On the Coaches Corner on the www.ohsaa.org, they have Akron Springfield looking for a new Head Football Coach

Akron Springfield hired John Kinsey to replace Coach David Bosko as the new Head Football Coach

 ;) :p  :D

This is IUDOGS signing off.

John Kinsey was hired this week as the new head varsity football coach at Coventry. So yes, the head football coaching job at Springfield Is now vacant.

So he just took the job at Springfield and quit before ever coaching a practice in order to take the job at a league rival school? And he did this during the baseball season at Springfield while he is their baseball coach? WOW.

So much for loyalty. Also, shame on Coventry. There had to plenty of other qualified candidates to choose from beside this one.

I'm not aware of the specifics of Kinsey's particular situation at Springfield, but Springfield has a sizeable budget deficit that they are working to eliminate. I've heard of at least 1 head coach at the school who has been RIFed. Could Kinsey be in that same boat?

It's a sad state of affairs when your new hire doesn't coach a single game and leaves to take a job at a neighboring district that hasn't had a .500 record since 2017. Springfield is a mess way beyond football.

Shame on Coventry? Why? It's in their best interest to hire who they feel is the best candidate, their concern is not what happens at Springfield. If there is shame to be levied it's on the coach for accepting a tough job and bailing on it before it started, although there may be mitigating factors at play as mentioned above. If Springfields financial issues are driving this then the shame lies on the community for not passing a levy for how many years now?

I don't see how Coventry did anything wrong here. If the guy applied, and Coventry felt he was the best candidate, then Coventry more than stayed in its lane by hiring him.
Exactly. They picked the guy they thought was best for their district. Maybe if Springfield got their priorities in order they'd be able to both acquire and retain their top choices.

Also, I don't begrudge anyone taking a better job and wonder how many of the critics would actually pass on a better job in their own lives.

Agree....and it obvious the way the contract was written that he was able to get out of it with no issues...all this falls on Springfield IMO

I beg to disagree. He wanted the HFC position at Springfield for awhile now. They gave it to him without looking outside. Perhaps union rules dictated the situation. Where's the loyalty to his employer and most improtantly to the kids?

Let's keep it real here.........Coventry needed an Intervention Specialist position filled and he is licensed in that area. Coventry did what the majority of districts do.......hire the holder of that license that happens to be a coach. BTW.....what is his record as a HFC?

1) From May 2006 to November 2020 every levy for new money for Springfield schools has failed. The district’s fiscal condition has deteriorated to a point that it is on the Ohio Department of Education’s fiscal caution list. If the fiscal situation doesn’t improve with new funds or cuts, the state will take control of the district’s finances.

2) The football program is 32-77 (29%) since 2010.

3) The district's state report cards have been less than stellar.

That's not a great recipe for staff or coach retention.

The district has many wonderful dedicated staff members that work tirelessly every day in the precarious situations outlined above but until the community steps up they can expect departures like this.

As bad as things seem for Springfield football right now, it has been worse in the past. They were worse from 2000-2009, when they went 17-83. From 2006-2008 they finished 0-10 three straight years. A 6-4 record in 2009 is Springfield football's only winning season since 1998. Since 1974, Springfield football has compiled a record of 171-300-2, for a total winning percentage of 36.3%. Almost unbelievably, the seven seasons from 1992-1998 account for ONE THIRD of their wins in the last 47 years. If you take out those seven years, they have a win percentage of 28.9% since 1974.

Nonetheless, you need to put some ethics in the equation by the Coventry district and the coach. As for the coach, I am not sure he even played HS football? He hasn't done anything and even this late will be replaced by someone that can do just as good as he would have. Karma is funny also and I hope it comes around.

Yes ethics, name a college coach that took a job, claimed to be all in then in May quit for another? I'll wait. If Coventry is a step up its such a very small step up that it didn't need done.

As someone very close to the situation, you are way off base. He is leaving because he most likely would not have a teaching job at SHS within a year or two. Hate to break it to you, but coaching doesn't pay the bills. He did what's best for his family. Coventry was able to offer security as a teacher, and a football job. Springfield couldn't do the same. No brainer.

As far as loyalty, this guy has been the HC of the baseball team, varsity assistant for basketball, and then helped the school again by doing JH basketball this past year because they couldn't find anybody. So coaching 3 sports for the district, and has done that for many years... I'd say that's pretty loyal.

You will soon find out how intelligent this guy is. He was already making a huge difference at Springfield. Weight room numbers were up (He had at least 15 kids out that haven't been in the past). Kinsey repainted the locker rooms with a few assistant coaches on his own time. He went out and mulched the school for team bonding and to make a difference. These are little things, but they add up. I've never been a fan of the Comets but I'm excited for them, and they got a great football mind. Don't be shocked when they win some games.
