Music in Movies

Good movies/good movie scenes can also rejuvenate otherwise forgotten songs.

Look what Almost Famous did for Elton John’s Tiny Dancer, In Your Eyes became popular again after Say Anything, (both Cameron Crowe movies, btw), Goodfellas rejuvenated Layla, Wayne’s World brought Bohemian Rhapsody back to the masses. Come and Get Your Love and Hooked on a Feeling both had a comeback after Guardians of the Galaxy. Heck, GOTG, even made me love a song I hated because of its use in a scene with The Chain by Fleetwood Mac. To that, put any mediocre song in a good slow-motion scene and the combination can make it an awesome song lol, but that’s another thread. Not a movie, per se, but Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing had a major comeback on the radio after being used in the final Sorpranos episode.

Some others that I can recall:

Unchained Melody - Ghost
Stuck in the Middle with You - Reservoir Dogs
Wild Thing - Major League
Build Me Up Buttercup - Something About Mary
Do You Love Me - Dirty Dancing
All Star - Shrek
Pretty Woman - Pretty Woman

Michael Giacchino is making a nice name for himself as well.

I think I annoy my wife because when I'm watching a movie I can often tell who the composer is, or at least other things they have worked on. For example we were watching Super 8 the other day and at one point you can hear parts of Giacchino's work from Lost.

A favorite of mine is that in Avengers: Infinity War, you can hear a piece of Alan Silvestri's Back to the Future II score.

And then of course there's all kinds of examples in John Williams works, especially Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Well here’s one I never expected. I’m watching Gangs of New York and composer Howard Shore used part of his theme for “the one ring” early in Gangs of New York.

He would have been scoring Fellowship of the Ring and Gangs of New York back to back at this time as they were released almost exactly one year apart.

The best non-original soundtrack is that of American Graffiti. It illustrates the impact that music has in our everyday lives, especially as young adults.
I agree and in 2nd place with similar era music (some of the same songs) I would nominate The Sandlot.

Watching Predator and could instantly tell it was an Alan Silvestri score.

You can hear the similar themes in the Predator, Back to the Future and Avengers scores. There’s one riff he uses in all three that is very distinct.

Star Wars..so many incredible.

If you go look at John Williams’ body of work, it’s incredible how many of them were absolutely huge hit movies, and I absolutely don’t think it’s a coincidence that he happens to have scored that many hits. His music absolutely plays a part in why those movies were so successful.

Look on youtube and watch some of the live performances of his work. The Cantina song (I forget the real name) is so fun to watch...

The Imperial March...you can just see the strorm troopers..feel the atmosphere

A scene that hooked me on a show. The last time thru the chorus and the accompanying visual was a masterclass of foreshadowing.

Song to make any panther proud, regardless of color.

Pretty much anything composed by Henry Mancini for movies is outstanding. The Pink Panther theme song, the Peter Gunn theme song (mentioned earlier itt) and Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany's are three of his best.
