A Name, Image, and likeness deal could be coming to high school athletes in Ohio.

A referendum vote by high school principals is expected in May. It's a scaled-down version of the NCAA-approved NIL agreement.

The OHSAA version includes:

- Student-athletes cannot utilize the school name, mascots, and trademarks of properties of the OHSAA.

- Student-athletes cannot engage a NIL during team activities such as games, scrimmages, or practices.

- The schools cannot benefit financially from the students.

- Athletes cannot promote casinos, alcohol, or tobacco use.

-Athletes must disclose any NIL deal to school officials.

It’ll be interesting to see if this goes anywhere. NFHS has already come out strongly against NIL for high school athletes.

It’s a terrible idea. But my question is why is this being voted on and not changing the eligibility rules to all Nky/Indiana Students to play sports. If they think letting those kids play sports will create a competitive imbalance, they have no clue how badly NIL will exacerbate that disparity.

It’ll become legal to pay kids to go to your school. I know there’s already shady stuff that goes on behind the scenes, but that activity will explode when it becomes legal. All you have to do is look at the NCAA and what a cluster frig the transfer portal became after NIL passed.

And for the record, I think NCAA athletes should get paid for use of their image. I don’t see how you can argue it’s ok to use Kyle Rudolph’s face for NCAA 2010, but EA sports didn’t have to pay him a dime. However, there needs to be a stronger regulatory framework than what currently exists. It’s ridiculous that Lincoln Riley can cherry pick the best players from OU and bring them to USC.

What makes you think GWOC schools or OCC schools or any public school in Ohio is going to vote to allow GCL-S schools to get kids from IN and KY and TSJ/TCC to get kids from MI? That seems about as likely as getting the Saturday after Thanksgiving declared Bo Schembechler Day in Columbus.

NIL would definitely the wealthiest private schools the most.

How did KY schools get that rule passed?

Many rural areas near state lines in KY. Also a boy, girl and possibly it these days in KY are eligible to participate in Varsity Athletics from 7th-12th Grade. Apparently this is being Voted on by Principals because it’s gained enough traction to make it that far. The different state eligibility issue really doesn’t mean squat to many Ohio Schools.

I thought the only schools that really benefitted were Cov Cath pulling kids from Cincy and Trinity & X pulling kids from the New Albany, Indiana area.
