Only A Small Number

The OHSAA has been in existence since 1907 (and held its first OHSAA-sponsored state championship event-- in track-- the next year, 1908). Only a small number of schools have ever won an OHSAA football championship (probably less than 100, considering there have only been ~245 championships awarded in 50 years, and ~10 schools have more than 80 of those titles between them, when you tally up Ig, MSML, Moeller, NC, Versailles, Coldwater, Kirtland, Mooney, SVSM, Hoban, Ed), relative to the very large number of high schools in the state (~700).

But, when you consider all of the many other OHSAA-sanctioned sports, many more schools have won a title in one sport or another-- say baseball, or track, or softball, or volleyball, or one of the more than a dozen OHSAA-sanctioned sports state championships-- so most schools have won something in an OHSAA state championship tournament. There are probably not many schools that have not won at least one OHSAA-sanctioned state championship; of that likely small number, one would imagine that most of those schools are relative newcomers--and thus have not had many years of competition, to win an OHSAA state championship. It makes me wonder, how many Ohio high schools that have been in existence since the OHSAA's founding in 1907 have yet to win an OHSAA-sanctioned state title? I would think that it is a relatively small number of those ~700 high schools in Ohio. I'd guess that less than ~100 of the current schools have never won an OHSAA state championship tournament of some sort.

Here are links to two lists of schools that have won OHSAA team state championships as of 9/7/2021 (including 111 schools that have won at least one football championship):

Ranked: https://ohsaaweb.blob.core.windows.net/files/Sports/Records/StateChampionsDatabasebyMost.pdf
Alphabetical: https://ohsaaweb.blob.core.windows.net/files/Sports/Records/StateChampionsDatabaseAlpha.pdf

Here is a summary:

I have a hard time believing that there are only 4. I searched 5 schools and 4 of them were not on the list. I can't believe that I was able to guess that many right off the top of my head.

There’s about 820 schools in the OHSAA . Over 200 have not won an OHSAA team state championship.

There seems to be a discrepancy in the data being reported-- I don't know who's correct, but GoingCoastal's data reference seems to suggest that there are 611 schools, with only 4 that have not ever won a team OHSAA state championship of some sort-- but then, your post indicates that there are over 800 schools, with over 200 that have never won such a championship... the first discrepancy would seem to be with the total number of high schools in Ohio-- perhaps the difference has to do with how many Ohio high schools (611, 820, some other number) have actually been around since the OHSAA started holding championships in 1908...

I think that the 4 teams shown with no championships slipped in inadvertently, as the OHSAA webpage says, "Listed below is an alphabetized list of schools that have won OHSAA team state championships in any sport." I believe their intent was to display only those schools with one or more championships. So, it's entirely possible that there is a large number of schools that have never won a championship.

My alma matter, Sidney, has been around for a long time, but just won their first OHSAA team title a few years ago in Bowling.

Massillon is the one that comes to mind. They have never won one.

Why not name names and start making a list? Name a school and everyone can provide information as to whether or not they have won one.

Hopefully, skins aren't so thin that this topic can't even be brought up.

Here are some schools that have zero OHSAA team titles:

Marysville been around a long time and first team title is not OHSAA recognize as the girls wrestling winning the Coaches Association girls state tournament last season is first team title. Several individual titles in wrestling, golf and I think a t&f event.

I think there are more schools without team tittles then with.

Off the top of my head in my county:
I can think of 5 out of 20 still in existence that never won a sanctioned team title (was 6 prior to this fall), nevermind the several others that did not win anything pre-consolidation/closure. At least 1 won a title pre-consolidation, but the consolidated descendent has yet to win a team title. However, I'd credit the predecessor's title as belonging to the consolidated school.

Pretty sure Montpelier has been around that long, and unless I'm missing one, has never won a title in anything.

Others in my general area that either have none or I'm not sure about (if anyone has info proving they have, feel free to update)- Edon, North Central, Stryker, Fayette, Evergreen, Swanton, Continental, Ottoville, Pandora-Gilboa.

West Clermont has never won one, but they’ve only existed about 4-5 years. Not sure if the consolidated Glen Este and Amelia ever did. I’ll have to check.

Followup, Amelia won a baseball title, Glen Este was shutout.

A few years ago, on JJ, a similar thing came up with Buckeye Valley. At the time they had not won a state title and it was generally felt that Bellpoint winning basketball titles pre-consolidation into what eventually became Buckeye Valley should count as a title won for BV.

My list of schools with no team OHSAA tournament titles. I tried to purge the closed, club, and non-OHSAA schools.

Had to laugh at Put-In-Bay....~30 total students. How would they even have sports in the winter when the ferry's dont run

I didn't know Uniontown Lake or GlenOak had a state championship. So it looks like every Federal League school has at least one. Green's only state title is the boys team track championship in 1986. I wouldn't be surprised if Green gets a state championship in girls golf soon, that program has been consistently top 10 in the state for about 5 years now.

Wasnt GlenOaks in baseball?

Keep in mind too that this list may include schools which have closed or consolidated. And they don’t list it by who it is now versus then. For example several of the Dayton schools like Roth and Roosevelt are long gone and some of the replacements have not won.

A few years ago, on JJ, a similar thing came up with Buckeye Valley. At the time they had not won a state title and it was generally felt that Bellpoint winning basketball titles pre-consolidation into what eventually became Buckeye Valley should count as a title won for BV.
That absolutely, positively does not count.

I would have guessed Ottoville having a state championship in boys or girls basketball by now? I know they had some great teams over the years.
