OHSAA Releases Updated Basketball RPI Rankings
RPI data will be used for postseason tournament seeding in February

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio High School Athletic Association released the updated statewide rankings for girls and boys basketball Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) on Wednesday. The RPI rankings will be used to determine seeding for the statewide district tournament draws, which are February 4 for girls and February 11 for boys.

The concept of using RPI to determine seeding was proposed by the Ohio Basketball Coaches Association (OHSBCA) and approved by the OHSAA Board of Directors last fall.

The RPI formula was recommended by the OHSBCA, adopted by the OHSAA and is calculated using scores entered into MaxPreps. The formula is comprised of 40 percent winning percentage, 35 percent opponent’s winning percentage, and 25 percent opponent's opponent's winning percentage. The winning team is required to enter the score into MaxPreps, or for out-of-state opponents, the Ohio school must enter the score if it is not entered by the out-of-state school.

The final reporting dates for scores to be entered and utilized in the RPI are 11:59 PM on February 2 for girls and February 9 for boys. As was the case previously, regular-season games continue after the tournament draw.

The school groupings are determined by how each of the OHSAA’s six District Athletic Boards set up the seeding for their specific district. The Central, East, Northeast and Southeast Districts put all the schools together in each division, while the Southwest District divides its schools into North and South groups, and the Northwest District divides its schools into smaller groups.

The OHSAA has utilized a version of RPI data to determine football playoff qualifiers since 1972. The OHSAA will continue to explore using RPI data to determine seeding in additional sports.

I assumed Feb 3rd games would count with the draw being Feb 4th. Guess not. With rescheduled games the program I’m at will have 14 games in by that deadline. Missing a whole 1/3 of the season towards seeding. Just silly!

That's very poor scheduling to have 7-8 games left to play with one week left in the season before tournament play begins on 2/10 if your school is in SW Ohio sectional---most schools in the GMC have 2-3 games that don't count in the seeding---at least 5 ECC schools will have played all of their 22 games count in the seedings, but then won't play a game for 10-14 days in the opening round of the tourney---noon on the day before the draw has always been the cut-off for games counting and OHSAA and Ohio Basketball Coaches Assn wanted to continue that so everyone would know 24 hours before the draw.

Correct, don't blame the OHSAA for stupid scheduling.

I mean I will blame them… Every team up here in the NW has at least 4-5 games in the back 13 days that don’t count. We have had two snow days that need re scheduled.

If the whole season counted there would be no argument. The re schedule would have been easy. However, due to the stupidity of games after 2/2 not counting the two teams which the games were postponed refuse to play us before 2/2 because they don’t want the loss. Now we have to pack 7 games in 13 days that don’t even count. You can blame our scheduling all you want. We want nothing more than a couple more chances at wins. But how this is set up gives our opponents zero incentive to oblige.

Also our Sectionals in the North don’t start until 2/22. All the teams around here play regular season games until 2-15. This is the big reason why up here it is hard to swallow that the last two weeks don’t count. It’s only a couple games for you guys. That is also quite a disparity 12 days a part for the start of Sectionals. ( 2/10 vs 2/22. )

Some random thoughts on the RPI...

1) This system will make coaches schedule teams that have good records against bad teams and not schedule tough games
2) The system hurts league's top teams and helps those in the middle and bottom. The opponent's strength of schedule is brought to the middle by any league schedule set-up.
3) All that being said, generally speaking the best teams are 'up top' and worst are at the bottom. There's not a lot of glaring "how are they so high/low" teams.

Any live video or update to the girls drawing today @ 2. I am curious to see the brackets and know they don’t always get uploaded until the following day

As for the RPI rankings, they definitely overrate Edgewood (Ashtabula) in DII. They would be no match for teams like West Branch, Gilmour, and Copley or even Howland and Canfield for that matter
