OHSAA Announces Winter Sports Divisional Breakdowns
New girls and boys basketball divisions utilize competitive balance; other sports in second year of two-year cycle

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio High School Athletic Association has announced the divisional breakdowns for the upcoming 2025-26 winter sports seasons. Girls and boys basketball divisions are the only new assignments compared to last season, as those two sports are subject to the OHSAA’s competitive balance process and recalculate divisions every season.

Divisional breakdowns remain the same next season for swimming, bowling and boys wrestling, which do not utilize competitive balance and will be in the second year of the two-year base enrollment cycle. Gymnastics, ice hockey and girls wrestling have one division.

Divisional breakdowns for the fall sports were announced on April 27 and May 1.

More about the OHSAA’s competitive balance process is available at: https://www.ohsaa.org/School-Resources/Competitive-Balance-Resource-Center

D2 is now the loaded division in NEO ... Mags drops down from 1, Hoban moves up from 3... wild.

It was said that the OHSAA are not allowing Magnificat, MND, and Seton move up to D1 this year. If that is in fact true, the D2 level is going to be loaded as a whole… IMO, everyone is behind Winton Woods until proven otherwise.

You are saying that OHSAA let Elder move up in the boys but is not allowing these 3 schools to move up in the girls. I am no supporter of OHSAA, but I find this very hard to believe.

Agreed. Don’t follow Elder but that’s what was said. I see better than I hear. Haven’t seen anything official from the school/team or OHSAA.

The telling factor will be if we see MND playing D2 after it's all said and done. I don’t see it in their blood to stay down at D2 unless forced to by not getting approved. I could be wrong.

To my understanding, Seton's athletic department moved them up last year. You'd think they would've done the same thing this year as well if they could have. Maybe they did and it wasn't approved.

There are schools that made an administrative error and missed the application deadline to move up and the OHSAA did not grant them a late request. Magnificat wanted to move up but they did not make the request in time.

Wadsworth made the request to move up, in time - and was granted it by the OHSAA.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like there's a good chance that could have been the issue with the other schools mentioned previously.

I personally don't see the harm in offering a grace period assuming it's not that complex.

I think that the option to move to D1 was made for schools like Purcell Marian in GBK or Richmond Heights in BBK, who had dominated a division over a multi-year period, not necessarily to try and go to a division with less competition.

If a school does feel like it is better for their team to move to D1, it’s pretty reasonable to be expected to do so in a timely manner, as the whole state is waiting for the divisions to be released and it is the type of thing that administrators should be “on the ball” with.

I believe the 'not in time' thing is true for all teams mentioned in the post above at least from what I heard.

If they wanted to move up and missed the deadline, someone needs to be held accountable. For schools like MND and Mag who are traditional powerhouses in D1 it feels like it would hurt them more than help them competing in D2. This is a huge mistake by someone!
