Lake Catholic 2024

I wish VASJ and Lake would play each other this year. Both teams appear to be loaded based on the opinions of the fan bases.
Couldn't agree more. Would be a great matchup with a huge crowd.

Both VASJ and Lake are great institutions (as much as it pains me to admit it as a Joe's grad!). Please don't take the bait from the troll on this thread. He will go away if we ignore him.

Best of luck to the Cougars this year. Hoping they have a showdown (and win) against Glenville in the playoffs.

As a fan of all things St. Joes I’m offended by the stray the Tarblooders just caught. Lol

Well from an education and facilities standpoint Lake is better. VAsj has truly benefitted though from the voucher system. I was told recently they are about 80 percent voucher paid. That is not a sustainable model.
VASJ is making the investments from the money they received through donors, money they have raised from other events over time to enhance the building from the 20th century to the 21st century. They’re finally installing HVAC to replace the outdated boiler system. Replacing the windows, updating classrooms, STEM labs, and athletic facilities to bring it up to par compared to other schools in the area.

As I mentioned previously because of today’s age unless you make plenty of money to afford private school, most families sending their kids to a private school are using the voucher system because of how expensive tuition has gotten at this time. It’s happening everywhere unfortunately and schools are simply adjusting to the times to factor this in. Especially if the family resides in a poor/failing academically school district. It’s just the sad reality of today’s world.

That is the problem with guys like you. You believe everything that you read from the bathroom wall.

Well I suppose if Ohio Department of Education data on voucher is on bathroom wall that would be correct but in this case I don’t believe it is. Clearly you lack the ability to state facts so you resort to attacks. Maybe VAsj lacks a logic class so you should be forgiven.

Here’s the problem though, voucher dependency is not sustainable. Hard working families and wealthy families will go elsewhere when they see the rest of the school utilizing vouchers. These families will want fairness and it isn’t fair they pay fair full share and voucher families get a near full ride. This may seem trivial but it isn’t in reality. Trust me, every kid knows which kids are on vouchers. Also the endowment will be rapidly drained and not replaced by voucher families. Just watch!

I see DeSales advertises right on their website how to apply for Ed Choice “vouchers”. How does the “hard working” and “wealthy” families feel about your school promoting this “unfair practice” as you describe?

Get lost and go start a voucher thread

It’s weird. I’ve never seen this guy post on a DeSales thread. Always bashing Mentor and VASJ for some reason.

He must not of been at the 2001 Division III State Championship in Massillon when Lake beat his Stallions for the Title.

To be honest, not great!! It’s a double edged sword as we are seeing families that ten years ago would not have attended. On the other hand it is a reality that the endowment funds will be taxed.

Don't most - if not all private schools accept vouchers?
Yes but some schools are more dependent on it than others. DeSales and Lake use it but are not dependent on it VAsj and Clev Centr Catholic need it to keep the doors open. Again though this is not a sustainable model as the endowment is often used to make up the difference.

No offense but every private school in todays economy needs the vouchers to keep the doors open. If not for vouchers many schools would be on life support or closed. Do you think what happened at Notre Dame College was an isolated incident ? Expect more small colleges to be closing. Not many families nowadays have an extra $800 or so a year for high school. The vouchers are helping more then just inner city kids.

Lake Catholic's enrollment has tanked over the last 10 years, they need it.

Enrollment has declined but the families that have enrolled are fully invested and will support the endowment.

Sure they are, with the number of families in a nose dive. It is a diocese school, they are not Ignatius or Xavier or an elite prep school like Gilmour.

Lake Catholic 2013-2014 Enrollment: 873
Lake Catholic 2023-2024 Enrollment: 441

That doesn't look good or good for building an endowment. 80% of Catholic High Schools in Ohio would be closed on the verge of closure within the next 10 years based on these trends without the new universal school choice.

I hate when topics switch from sports to something else. VASJ has used the voucher program to build its enrollment. Parents view VASJ as a better option to the area publics. Lake needs to do the same thing. VASJ has had larger incoming classes then Lake for like 6 years in a row. Lake needs to adapt and change if it wants to survive long term. Lake also suffers from having very good public schools surrounding them - where VASJ has the opposite. Lake needs to be creative and get some of those kids from Willowick, Wickilffe, Euclid, etc to become Cougars. I've never been a big fan of Lake - but it would be a horrible tragedy if the school was to ever close.

It will not close, no issue there. Good people and a solid marketing team is now in place. They have had some unfortunate public relations issues over the last seven years but things are looking up.

I don't put a ton of stock into 7 on 7's. But I did hear that the passing game looks crisp and that the ball have rarely touched the ground with our starting offense group in the last few outings.

We know the offense will be electric but what is the outlook for the defense? How did that unit perform last year and will they be improved?

FWIW I obtained enrollment data from the ODE website and below is Lake's enrollment as reported by Lake to Columbus every October for the last 7 school years. These numbers are the school's total enrollment for grades 9-12.

October 2023 - 439
October 2022 - 448
October 2021 - 454
October 2020 - 478
October 2019 - 506
October 2018 - 592
October 2017 - 686
We may not be comparing the same data. This snapshot appears to reflect the total number of enrolled students. The newsletter data I shared (don't shoot the messenger, I'm relaying data) is THIS YEAR'S ENROLLMENT is up 40%.

Fbrox, well said.
side note: It's usually around this time every year someone posts a doom and gloom/the sky is falling about Lake's enrollment. Only thing missing this year is someone boasting about NDCL snatching all the Lake County kids. That person usually disappears from the forum sometime late October...
Question: do you know if Stanzi is back, coaching the QBs?

Ironmike - I want what’s best for Lake. Not sure why you keep talking about this newsletter. Like I told you on a previous post you ignored, you’re stating false information. Here is a screenshot of what you keep talking about. The “ENROLLMENT” is NOT up 40%. Now, read this again carefully…

And yes, Stanzi is on the staff again this season.

Lake has 0 chance of closing. What the hell happened to this thread?
