your chances to win.

Thanks for educating the ignorant members of Elder Nation. I really don’t know where we would be with out you.

Cool, keep being a d***. It’s just odd how little a Colerain v Elder playoff game is getting talked about. I can only assume it’s bc both teams have mediocre records, but the records are deceptive in both cases.

I'm not saying I agree, but here are likely a few reasons:
-Records for sure
-New playoff format - Colerain wouldn't be in the playoffs under the old format, Elder would be traveling to X
-Speaking of X, I think most people believe that this region still goes through the X/LW winner

I'm also wondering how the weather affects the crowd. The last time these two met at the Pit there were over 12,000 people there. With rain expected all day, plus Spectrum carrying the game, I'm wondering if there will be 6-7k there, negating some of the home field advantage for the Panthers.

Weather tomorrow from 6-11pm looks awful. Game on TV, I say no chance of 12,000 people tomorrow night. Really want Elder to Win, curious to see how they would play against X a second time. This will be a tough game in less then ideal conditions.

I'll go with a 21-14 Elder win. Yea the weather looks horrible, and the game will be on TV. It won't be a huge crowd. I hope I am wrong and there are 10,000 there.

Elder Win would certainly work for me too! I’m still debating on attending the Game. I would also love to see 10,000+ out in the rain for a Playoff Game.

Hopefully, the rain will be relatively light like last week.

It shouldn't be too bad. It will keep some fans away, but it shouldn't affect the offense much. Not ideal by any means, but it's football. Both teams have to play in it.

6,000 total is my guess.

Rain isn’t that bad as long as there’s no wind. IMO, wind is far & away the worst element to watch a game in. Even when it’s super cold, you can still find ways to get warm, but when there’s constant wind, you can never get comfortable.

Wind will not be an issue. It will be low 6-7mph.

Where is the game being shown tonight? I don't have spectrum, so if that's where it's broadcasted I don't have access. Will OHSAA be showing the game? I just got on their site and it's kind of unclear if they're showing it or not.

Never mind, sorry guys. I found the link to watch the game, looks like it is $9.99, here is the link if anyone needs it:

I often check Calpreps for match-up predictions.

It calls for a 21-19 win for Elder.

I have seen Colerain play once and Elder 3 times. I can see how Calpreps came up with the score. I hope my gut is right. I expect Ramsey to demonstrate he is the much better coach by formulating a winning game plan. If the guys execute on his plan I can see a 2 score win for the Panthers.

I think it would be a cool thing to see Ramsey get win 200 with his last son being a senior and Peyton helping out. Good luck to the Panthers tonight. It should be another great game at The Pit.

The Division I, Region 4 playoffs start off with a bang as Colerain heads to Elder for the Blitz 5 Game of the Week. The last two times these two teams met was in the Regional Championship two years ago. Elder came out on top in 2019 on their way to a state runner-up finish. A year earlier Colerain bested the Panthers on its way to a state runner-up campaign. The winner of this affair will have some excellent mojo on its side moving forward.

No. 10 COLERAIN CARDINALS (5-5) at No. 7 ELDER PANTHERS (5-5)
Kickoff: 7:00 p.m.
Elder Stadium, The Pit
Follow on Twitter @TSFootball

PLAYERS TO WATCH: The Colerain offense relies heavily on its rushing attack with senior running backs MJ Flowers, Amere Shannon and sophomore quarterback Zae Jennings. The trio has accounted for 90.3 percent of the team’s rushing yards (Flowers – 1,295, Jennings – 693; Shannon – 377) and 20 of their 22 touchdowns on the ground (Flowers – 15).

On defense, the Cardinals are giving up just 16.0 points per outing. What makes that special is the fact that Colerain has just seven takeaways and only 15.0 sacks all season. Senior Aaron Foster has a team high with four takeaways (three INTs, one FR). Classmate Lavert Jarmon leads the Cardinals with five sacks.

The focal point of Elder’s offense is senior Drew Ramsey. He has 95 receptions for 903 yards, 336 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns (12 rushing, two receiving). His 211 career catches are the most ever by a GCL player and in the top 20 all-time in Ohio history. Quarterback Ben Hambleton has thrown for 2,408 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Andrew Spinney (two FRs, two INTs) and Zack Gutekunst (three INTs, two FRs) have come up with nine of the Panthers’ 18 takeaways. Spinney also leads the squad with four sacks and 51 total tackles.

TEAM TRENDS: Something has to give. Colerain has never lost a first-round playoff game. Doug Ramsey is looking for his 200th win as head coach at Elder, and it is at “The Pit.”

Colerain’s five losses have come to teams that finished in the Top 7 of the final Blitz 5 Top 25 Rankings. The Cardinals averaged just 8.4 points per game in those defeats. The Cardinals have not beaten a team that has a record above .500 this season.

Elder has played a killer schedule. Their opponents are a combined 64-24 (.727 winning %). Seven of those teams (not including Beacon Hill, VA) lost three games or less. That has led to some intriguing numbers for the Panthers. In Elder’s five losses they are allowing 38.8 points per game (versus teams that are a combined 44-4, .913 winning %). In their five victories the Panthers are putting up 41.1 points per contest. Those teams are a combined 18-19 (.486 winning %).

HEAD COACHES:
Colerain: Shawn Cutright (22-10 at Colerain, third year; 22-10 overall, third year)

Elder: Doug Ramsey (199-93 at Elder, 26th year; 199-93 overall, 26th year)

PLAYOFF HISTORY:
Colerain (24th appearance, 46-24) – 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018 (State Runner-up), 2017 (Regional Champion), 2016, 2015 (Regional Champion), 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2008, 2007, 2006 (Regional Champion), 2005, 2004 (State Champion), 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000 (state semifinalist), 1998, 1995 (2 wins forfeited), 1994 (Regional Champion), Cardinals have never lost a first round playoff game.

Elder (23rd appearance, 40-20 overall) – 2021, 2020, 2019 (State Runner-up), 2018, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2009 (Regional Champion), 2008 (State Runner-up), 2007, 2004, 2003 (State Champion), 2002 (State Champion), 2001, 2000, 1999, 1996 (Regional Champion), 1995, 1991, 1989, 1988

COLERAIN’S KEYS TO VICTORY: The offense needs to step up and play equally as well if not better than the Cardinals’ defense has in big games. Playing mistake free is a must. Each offensive possession must be cherished. Running back MJ Flowers should get every opportunity to set the tone on the offensive side of the ball.

ELDER’S KEYS TO VICTORY: Get an early lead and make the Colerain offense prove they can keep up on the scoreboard. Then establishing the run will allow for high percentage throws to keep the clock moving after halftime. Letting the Cardinals stick around late is going to make for a dogfight in the fourth quarter.

Prediction: Elder 24, Colerain 17

This thread has 4,000 views more than the Lasalle and Football North thread already. There is a lot of interest. You know the Elder fans will be at the game, watching on tv, or listening to PSRN. The chatter is low, but the interest is high.

It’s raining decently hard right now, hope it lets up a bit come kickoff.
