Mentor Football 2024

They had to go to OT to beat 0-5 Toledo St Johns after scoring 6 in regulation. I doubt they will be a tough opponent
Well that is good to know .. looking at St John’s schedule they play some good teams though. I saw some articles talking about river rouge making a run at states? Funny enough their local paper is also called the News Herald LOL.

River Rouge at Mentor

What: Non-conference game

When: 2 p.m., Sept. 28

Where: Jerome T. Osborne Stadium

Records: River Rouge 2-2, Mentor 5-0

Last week: Mentor def. Cleveland Heights, 35-27, Birmingham Brother Rice def. River Rouge, 14-7

For the record: Mentor has won 10 regular season games in a row dating back to last season. The challenge this week comes from a relatively unknown opponent from Michigan who has games scheduled this year against teams from Michigan, Ohio and Canada. … Mentor’s offense is something to see, let alone something to prepare for if you’re a defensive coordinator. The Cardinals have scored 35 or more points in four of their five games this season. Scotty Fox, West Virginia commit, has thrown for 1,098 yards and 14 touchdowns, with Justen Hodge (27 catches, 489 yards) and Austin VanHuss (15 catches, 333 yards) the top targets. RB Jackson Farley is having a spectacular season, rushing for 741 yards (with a gaudy 9.26-yard average) and catching 11 passes out of the backfield. The Cardinals’ defense has piled up 27 TFLs so far this season, with Spencer Barninger and Caden Clair leading the way. … River Rouge has a strong defense, highlighted by defensive lineman Jordin Farrow (Toledo commit) and cornerback DonPaul Keith (Western Illinois commit). Can the Panthers slow down the Cardinals’ runaway offense? … Mentor is ranked first in the Division I, Region 1 computer ratings. The Cardinals would like a win in this non-conference game heading back into GCC play next week against Shaker Heights.

Mentor played a home Saturday afternoon game for the first time in quite a while. The last time that comes to mind was a home victory in 2008 against Moeller.

Mentor's 47-21 win today showed many stretches of dominance on both sides of the ball. Offensively, there really was almost nothing that went wrong. A second half fumble and an inability to punch it in from the one on four straight plays to end the first half are about the only things that did go wrong. Other than that, Mentor's offense dominated in the passing and run game. The defense looked strong at times, especially when taking advantage of some miscues and forcing turnovers.

After the first five minutes of game time, I thought we were headed for running clock for the entire second half. River Rogue came up empty on their first two possessions, including Mentor's first interception of the day. The offense scored with ease, making it 14-0 before you knew it. The score ended up 27-7 at the half.

Things settled down for River Rogue in the 3rd quarter and they put together multiple drives that sliced up the defense. It was the second week in a row a very one dimensional offense was able to do that against Mentor. River Rogue did throw more than Cleveland Heights, but overall you could bet on a run from their QB or running back outside of some 3rd and longs. None of the three touchdowns they scored were in garbage time or against Mentor defensive backups. None of the skill players on River Rogue were anywhere near as talented as Marquise Davis, so the three touchdowns scored (and probably 250+ rushing yards) were a bit concerning for a defense that has aspirations to hang with and hopefully knock off St Edward.

I'm glad River Rogue was willing to help Mentor avoid a bye week. But if I were scheduling, there are some Ohio powerhouse programs (Massillon, Hoban, or Glenville) I would've rather seen Mentor play in Week 6 than this team from Michigan.

River Rogue were pretty good a few years back. If I’m not mistaken they made it to their title game. Pretty quality opponent all things considered. And thanks for getting a W against Michigan, we were 0-2. Heights and McK losing to King and Cass Tech respectively.

Cleveland Heights has River Rouge in Michigan next week. Both teams built similar , should be an interesting game.

Good assessment of the game. I have also been a little worried about the slow grind a bigger team can put on us , but I’ve noticed we don’t overly adjust , we still run two high , we are always prepared to deal with the pass.

Teams that want to slow grind just can’t win a shootout with us , and this Is what happens. We will either give up a 6 min drive for a TD , or stop them and we can score in 5-10 plays and our defense is right back on the field. Sometimes I think this wears the D down , but they will be conditioned that is for sure. 🤣

You’d have to call RR the favorite right?
I think so because they have a passing game. But if Davis can go off who knows.

RR did loose their big RB in the first quarter against Mentor with a shoulder injury, so I would imagine he makes them a much better team. Japaul Keith? He is 6’2” 225 . Not sure his status.

Whoa. Thats a big back. It’s getting easier and easier to key on Davis with no passing game.

I noticed one safety high more often than not today. One on one coverage with the receivers with the extra DB back for either pass or run. So it was an adjustment. But I still think they could’ve done more. I would like to see four guys in the line every time in situations like this.

Canton McKinley might beat Mentor. The Bulldogs lost to Avon by 7 points and a MI state power.Maybe we will find out in the Play-offs?
I would love to play McKinley in Week 13. Hope it works out that way. I would bet on Mentor but I don’t think it’s far fetched to say McKinley could win. Mentor is 6-0 (I think?) against the Pups in the 2000’s. Four playoff wins (2006, 2018, 2019, 2022) and the two regular season series in 2021 and 2022.

The #1 seed in Region 1 is up for grabs between Mentor and Perrysburg. Both are undefeated. Unlike Perrysburg, Mentor is a virtual lock to win their last four games. But if Perrysburg does win out, I fully expect them to leap Mentor for the top seed. That could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what happens with St Eds and even St Ignatius.

I'm not overly concerned with the Wildcats rematch, but I am not hoping for St Ignatius in a 1/16 matchup. Ignatius is currently the 16 seed and I seen no reason they will move up. Whether they stay the 16 or not depends on if the two winless teams behind them (Elyria and GlenOak) remain that way or not. Elyria is looking like 0-10 is a huge certainty. GlenOak could win a game, maybe two.

My greater concern is where St Eds ends up. I would strongly prefer they are on the complete opposite side of the bracket. Push the matchup out as as long as possible. This, unfortunately, is completely out of Mentor's control.

Right now the way Pasteur is predicting the season end he has Perrysburg loosing the last game and had Iggy not winning another and Glenn Oak beating Mans Sr. To get the 16 leaving Iggy out.

Based on his predictions ( Just fun to speculate so I know this isn’t gospel)

He has this as the top Bracket.

Is this Mentor's best chance in making a run to the state title game? For those that have been going to the games, is this a legit Mentor team?

I think we definitely have a chance to go deep , especially with R1 being down a bit. Here is my take on it.

Offense is very good , they move the ball fast and score quickly. It very hard for big physical teams to win a shootout with us. We also have a very good running game , so the offense can hit from anywhere on the field and the play action is very hard on defenses especially with the receivers we have this year two of which are long score threats at any time which both have multiple 70+ yard scores this year already. You have to account for both at all times. Even our close games this year were not close when you watched the game.

Defense is very solid and athletic, our two middle line backers are very good and physical. Our D line is good but tend to get moved off the ball by bigger lines , our DB’s have been surprisingly good but we haven’t really faced a passing attack like our offense can produce (although they face one of the best offenses every day in practice so this helps).

All in all if we continue to handle who we are supposed to handle and improve we should be able to make a solid run. One question mark is our schedule (even though pre season no one said it was soft ) but now everyone is calling it a cupcake schedule. With strongsville and Brunswick getting better we could face a challenge there but those teams may not have the horses so we will see. Will the teams we play prepare us for the post season grind vs tough teams , hard to tell.

Compared to what? They have made four state title games (06, 07, 13, 17) and some semifinal games too. So it isn't their best chance.

2006 was obviously the closest. 2013 wasn't too far. I actually think the 2019 team - a great defense with a super trio of Kipp, Floriea, and Trobel - was their best chance. They were very capable of winning state in Triv's final year. The offense just couldn't muster much of anything in the second half.

This current team has one serious obstacle to a state final appearance: St Edward. If they're good enough to beat the Eagles, they very well could be good enough to win it all. Thankfully St Eds is not quite as good as the previous few years. But they still have more talent (except QB), size, and speed than Mentor. Fox is the X factor, just like Mentor's QB play was the difference in other November matchups with talented opponents. Nobody in Ohio has had a better run of QB play than Mentor since 2000. It's probably not even close. That is their edge. A senior QB with lots of talent, experience, and the teammates to succeed.

This is a pretty loose generalization, I don’t know that they have more talent in every area but QB, especially this season. I think it’s a game either way , Hodge , VanHuss have 900 yards combined , Farley has 876 yards rushing .. and this Is through 6 games.

I know the response is “but the schedule “ doesn’t change the production, I don’t know I think we are at least as talented.

I got to see Mentor for the first last Saturday. I was impressed with their offense - even though the defense from River was mediocre at best. The concern for me is the defense. The Cards defense looked undersized IMO. River had some large linemen - but they were slow and constantly getting hurt and limping off. Even with that being said they were able to move the ball on the ground several drives. I know the polls have Mentor as the #1 team in Ohio and their region - but I'm not sure they pass the eye test. The kicker is a weapon that cannot be overlooked - but I have to think a healthy Ed's would be a tough match up, as would a healthy Heights. I think any team with a big athletic offensive line a solid running game could really give Mentor issues.

That’s fair. I doubt St Eds has a receiver as good as Hodge. Position by position, I am sure St Eds has the edge in talent, size, strength, and speed in 70% of the starting spots. Farley has been incredible. But St Eds has a super talented junior RB Brandon White that was the bell cow for a state championship team and has multiple D1 offers. Landry Brede at tackle is quite a talent for Mentor. But I imagine St Ed’s has an advantage on both sides of the line. But that gap has closed compared to the past few seasons.

Defensive line is a concern. They don’t have the size and effectiveness to stubbornly stick to the three man front scheme. But I have been saying for years that Mentor should catch up to the game of football and put four on the line. They need a bigger push up front to take off some of the pressure from linebackers.

My personal opinion is Mentor likes playing 3-4 or 3-3-5 in order to maintain a “bend, but not break” with more guys at the second or third level. I would rather just go to a 4-3 (or 4-2-5 on obvious passing downs).

It is true , big physical teams give us a challenge. But we have proven that the 3 yards and a Cloud of dust , score on a 7 min drive style teams can’t win a shootout with us because we can drive the field and score So quickly.

Ed’s with a much more balanced attack could be a different story as they have the ability to do both against us but I still like our chances.

I don’t know if he’s as good as Hodge, but junior Zach Hackleman might be the best we’ve had in a decade. White is out for the year, so Mentor will not have to worry about him this season. Ed’s may have an overall edge the on the lines, but it’s probably marginal. The interior of the offensive line has been a major deficiency. They are ok at tackle, but would be much off if they could move one of them to the inside.

Well...as you know defense matters. Even if Hackleman isn't quite as good as Hodge - he may look much better than Hodge in a game due to the defense that is matched up with him. For 20+ years, Mentor's biggest deficiency has been with their corners. When it goes on for that long, it isn't a player issue as much as it is a coaching issue. River Rogue is hardly a passing juggernaut. Still, when they went to the air they looked pretty good against Mentor. That wasn't a good sign. I didn't realize that White was out for the year. On top of the graduation of the trio of B10 lineman, that is a major difference from a season ago.

Mentor's offense is in good shape this season. It is the defense that is concerning. Cleveland Heights ran all over them in Week 5, yet Davis was stymied by Strongsville just a week later. The coaches and players really need to take two or three steps forward in the next 4-8 weeks if they want to seriously compete for the region and state titles.

Interesting takes on the opinions of defense. You play what you have. If you have 4 DL with some depth, you play a 4 man front. If you feel that you are somewhat undersized but faster, you play a 3 man front. A lot of decisions go into implementing a defense game to game and season to season. I trust this staff and have for years. Playing high school defense is about as tough as it gets.

Especially DI and not playing anyone both ways.
