Hilliard Darby District Thoughts?

Darby does a good job running this tournament. The size of the gym is way too small to hold a district tournament.

It's hard to grow the sport when there are not enough seats for immediate family.

Cernus vs. Ayoub = District semifinal and State Final. I want to see that match.

Josh Melms from Marysville is maybe having the best tournament so far. He's wrestled 2 very good matches.

All this talk about growing the sport and facilities yet nobody seems to mention the lack of live streaming. I am sure there are costs and televising rights involved (here is where OHSAA actually does the right thing). How about a simple pay per view/session? Just match the admission price of $10/session per live stream. No need for commentators. Simply put the camera on the mats with the kids names and the score like every other wrestling broadcast. Am I missing something here? Can it really be that hard and that cost prohibitive?

PS Good job Ozzie. I found the new layout much better than the previous "L" shaped layout.

It’s time to start broadcasting these events. I can stream Sectionals live but not Districts? Poor leadership.

Regarding the team race I think liberty is doing a great job but would need a Herculean backside to have any chance to take the title. I think Marysville will challenge for 2nd by the end of the day but won't get there.

Full football stadiums and we limit spectators for wrestling? Does that grow the sport? Yes, I respect volunteers. I don't have to agree with the decisions. Limiting capacity doesn't grow the sport. Kids are wrestling, so that's the most important thing happening.
Replying to my own post. Went to the tournament today. Didn't want to go because of perceived crowded situations and Covid rules. That isn't what happened. Yes, entries to floor were congested, but who cares. Kid's were allowed to roam, good job. Very, Very nice experience. No need for a larger space from my perspective. The finals had plenty of seating. All staff very friendly. Nice job Darby!

Agree. plenty of seats for the finals and I liked the new setup. Good job Darby. I did think it was too cool in the gym though. lol

Nice job Coffman, good luck to everyone next week.

Anyone going to comment on the results or more about Darbys curtains? I'm surprised Michelle Obamas shoes weren't discussed in this thread. Big shout to Smalley from Reynoldsburg, big day and came out of nowhere for those who don't know him. Battled injury past 2 years.

Venue was good. New setup worked well. It was kinda cold. Lol

There was also some wrestling. Our team did well. Some upsets, some great matches, it was fun.

I had to go out and get my coat from the truck, shocked at how cold it was. I like the new setup in the gym. 126 was loaded feel bad for Agin was also shocked to see back to back state champs get beat.

Shout out to Mount Vernon. They had a great weekend.

Tough Sat for Berlin, but they have something going over there. Their name is only going up further on the team board.

I had my concerns before the tournament began but honestly loved it at the end of the day.
I felt bad for the table workers who policed check-ins to mats. Didnt seem to have much back up and were catching some grief.
All around, solid weekend - kudos to Darby.

Dublin Coffman was on another level this year. Congrats to them on being the first D1 Central Ohio team to win Four straight District Titles. I was unaware that they are the first team until today, amazing accomplishment.

Coffman wrestling:
District Tournament Recap :

Team finishes 1st out of 47 teams

*13 District Qualifiers (all contributed to the point total)
* 10 District Placers
* 9 State Qualifiers
* 8 District Finalists

* 7 District Champs

What does this mean?
There were workers who facilitated check in for matches. Only the competitors and 2 coaches per competitor were allowed back to the mat space, past the warm up area.
On day 1, there was only the 1 worker on the one side and he was doing all check ins, and seemed to be left to police the amount of people who were going to the mats as well. I just saw people giving him attitude for essentially doing his job at times and felt bad.
He was doing a fine job and all the workers were as a whole.

I believe it was a central district scoring record as well breaking Liberty's 2017 mark. Hopefully some of the momentum can be carried over to the Schott next week!

Anyone know who McDanel's 3rd loss was to(I am aware of the 2 losses at Ironman)? Looking forward to the potential central district rematch in the 190 state final.

A few thoughts on the wrestling:

106- Havens is a beast and seems to be on a mission. He may be the favorite next week, but anyone who saw the 1/4 final match Friday night knows he's vulnerable in the round before weighouts. Great tourney by the Mt Vernon kid. He took it to Havens but just ran out of time, shook off the loss, then worked his way back manhandling Krysty in the blood round.
113- Rossselli is so fun to watch. High pace, technically sound, also seems to really enjoy wrestling!
120- DC kid, tall lanky, well-coached, really put together a great tourney.
126- What a bracket! Can't wait to see the Ayoub & Cernus rematch, next week. Both seemed to want to scramble, and the length and skill of Ayoub made the difference. Cheers to Agin on a great career!
132 - Ty Wilson, dominant- nothing else to say.
138- The word that comes to mind about Ishmael Ayoub is efficient. So smooth, and just does everything really really well.
144- Hope to see Blaze /Birden rematch for the 5th time this year? Birden is a special one.
150 - Knapp high-paced, brawler, fun to watch. The Reynoldsburg kid had a great tourney.
157 - Connor Euton is so solid in every position. Efficient & workmanlike. Cheers to the Cyclones. Great pickup.
165- Of all the talent on the DC team, Gartrell might just be the kid with the most college upside. So many attacks and lets it fly every match. Also just seems to give off the vibe that he loves the sport and loves to compete. Hats off to Hurley. So strong, great hips, and an all-around great wrestler. I'm head-scratching why he let Garteell up in the third, maybe out of respect.
175- Broskie is not flashy, but boy is he tough, and boy is he strong, and boy is he mean. He just took it to Powers- who is tough kid as nails also. Sorry, Shawn, I don't see him falling off any podiums any time soon.
190- Holy cow! Cam McD is the real deal. I like Shumate in the rematch and I predict they will both open up more and let it fly.
215- Matt Howard might be the strongest PFP kid in the state (or maybe even the world). Russo was in deep on 4 or 5 shots, but Howard fed him hips, broke his position, and really dominated the State Champ. 2 state champs go down in back-to-back matches. Wow!
HWT- Cheers to the Ucker, he's not particularly big, doesn't appear to be particularly strong or athletic, but keeps almost perfect position and manages his matches methodically and intelligently. The Bradley kid and the TV kid are absolutely monstrous-sized heavies, but Ucker found a way to win.

Cheers to the Darby crew for running such a great tourney!
Cheers to DC for 4 in a row, and for setting the scoring record with 247 points!
Cheers to all the Central District wrestlers, keep grinding fellas!

Rather than go through and make picks (have horses in the race) Ill comment on some of the predictions made by Boro...

Boro's Predictions: https://www.borofanohio.net/hdpreds22
Boro's 22 Almanac: https://www.borofanohio.net/2022BFA13.pdf
Brackets: https://www.baumspage.com/cedist/hi1/2021/2022 Brackets.htm

106

Consi Semi1: Jordan over Mokros
1st Place: Krysty over Havens
The last two spots look wide open!

-I also like Jordan to get out. Id take Havens over Krysty though.
Food for thought though, should Krysty win, does this put him into title contention? Already a threat to place imo.

120

Consi Semi1: Walls over Parks (I have Parks wrestling all the way back)
This weight could go VERY DIFFERENTLY!

-No kidding.
Id say the favorite is as close to a lock as you are going to get at this weight. 2-4 completely up in the air. Super interesting weight to watch. Not certain how much success we will have here as a district next week. I think that at least 1 state qualifier will emerge from match number 019, could be the winner or the loser.

126

QF3: Spurgeon over Gardner
QF4: Cerny over Agin
SFT: Ayoub over Cernus
SFB: Cerny over Spurgeon
Consi Semi1: Cernus over Agin
Consi Semi2: Spurgeon over Fowler (I have Fowler wrestling all the way back)
1st Place: Ayoub over Cerny
3rd Place: Cernus over Spurgeon

-Seems every few years something like this happens and there is an uproar that the draw system should be overhauled. I do not like this take. Should both Cernus and Ayoub win their final match (1st, 3rd), which I am 99% sure they will, they will be separated at the state level. Which is what their eyes are on anyway. Which is more important, a District title, or state title? Just ask Ty Wilson and Coach Huddle (They'd tell you they want to win it all, I'm sure.).
I like Cernus to win here. I am SUPER interested to see what happens in the bottom bracket. There is potential for tons of controversy. Insane weight.

138

QF2: Speakman over Sferrella (WIDE OPEN QTR)
QF3: Boothby over Witt
Consi Semi1: Witt over Speakman
Consi Semi2: Boothby over Numan

-In truth I was not too excited about this weight, but between last week and now looking at the bracket I am really interested.
If you told me Giordano, Speakman, or Sferrella made the Semi Final I would not be shocked. I actually like Witt over Boothby to make the bottom semi.
The go-to matches at this weight will be ultra-competitive. I have Speakman v Boothby, and Sferrella vs Witt. (Sferrella v Numan in the previous round - whew).
I'll take Boothby, and Sferrella to qualify.

157

QF1: Euton over Henderson
Consi Semi1: Halliday over Sauter (I have Sauter wrestling all the way back)
Consi Semi2: Goffin over Henderson

-I actually have Sauter making the Qtr, losing to Euton, then coming back to place.
I Also have Will over Goffin. Goffin/Sauter to go. I have Goffin winning.
Unfortunate bracketing here, because I do think Halliday could be a finalist if not for Euton.
Dropping down I think Halliday faces Henderson/Carl to go. I went with Henderson, who I then have losing to Halliday to go.
In the end you have Euton, Will, Halliday, and Goffin advancing to State.

There are a few more I might go through. We'll see!
#MyGuy

You nailed match #019.
