Little-noticed, but a New Ohio Frosh Boys' Shot Put Record - 57' 8" - Jonathan Culp III (Mineral Ridge)

Just noticed this from the Trumbul County Varsity meet at Lakeview HS, but Jonathan Culp III of Mineral Ridge set a new Ohio Frosh record with his put of 57' 8", breaking the old standard of 55' 7 1/2" by Dylan Morlock (Creston Norwayne) in 2021.

UPDATE (5/23) - It appears that Dylan Morlock did not have the previous frosh record. I've found that Barry Walker (Lancaster) put 55' 9" at the 1979 TFA/USA age-group championships in June 1979 at Welcome Stadium.

I wonder if he knows it?

Probably not as OHSAA doesn't keep such records. The information, however, can be ascertained using Ohio MileSplit. As my all-time lists are far deeper than MileSplit, I can only think of one frosh of the past that may have put further than Culp, and that would've been Barry Walker out of Lancaster back in 1979. Barry was a well-accomplished age-group thrower back then and very busy. However, I can't find a mark of his with the 12 lb in 1979 that would match Culp's.

I currently have 167 boys who've put the 12 lb shot 60 feet or better outdoors in Ohio since the first in 1963.

I coached in the same conference with Lancaster during Barry Walker's HS years. They had a stand alone freshman-only school during that time. OHSAA did not allow freshmen to participate in varsity/jv sports if they were not housed in the same building as the other HS students. It may even be possible that freshmen only at that time did not throw a 12 pound shot in competition. I know he threw 62-63' as a sophomore because we had a 60'+ senior who Barry beat regularly, so it is quite possible that he threw 57'+ as a freshman. His marks would be in freshman only competition and difficult to find. Maybe the Lancaster coach can add more and clarify if I have things right.

Thanks for that input. I know Barry put 63' 8 3/4" his soph year in 1980. Like you said, his frosh year in 1979 was with Stanberry JrH and put the 8-lb shot regularly during the scholastic season. It was in the summer season that he put both the 8-lb/4kg & 12-lb shots in age-group competition, which is where I draw my information from. He had at least 2 12-lb shot competitions of 54' 4 3/4" and 55' 9" during June 1979, and at the Carmel Classic in Indiana (a regular summer classic back then), he had a 67' 5 3/4" & 197' 7" double with the 8-lb shot & 1kg discus.

Update: Walker also put 68' 3 1/2" at a meet at Towson State U., Maryland, in July 1979 with the 8-lb shot.

My understanding is that Stanbery was a freshman-only school, not a JHS, so they may have been throwing a 12 lb. shot most if not all of the season, not the 8 pound JHS shot. They competed in freshman only meets, not JHS meets. Again, hopefully a Lancaster coach may have additional information and can add to this.

From all the results I'm seeing for Stanberry back in the 1979 season, it appears pretty consistently he was putting the 8-lb shot and throwing the 1-kg discus. Barry was never on the national HS lists in 1979 (cut-offs were 60-0 1/2 & 178-3), so I can infer that he was using the Jr. High implements at Stanberry for at least all the meets I've found for Stanberry.
