Next years 5 division thoughts?

Anyone hear anything? My thoughts were they are going to make D1 the top 64 schools then divide the remaining schools by 4. That would give 158 boys teams in each division except D1 and 146 girls teams in each division.

D1 will be top 12%. Other 4 divisions divided as equally as possible. based on last year numbers D1 boys 83/84 teams approx. 153 per other divisions. D1 girls 78 teams approximately 142/143 per division.

So if they just have 3 D1 regional meets with 25-30 full teams the prelim day is going to be a very long day and likely will include having to run a 3200 prelim.

Why not 4 D1 regionals? We all know most are in the Clev, Col, and Cin areas, but I can easily see some Col schools getting pulled together with the Tol D1s to form the 4th

Someone here posted that there is going to be 3. I agree there should be 4 with 2 in the Columbus area.

Texas doesn’t run a semifinal day. All finals, two classes each day. It is fine if that’s what people want. But, you should explain that when you make claims like “can easily be done in 3 days.”

Four Day State Meet: Day 1, Nest three divisions - 4x8 and semis. Day 2, Nest two divisions and semis. Day 3, finals for Day 1 divisions. Day 4, finals for Day 2 divisions. Set the groupings to balance anticipated attendance... wish it was four divisions rather than five so the schedules/time spans between events could be the same for all. Nesting two divisions (or three) would result in additional recovery time between events possibly improving the competitive balance between sprint and distance-oriented teams.

Thur - D4/D5 prelims & field events
Fri - D4/D5 finals in one session; D1-D3 prelims in a 2nd session; D2/D3 field events
Sat - D1-D3 finals in one session ; D1 field events

Not a fan of 12ish hr turnaround between D1,2,3 Prelims and Finals. Not a fan of D1 drawing the heat of day ...again.

One of the original proposals by the OATCCC was for 6 divisions and their layout for the state meet was 3 days. I would guess they do 5 divisions in 3, but we'll see......

Better than Texas heat? Not sure, but an interesting solution for distance-oriented schools like yours would be to run all the 3200s on Thursday evening. This is what happened when the 2-mile was introduced back in 1966. The 2-mile was run on a day preceding the main finals. That opens up a whole new ballgame!

I don't know... does Texas routinely go from 55F, overcast and wet, to sunny or stormy, 85F and humid, seemingly without a spring in between?
All I ask is a rotation, a periodic chance to run on schedule, in calmer, cooler conditions... and in the fall, on a less chopped-up course.

As it is, even "generational" talents struggle to compete on the back side of a distance double and scoring 3x is rare. The 300H, 400 and 800 are back-to-back-to-back so an elite mid guy can effectively compete in one of the three. On the other hand, a couple, or even one elite sprinter can carry a team to a state championship. Nesting multiple divisions (as in the OATCCC State Meet) and a four-day format permits a more equitable schedule and likely improved performances for athletes in all 17 events.

Didn’t D1 had the heat of the day every other year? That meant they got the cooler, morning weather every other year. D2 never got the early temps. I was never a fan of that plan.

Until the mid-2000s, all 3 divisions were rotated every year on a 3-year rotating cycle. You could look at state meet programs from 3 years prior to know exactly when you would compete.

Prior to that, at least for a while, they would do 1-2-3 one year and 3-2-1 the next. D2 was always in the middle of the day. Our coaches never like that.
