Lakewood Lancers with third straight state title

Caught most of this game on TV earlier... two great teams, congrats to Lakewood. While the air horns seemed more limited, who was the "strike one two three" sweetie from Poland? Your team is good without you making yourself the center of attention. Egads lol

Went to the game. Great game..one pitch / one hit is all it takes Lakewood very good team as is Poland. Erin Gabrielle..one of the best around..Poland is very lucky to have her back for 2 more seasons! gonna be fun to watch

lakewood is a nice team and congrats on a 3rd straight state title. the folks from poland should not just expect that e. gabriel will get them back to the final game the next two years. seen many fine pitchers get one chance at the title and never get back there again. the mcneil girl from hoban comes to mind. teams get to the state semis and finals not just pitchers. if the offense was not able to plate a run against a decent (but by no means overpowering) pitcher for lakewood then they cannot count on getting bakc there next year. this season everything fell right for poland. they had about an easy a path as a team could have to akron. then they almost got knocked off by john glenn (actually lucky to advance) and then could not score a single run in the final. next year might not fall so lucky for them.
as for the sweetie who called out the strike one, two, three well if they do get back next year the good news is that their fan base will also be a year older. maybe that will help.

Stugots, no need to kick a team while they're down. No team "lucks" their way to the state final. Poland had a fine season and I'm sure they'll be tough in the next couple years once again

Stugots....root for your own team....if life is that bad you have to rank on others?...get a life loser.....Poland is a powerhouse and will be back and it will be on the back of their star pitcher again and there isn't anything YOU can do about it....so get ready for next year ,with 3 first team all-state players returning, I am passing you the salt....remember you just spew garbage all the time on this site..it is getting very old.....when you win like Poland there are always the losers like you who doubt and complain...

You don't know NE Ohio as I do. Listen, you can argue that Poland's 2 best players are the sophomores...EITHER team is going to have valleys and mountains to overcome next year to get through to the state tournament again. A team is not 30-2 for playing "soft" teams...

Lakewood’s Division II debut ends as champs

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
After winning back-to-back state titles in Division III, Lakewood moved up to Division II this season. In yesterday’s state softball championship at Akron’s Firestone Stadium, an underclassman provided all the offense as the Lancers won a third title in a row.

Freshman Kelsi Thompson smacked a home run and Alyssa Patznick scattered six hits as Lakewood defeated Poland Seminary 1-0.

Thompson’s homer, her third of the season, came on the first pitch in the bottom of the second off Erin Gabriel (21-1).

“It wasn’t very high, so I didn’t know if it was going to clear the fence,” Lakewood coach Criss Nadolson said. “We know she can hit it hard, and it just made it over in left field.”

Gabriel allowed five hits and struck out 12 Lakewood hitters.

“It’s huge to get ahead, especially against a pitcher like her,” Nadolson said. “I told them we’ve got plenty of runs if we don’t give them any.”

Poland Seminary (30-2) had plenty of chances against Patznick. The Warriors left eight runners on base and had runners in scoring position in four innings.

In the third, singles by Megan Hirschbeck and Gabriel gave the Warriors runners on first and second with one out. Jordan Palumbo grounded out and Nadolson decided to intentionally walk Jenna Modic to load the bases. Patznick got Adriana Sikora to ground out to end the inning.

“We scouted (Modic) and thought she was by far their best hitter, so we walked her,” Nadolson said. “If they score two runs, it could do you in with a game like this.”

Lakewood (29-5) tried to put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth. With Leah Starkey on second, Thompson hit a ground ball to shortstop Kalie Benson. The throw to first pulled Nicole White off the bag, and Starkey tried to score but was thrown out at the plate. Nadolson was coaching third and waved Starkey around.

“It was my mistake,” Nadolson said. “I kept Starkey going because I didn’t think (White) would be able to catch it clean and throw her out — but she had her dead.”

Patznick (22-3) struck out the first two batters in the seventh and, after allowing Gabriel her third single of the game, got Palumbo to ground out to end the game.

Lakewood definitely earned this state title
4th ranked Lakewood beat 3rd ranked LaGrange Keystone in the district championships. Then they beat 2nd ranked Greenville in the State Semi’s and beat 1st ranked Poland in the State finals. Not an easy road to the State Title

lakewood definately had the toughest route to win the state title. greenville's was also pretty tough having to get thru both urbana, and kings. poland on the other hand skated thru and i think it showed when they actually had to face a couple teams at the end who were good solid teams. both of them knocked the ball around and played good defense. if not for a silly error on the pitcher for john glenn poland would not have even made it to the final game. sometimes too easy does not prepare a team well for when it counts.

You're a trip Stugots... this isn't even worth it lol... Congrats to Poland on a fine season and tourney run. Most of us see the quality of competition throughout your year.

Really? Because the last time I checked, The score was 4-4 when that error happened...if there was no error, it would of been bases loaded with 2 outs. Get it right and leave your Southwestern Ohio bias alone...

IF you want to say Poland skated thru the tourney, then you would have to say Grove City did as well as they got hammered by "unranked" Perry 10-0 in 6 innings..

If it wasn't for the one pitch, who knows how long the game would of went or ended up. Both pitchers were great. So i don't really see your point of them earning it against a team that "skated" through the tourney should be seen as tough road...you're contradicting yourself, Mr. Troll

ok so let me ask you a question: before the state semi finals what were the two toughest teams that poland faced? they play a cupcake schedule all season long and they just so happened to have a easy path to akron. the easy path part is not their fault its just the way things fell, i understand that. but you have to admit the only game they played against a decent team in the tournament (before akron) was keystone and they were just average at best this year. nothing like the past few years. all i see is poland hanging their hat on the weekend tourny where they beat elyria. well elyria was looking to play a big rival of theirs later that day and they did not even start their number one. who else did they beat who even got past a district final?

Let me ask you a couple questions: Have you been to every single Poland game this year? With your rant of Poland not being so good with the competition they played, aren't you downgrading Hebron Lakewood's season as well? The final score was 1-0 on a single pitch. Poland had more hits. Poland had less errors. If you take away that pitch, the game was about even. So if you're saying Poland played "softer" teams, and the state championship game was as close as it was, then you're not just undergrading POLAND'S season, but also LAKEWOOD'S season...Get off of here, Mr. Troll...Just stop being SW Ohio bias and brag how good it is compared to NE Ohio just because your school didn't make it.

Lakewood has a good program when you can lose your top pitcher to graduation(at DI Akron now), make the jump up from DIII to DII, and still win a state championship. They could be back next year.

Poland is a team that had a few seniors and brings back a lot of experience and could be back next year. But the Youngstown District and especially the Akron Regonal, is really tough to get through. I can tell you that first hand...

Congrats to both schools on the very entertaining pitcher duel and BOTH had GREAT seasons...

wow arn"t we sensitive. first of all the comments i made have nothing to do with lakewood, or the fact that polans is a good team. i don"t remember making any statement about how god poland was or was not. obviously they made it to the final and thats all that really matters. my point was (and is) that poland had a very easy path thru the playoffs and they seemed to have a somewhat easy season schedule. the point was that maybe this did not prepare them well for the final couple games because when they played a few very solid teams they seemed to struggle. this is more a matter of fact then any kind of slight to poland. they have no control over their schedule. i realize that they have to play league games versus weak teams sometimes. its not like thats what they wanted to do, its the hand that they were dealt. which leads to my main point that the toughest two games that they played all year appeared to be the final two.
btw you continually refer to the game being decided (or defined) by only one pitch. that is a terrible slight to the pitcher from lakewood who threw perhaps 100 pitches that seemed to work just fine for them. maybe give credit where credit is due and stop making excuses for just one pitch because the reverse statement could be made that the game was decided by one swing of a freshmans bats vs what many said was the best pitcher in the state.
