TV Ozark Season 4

I spent my weekend binge watching season 4 of this Netflick series (I didn't realize it was a 14 episode season). It confirmed to me who is the most vile, amoral of the characters on the show and also who is the most compassionate in his/her own way. An uptick in the body count compared to previous seasons.

I think the ending was fitting. You can’t have these “happy” endings when the protagonists are anti heroes.

The question is who was the victim of the shooting? I have my thoughts but I don't want to be a spoiler.
Good point. I thought I knew but have had second thoughts. Thing is its over so may never know. Probably the intent of the writers.

I would have liked it more if Mel was also pointing a gun at Wendy so that there were two gunmen, truly making it a cliffhanger ending.

I think it was clear Jonah shot Mel. Jonah had slightly made amends with Wendy. I can't see him shooting her at that point. And he certainly wasn't going to shoot Marty or Charlotte.

The showrunner basically confirms it was Mel here, that the point was that Jonah had finally come over to the "dark side" with the rest of the family. https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/05/ozark-finale-netflix

Mundy chose Jonah to get that final shot because he was the last Byrde to come around to the family’s criminality, after an estrangement spurred by Ben’s death. In a way, Mundy says, Jonah killing Mel signifies “the family being brought back together through this act of violence.”

The showrunner wanted to end the series on a note so unexpected that it took viewers a beat to process whether Jonah killing Mel is “a thing to cheer for or not.” He adds, “We wanted people to think about the reality of what happened, not just in the context of watching a TV show, but also in whatever reality these characters are going to keep living in.”

It's my guess that the ending was a case of matricide. Wendy has shown herself to be the most amoral person in the cast and the cause of many of the Byrds' crises. Jonah had recognized this and he knew that if Wendy lived the family's days were numbered.

Im not so sure they were thinking that deeply. I certainly wasn't. Probably just going for shock factor.

They maybe want to leave the ending up in the air until they see for sure which actors they have for the next step. Mel had his out and didn't take it. Mel is obsessive. They couldn't kill Wendy without also killing Mel. I think it's one or both.

Jonah killed Mel. In the beginning, just like the end, it was the Byrds. They (Marty and Wendy) always justified their moves by saying it was to "protect this family" and Jonah and Mom had made amends to a degree. The final scene was also a nod to Buddy. Someone was outwardly threatening a family member on their property. Time to go.

Three is one rich 17/18 year old casino magnate.

they probably should have developed that character more. He still has to deal with the Mexican Cartell without seeming a toady for the byrdes. That's going to come out of nowhere.

This is why I thought they got sloppy. The Sister taking over was a bad plot twist to avoid predictability.

I forgot about Three.
