Pickerington school board approves varsity status

Lacrosse will become an official varsity sport at Pickerington’s two high schools beginning next school year, according to a plan approved by the school board April 11.
Central and North both will have boys and girls varsity and junior varsity teams. In addition, the school board said it would consider making lacrosse a district sport for seventh- and eighth-graders in the future.
Lacrosse will change from a club activity to a district-managed sport. The change came about, in part, because the Ohio High School Athletic Association announced last June that it would sponsor lacrosse beginning with the 2016-17 school year.
In 2010, Central and North had separate boys teams for the first time after competing as a local club program for seven seasons. The two schools began having separate girls teams in 2011 after first putting together a club team in 2005.
Also in 2011, the Pickerington Lacrosse Association was formed to take over management of the programs at the high school level.
