Mooney @ Ursuline

"He'll never play there"
It's Mooney week for the Irish! Mooney has played a tough schedule this year but they have still struggled to get wins so far. Throw in the tulmult of the coach getting beat up by a parent and it has been a rough season.

Ursuline has been running on all cylinders and seems poised to make a good run in the playoffs.

That being said, it's still Ursuline and Mooney. I expect the Cards best effort but I'm hoping the Irish win by 50. Thoughts?

50??? Your going for the jugular eh? Think I saw the Irish on Drew's site as a 33 point favorite... still think that's too many. I'm think like 38-13 or something like that.
I am loving this streak the Irish have been on with the cards. The big thing is stay injury free heading into the playoffs.

Do you know what player got in the fight? I tried to watch film to catch who wasn't there but it seemed most of their play makers were still on the field. I assume the child was suspended.

I'm not sure who it was. I heard whispers on what position it was but I'm not gonna say on here. I'll just say its not a prominent playmaking position.

This thread will probably remain quiet unfortunately. As big of an Ursuline fan that I am, I hate seeing Mooney like this. It’s too bad for these players they don’t get to experience a real Ursuline-Mooney experience. When both teams are humming, this is amongst the best rivalries in the state. It unfortunately hasn’t been that in some time now. Oh well. At least we’re on the good side of that problem.

Mooney's defense has played decent throughout much of the year, with exceptions of week 2 and 3 vs very good VASJ and Big Red squads. They will certainly look to make Ursuline work for points, much like they have the past couple of years (at least first half of last year). Mooney has become a heavy passing team this year. Will they be able to have sustained success passing against Ursuline without a significant rushing threat? It certainly won't be easy. Nonetheless, Mooney is right on the edge of making the playoffs or having their season end. A win guarantees them a playoff berth. A loss and they may sit home in week 11. Ursuline has to expect their best effort. Beat Mooney!

Mooney is in the playoffs regardless win or lose.

If they win
Most likely draw - @ streetsboro

If they win

They’ll get @glenville

Beating the red & gold 6 years straight would have been unimaginable not all that long ago. Who would have thought that after our big 20-13 shocker upset win in '19 that we'd have a chance to win 5 more in a row? Mooney will give us everything they've got as they always do. It's not like the old days when the entire city of Youngstown would shut down as thousands travelled to Rayen or South. Hell there's not much left of a city to shut down anymore. But it is still Cardinal Mooney Cardinals vs. Ursuline Irish! (Don't forget that while it is "Mooney Week" on Wick Avenue that it is also "Ursuline Week" on Erie Street!)

Where is eastyoungstown radcard, mothergoose and the goat YTOWN??

I can't speak for the others but I'm still here. I just have not posted too much about this season as I try to be positive on a public forum. Win or lose I have not posted much.
Probably at a crap game in the backroom of a certain barber shop?

I will admit to spending time at the tables at Mountaineer and I'm actually going to Rivers Casino later today. Not much street corner or back room craps anymore. :)

Mooney became more of a passing team really since Pelini became HC and of course with the presence of Ashton O'Brien at the QB spot the last 3 seasons. Mr. O'Brien is the school career leader in almost every passing category. The Cardinals have passed for more yardage than they have rushed for in the last two seasons. I have not seen official numbers so far this season.

I attended Mooney-Ursuline games long before I got to high school but I still remember rolling up to the school on Monday of Ursuline Week in my freshman year and seeing the entire school, inside and out, decorated in Red and Gold and the Beat Ursuline signs everywhere. I didn't know the extent of that week until that moment. I'm sure it was the same way on Wick Ave. We actually used to get a day off school when the Cardinals won, which then was more often than not.

Good luck to both teams.

In my time at Ursuline ('67-'71) we never got a day off but the place exploded whenever the shillelagh came "home!" Bonfire on Thursday nights and a 2 hour rally on Friday. Students wore green & gold (or else) on Fridays during football season but everyday during Mooney week. As a 14 year old freshmen I was absolutely dumbstruck by the intensity of it all. In those days we always played THE game on Saturday nights. Rayen was Ursuline's home field and South was Mooney's. Emotions ran deep but I honestly cannot recall a single "incident" occurring before, during, or after a game.

What happened to Gomez? I've only seen him play in maybe two games this year after the Steubenville game.

I couldn't agree more. I hate to see Mooney in this position. When the city was larger and especially when both teams were clicking on all cylinders (which was more often than not) the "Ursuline-Mooney experience" was truly something special. It showcased all the things we love about the valley: unmatched athletic prowess, working class grit, creativity, passion, and the belief that anything is possible. The rallies felt like rock concerts and the game felt like the super bowl. The future of this special tradition appears more precarious than ever, and so I am hoping we can get a few more memorable slug fests between the schools before all is said and done in this series. Best of luck to both schools, but when the closing bell sounds I hope that "Irish eyes are smiling." ☘️

"The rallies felt like rock concerts and the games were like the super bowl." This absolutely sums it up!

Do we think this will be WKBN gotw? I know it's rivalry week but they didn't get it last year. Hoping they go back to it. Ursuline is good for the viewership

In my senior year THE game was played at Rayen on a Sunday afternoon. It was the first HS game televised live in Youngstown. They played at Rayen on a Sunday afternoon the next season also. At that time there were always huge crowds no matter where or when the game was played.
