Jacob's Thoughts V.
“Myles Apart”
Happy first day of February to everyone! As I sit here writing the fifth edition of Jacob's Thoughts, I have a few things that have been on my mind this past week. By no surprise, it is football. The Ohio State football team is back in the news due to another coaching change, and the Cleveland Browns may be looking to trade one of their centerpieces in Myles Garrett.
Chip Kelly's departure from Ohio State as the offensive coordinator to take the same job in Las Vegas was not entirely unexpected. Throughout the season, rumors had been circulating that Kelly was looking to make a return to the NFL. What's surprising, however, is that Kelly went from being the head coach at UCLA to making less at Ohio State as the offensive coordinator, only to now become an NFL coach making the same amount of money he was making as a head coach. Perhaps Kelly's motivation was not to lead a program but rather to showcase his expansive playbook.
The Buckeyes' loss is a significant one, and the team will now be searching for a new coordinator to fill the void. This may be the top coordinator job in the country, given Ohio State's impressive arsenal of talent. Anyone who takes on this role will undoubtedly look impressive on anyone's resume, making it an attractive opportunity for aspiring head coaches. Several names have been floated as potential candidates, including former West Virginia head coach Neal Brown, former Ohio State OC and Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson, and Miami OC Shannon Dawson. It's also possible that Day may opt to promote from within, giving Brian Hartline the opportunity to call plays.
In other news, the Cleveland Browns are facing a difficult decision regarding the future of defensive end Myles Garrett. The all-pro and 2023 defensive player of the year has requested a trade, leaving the Browns to weigh their options carefully. While some may argue that the team should reciprocate Garrett's loyalty, I firmly believe that trading him would be a mistake. Garrett has been the lone bright spot for the Browns in recent years, and his departure would likely lead to more disappointing football. Instead, the Browns should consider cutting their losses with Watson, signing a veteran quarterback, and drafting a young player to develop.
Another possible scenario could see the Browns trading Garrett for another draft pick, which they could then pair with their existing picks. There's been talk of a talented duo from Boulder who are expected to go top 5 in the draft.
On a local note, the winter sports season is wrapping up at Teays Valley. The Lady Vikings basketball team will face off against Franklin Heights in the sectional round of the OHSAA playoffs on February 12, while the boy's basketball team will learn their opponent this Sunday. I'll be covering the girls' game against Canal Winchester tonight, as well as a TVHS Basketball program doubleheader in Newark on Friday. The girls' game tips off at 6:00 pm, followed by the boys' game at 7:30 pm.
In terms of upcoming content, I'm currently working on a TV boys and girls bowling article, as well as a team spotlight on the girls' team. As always, I appreciate the reads and look forward to sharing more articles and content with you in the future. Stay safe, everyone!
