Mason & Ross D1 districts

The only district record set yesterday was at the Ross D1 as Dashayla Worlaw (Cin. Mt. Healthy) cleared 5' 7", taking down the old record of 5' 6 1/2" of Annika Kinley (Lakota West) set in 2021.

The STRONG (20-30 mph) winds out of the west were very difficult for some of the running events, and the wind chill was well below 50 degrees F.

My coaching days are in my rearview mirror. I attended 3 HS track meets this spring. Best weather of the 3 meets was high 50s and light rain w/ the meet start time pushed back 90 min. due to a thunderstorm. Yes, that was the best of the 3. While I still love the sport, I do not miss coaching in the typical spring weather that is presented to us in NE Ohio.

Some district meets in NEO never got started on Wed. and will be run as timed finals on Fri. The district meet nearest to me took 5 hrs. to complete the running events mainly due to poor clerking. I'd been checking the live results all evening and hadn't seen any updates for awhile after the girls 4x100. At 8pm, I texted someone coaching at the meet and asked if they had called it a night. He said no, girls 400 prelims are running now. Ouch.

I started coaching in 1992, and I have my log of each meet since. This was the year with the most rainy days in my career. We also had 14 days where a meet or practice was delayed or canceled due to lightning.

Although it was another cool evening that started out breezy, winds died down to make for perfect 3200m weather at both meets, and both Mason & Ross D1 districts had new records set in the 3200m. Sprint times were held down a bit, but overall, it was a nice night. Here are the highlights of the two meets:

Mason D1
Boys
3200m - Dom Ellis (St. Xavier, Jr.) lowered the 16-year old district record by nearly 5 seconds in nearly running a sub-9:00 race with his 9:00.87 record. The old record was 9:05.44 by Mason's Zach Wills back in 2009. Teammate Alex Bruns followed-up in 2nd in 9:07.81. 5 guys ran sub 9:15.

100m/200m - Moeller's Matthew Fogler won the sprint double.

In the team title race, the Mighty Men of Moeller edged out host Mason by 1 point, 132 to 131, respectively.

Girls
In the team race, host Mason rolled-over the competition by nearly 100 points, 176 points to 78 for Milford & 76 for Loveland.

Ross D1
Boys
100m/200m - Hamilton's RJ Shepherd won the sprint double.

Update: I missed mentioning that the Lakota West boys' 4x200m team set a new district record of 1:26.38, lowering the old record by 0.60 seconds, also set by another Lakota West team back in 2008. The new team is Sam Afari (12), Finn Mason (12), Joel Nimoh (12), Kolyn Ogletree (11).

Lakota West turned back Oak Hills for the team win, 118 points to 81 points.

Girls
100mH/300mH - Lakota East's Mikaylah Chandler won the hurdles double.

3200m - Lakota West's Evelyn Prodoehl lowered the district record by nearly 3 seconds with her 10:31.37 win. In doing so, she took down an 18-year old district record of 10:34.32 by Oak Hill's Brooklyne Ridder back in 2007.

Pole Vault - St. Ursula Academy's super-soph, Rachel Johannesmeyer, equalled then set a new district record with vaults of 12' 0", and then 12' 4". The previous record was set 7 years ago by both Sarah Voit (McAuley, now defunct) and Lindsey Kluesner (Lakota East) in the same competition.

In the team race, Lakota East turned back school district rival Lakota West, 141.5 to 118 points, respectively.

I missed mentioning the new girls 4x800m record at the Ross D1 district. Lakota West's foursome of Alyese Caldwell Downing, Prashi Vatsai, Kaitlin Kaszubski, and Evelyn Prodoehl set a new district record of 9:24.87. That broke the 20-year old record of 9:25.9 MT by St. Ursula Academy back in 2005.

9:14 not even making it to Regionals is ridiculous. The new OHSAA Track Tournament format a welcome change, but a year too late for Mr. Zegarski from Little Miami.

The bad news is that if he grew up on the West Side of Cincinnati, he'd be moving on.
The good news is that he didn't have to grow up on the godforsaken West Side of Cincinnati.
