Spent the weekend and start of the week in Chicago taking in some Wheaton Thunder football - varsity and JV editions on Saturday and Monday nights, so the Power Rankings have been on hold
@csnider20 ... until now, that is.
The Big Game last week - CVCA at Triway - proved to be a Statement Game for the Royals, who dismantled the Titans 36-6. And that leads to ...
an Even Bigger Game this Friday night, when unbeaten and defending PAC Co-Champion Fairless visits Royals Stadium.
As you could have easily surmised, these two teams remain atop the Power Rankings heading into Week 6
1. Fairless (5-0, 2-0) (unchanged) - The Falcons passed their final tune-up for The Big Game at CVCA with big play after big play against Orrville last week. Carson Colucci threw three long second quarter touchdown passes. Brody Pumneo was on the receiving end of two of them - one for 35 yards and another 29-yard score, and Gavin Conley was on the business end of a 65-yard Colucci touchdown pass. Tack on a 45-yard Peter Killy touchdown scamper in the first quarter and a Luke Yoder 73-yard Pick-6 in the third quarter and it was too much for the Red Riders, with the Falcons cruising to a 42-14 victory. The Colucci aerial attack (11 for 15 for 183 yards and 3TDs vs. Orrville) will be the third straight test for the Royals secondary when the Falcons land on the east side of Wyoga Lake Road on Friday night. But the lingering question remains. Can they stop the run? In their only test in the season's first half, against Northwest, the Indians' Kyler Miraglia toted the rock 30 times for 171 yards. Miraglia is good. But the Royals' rushing attack is on another level. The other question for A.J. Sarbaugh's Falcons: can they win the big game? Going back to 2020, Fairless has won more games (20) than any other team in the PAC. Yet, the Falcons are 0-4 in "Big Games." A 17-12 loss to Northwest with a chance for a PAC championship on the line in 2020. Then, a head-scratching 28-17 loss to then winless VASJ in Round 1 of the playoffs that year. A year later, with a chance for the outright PAC championship,
a 37-13 loss to Triway. That was followed by a 35-14 home loss again in Round 1 of the 2021 playoffs against Poland Seminary. Yet, despite it all, unbeaten through half the season and 14-1 in the last two regular seasons, Fairless remains at the top of the list. For now.
2. CVCA (4-1, 2-0) (unchanged)
- The Royals have played in two straight PAC Game of the Week contests. The Instant Classic against Canton South was followed by a business-like road trip to Triway. What was thought to be a battle of contrasting styles turned into CVCA imposing its will on the Titans from the start. The Royals took the opening kickoff and went 80 yards. After a three-and-out by the Titans, they did it again. The onslaught was on and only interrupted once by Zack Miller's only touchdown pass of the night. The Triway quarterback was held in check a week after tossing six touchdown passes against Tuslaw. And perhaps more impressive, the Royals held Triway to just two yards rushing on the night. With all due respect to Kent Roosevelt, who had negative yards rushing in a Week 2 contest against CVCA, these weren't the Rough Riders (which as an aside, did anyone see that crazy Roosevelt-Copley 59-50 score? I digress). And what does it all mean for CVCA? Opportunity is knocking. Fairless sits on top of the PAC win ladder since 2020. But no program has more wins and has been more consistent since 2017 than CVCA. The Royals 39 wins since that season top Manchester by three, Fairless and Orrville by four, Northwest by seven and Triway by eight. Yet every one of those teams has something the Royals lack. A PAC championship during that time. CVCA has been consistently good. Yet they have not reached the top of the mountain. In fact, it's been 11 years since the 2011 Royals won a share of the conference championship. CVCA has never won the PAC outright. And while no one is winning the PAC on Friday night, one team will come out of the game with the inside track. CVCA will ride their bruising run game in the hopes that it's enough to rise to the top of the conference standings. Time will tell if they can pull it off.
3. Canton South (3-2, 1-1) (unchanged) - Poochie Snyder etched his name in the record books as the All-Time-Leading passer in Wildcats history last Friday against Manchester, as he engineered a 42-6 victory in a game that was over by halftime when South led 35-0. South gets Triway this week followed by a home date with Fairless one week from now. So, there's still time for South to control their own destiny ... if they get some help from the Falcons on Friday night. Lots of football left to be played and lots of time for Snyder to keep adding to his own records.
4. Northwest (3-2, 1-1) (+1) - Northwest is in the midst of a two-week easing of the schedule with Tuslaw last week (a 40-12 win) and Orrville on the schedule this week. That bumps the Indians up a spot in the Power Rankings. Last Friday night, the Indians jumped all over the Mustangs with a 20-point first quarter that was highlighted by Ethan Nickey's 78-yard punt return for a touchdown. Quarterback Chase Badger had perhaps his best night as a starter, throwing for 178 yards and a touchdown. Kyler Miraglia added two touchdowns (15 carries for 77 yards), and Noah Harper had a third quarter Pick-6. The schedule ramps up again starting next week when CVCA travels to Canal Fulton.
5. Triway (3-2, 1-1) (-1) - After spending most of August and September at home, the Titans head out on the road this week for just the second time this season, when they pay a visit to Canton South. The Titans have to circle the wagons after being soundly defeated a week ago. And the big question for the Titans is who will be behind center on Friday night. Zack Miller was unable to finish the CVCA game a week ago, and Cale Drown completed just one pass in relief, when the game was already well out of reach with the clock running. Hopefully Miller returns to finish out his senior season, but the schedule doesn't let up in the season's second half for the Titans, with a home bout with Northwest (Week 8) and a trip to Fairless a week later still on the docket.
6. Orrville (2-3, 1-1) (unchanged)
- Despite the 42-14 score, the Red Riders were respectable last Friday night against Fairless. 285 yards of total offense. 63 offensive plays. 121 yards on the ground. 164 through the air. They played the Falcons to a 14-14 draw in the second half, after being down 28-0 at halftime. Sawyer Hamsher had a 47-yard touchdown pass to senior Brett Besancon and Asiah Smith added another touchdown run (seven rushing touchdowns now in the last three weeks). The Red Riders will be underdogs again this week when Northwest comes for a visit. But if past performance is an indicator of future results, they should put up a good fight once again.
7. Tuslaw (2-3, 0-2) (unchanged)- Turn the page. Nothing prior to now matters. A big loss to Northwest a week ago. Nope. Doesn't matter. This. Is. The. Week. With the PAC losing streak now at 17 games, dating back to October 2019, winless Manchester is coming to town. Drew Pasteur has the Mustangs favored by 1. I know it's high school football. There is no wagering. But ... Bet. The. House! (Or as my wife tells me every time I utter such a thing ... Don't!). Anything can happen, of course. But if Mustangs AD Chris Lapish is reading this board, some advice. You might want to grease the goal posts.
8. Manchester (0-5, 0-2) (unchanged)
- I think I read earlier in this thread that the last time Manchester went winless, it was 1968. It was a year of national turmoil. MLK and RFK assassinated. There was war in Viet Nam. Apollo 8 orbited the moon. The first 747 jumbo jet took flight. And it was a long time ago. The Panthers can put all that history aside if they can just win on Friday night. It may be their last chance with Triway, Fairless, Northwest and CVCA still on the schedule.
It's been a fun first half of the season. Let the second half begin. Is it Friday yet?
