Mentor played a home Saturday afternoon game for the first time in quite a while. The last time that comes to mind was a home victory in 2008 against Moeller.
Mentor's 47-21 win today showed many stretches of dominance on both sides of the ball. Offensively, there really was almost nothing that went wrong. A second half fumble and an inability to punch it in from the one on four straight plays to end the first half are about the only things that did go wrong. Other than that, Mentor's offense dominated in the passing and run game. The defense looked strong at times, especially when taking advantage of some miscues and forcing turnovers.
After the first five minutes of game time, I thought we were headed for running clock for the entire second half. River Rogue came up empty on their first two possessions, including Mentor's first interception of the day. The offense scored with ease, making it 14-0 before you knew it. The score ended up 27-7 at the half.
Things settled down for River Rogue in the 3rd quarter and they put together multiple drives that sliced up the defense. It was the second week in a row a very one dimensional offense was able to do that against Mentor. River Rogue did throw more than Cleveland Heights, but overall you could bet on a run from their QB or running back outside of some 3rd and longs. None of the three touchdowns they scored were in garbage time or against Mentor defensive backups. None of the skill players on River Rogue were anywhere near as talented as Marquise Davis, so the three touchdowns scored (and probably 250+ rushing yards) were a bit concerning for a defense that has aspirations to hang with and hopefully knock off St Edward.
I'm glad River Rogue was willing to help Mentor avoid a bye week. But if I were scheduling, there are some Ohio powerhouse programs (Massillon, Hoban, or Glenville) I would've rather seen Mentor play in Week 6 than this team from Michigan.
