Dayton daily news Springfield High School football coach Maurice Douglass used the postgame press conference after a 28-14 loss in the Division I state championship game on Friday to make a case for separate private and public state tournaments.​

Springfield, a public school, lost to a private school, Lakewood St. Edward, for the second straight year at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. Private schools have won 11 of the last 13 state titles in Division I with Pickerington Central’s championships in 2017 and 2019 being the only exception.

This was St. Edward’s sixth state championship since 2010.

Douglass was asked what the difference was between his program and St. Edwards and said, “It’s the fact that they have boys that they can go out and select from anywhere they want to, and they have the resources to back it up. We’re limited to what there is in Clark County. Everybody can be mad or whatever. It should be private championship, public championship because now you have equal balance. They’ve got a building full of dudes..”

Says the guy who brought in a QB and has dudes come and "practice" (ie tryout). Springfield got beat, simple as that. Didn't see him crying last week when he beat Moeller.
 
Wrong coach to be delivering that message. I still remember that 2011 D2 championship game. Avon, a closed enrollment public, had a formidable team with several eventual D1 college kids and a bunch of other kids who would play lower level college ball, but they were no match for that Trotwood-Madison roster Coach Mo had stacked. The entire secondary went D1. Even Glenville never matched that and they pumped out some great DBs. Coach Mo knows how to find players and compete with the big boys.
 
Coach Douglas should have done the 24 hour rule after a tough loss. He had a ridiculous tweet that said Ed’s got players from 38 countries and he was lobbing the separation bomb in all his press interaction afterward. To cjb’s point he is not going to get much sympathy from the local public school coaches either.

There is a lot to unpack from Mo’s tirade.

First of all, don’t complain because someone else does it better than you do. Coach Mo can recruit with the best of them.

Secondly, not all private schools excel in football, or even try. We all can see the ones that do, but you still have to do the work to build a solid program…private or public.

Thirdly, even coaches of closed enrollment publics really can’t complain. Those districts choose to be closed enrollment, so they really can’t complain about the advantages a private, or open enrollment public has, in attracting kids.

Fourthly (if that’s even a word), a family should be free to send their kid wherever they want that will take them, whether it’s St Edward or Springfield.

The bottom line is Coach Mo is just mad today because he lost to a school that does it better than him. And I do give credit to him, Coach Ginn and others out there who use football to help get kids to college. That is awesome! But c’mon Coach Mo…don’t complain about recruiting advantages.

From seeing some of the performances of Mo's teams in championship games, I believe he might benefit from competitive balancing of coaches.

Current political base in Ohio doesn’t support it 3 States are now in court to put private and public together those states also ha no school district boundaries, Ohio needs to eliminate the school boundaries and then you get rid of part of the problem

Therein lies a potential problem. If you split them, the privates are no longer under any oversight on recruiting. OHSAA does a poor job of it but at least there are guidelines and restrictions that you likely lose with a split.

Trotwood-Madison coach Maurice Douglass, who played for the Chicago Bears and New York Giants and is a graduate of Independence High School, is prohibited from coaching in practices and games for weeks three, four and five of the regular season.

The penalties against the football program at the suburban Dayton school also include the dismissal of an assistant coach, and two senior students have been declared ineligible from participating in sports for one year at any school that is a member of the association.

This is my biggest issue: You’re doing it better than we’re doing it, so therefore it’s a problem.

I don’t think the direct-recruiting potential is even the biggest consequence of separation.

It’s not hard to imagine a separation landscape where the private schools can (and many would) publish special programs with players’ heights/weights, GPA, ACT (and SAT) scores, ph#’s and e-mail addresses to be given to college recruiting coordinators for contests (open promotion and open invitation.) Cuts out a not-insignificant amount of time and money for the colleges, gets the kids more easily linked with far more schools, and the colleges crave high-academic profiles so in that sense it’s also Fish in a Barrel.

Not exactly something the publics would want to see happen!
