Irv Cross

Many of you older folks will remember him, he was on the original NFL Today show on CBS, Irv Cross. He passed away yesterday. The NFL Today was really the first TV NFL pregame show and Irv, who was black, was a former player and really set the tone for the football player turned broadcaster. Think about how far that industry has gone in 40+ years. And you have to give CBS credit, even in the 70's you had host Brent Musburger, Irv Cross and female Phyllis George, along with Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder. That was it. 4 people, a minority and a female in the early stages of that show. I think the NFL and network television doesn't get enough credit for their progressive ways.

...as opposed to the male or non-binary Phyllis George? :)

I guess Jimmy the Greek didn't get the progressive memo.
He did not, but it was pretty bold...and hypocritical...of the NFL to be okay with a guy pushing gambling on a pregame show. They weren’t that far removed from the suspensions of Paul Hornung and Alex Karras at that point in time.
