What is going on at Greenfield McClain? Head Coaches wife posted this on Facebook today. Board meeting is tonight...

The treatment of my husband since completing the Tigers second winning season in the past 12 years is unusual and borders on cruel to say the least. I’m thankful that the public will get an opportunity to hear him tonight, even if it is only for three minutes @ Buckskin School @7:00 P.M.

I've coached with him before at a different school and consider him to be a good friend and mentor. He maintains the highest professional standards and is a great role model and leader for kids, and he has managed to rebuild and win at several different schools including McClain. They hadn't had a winning season in 9 or 10 years and I believe they had 10-12 wins total in the three years prior to him taking the job and leading the program to two winning seasons in the past three years. They should have been primed to have a very good year next year with a lot of experience returning.

From what I understand he was recommended for renewal by the AD and the school board decided to intervene and attempt to non-renew him, and during the board meeting the school board tried to refuse him the opportunity to speak on his own behalf during the public participation part of the meeting and would only hear him while cowering behind the closed doors of executive session. Shameful. Add activist school boards that don't understand that they don't run the athletic department to the long list of reasons why coaches don't last long anymore at one stop and to why many don't last long period and leave coaching out of frustration.

Just a guess....

When you do things that need to be done to WIN.... feelings of people who are used to seeing their kid play(and team lose)...get hurt...and sometimes they are on the board, or have connections to the board

There is no question about Mr. Stewart's coaching ability. His people skills leave a lot to be desired. He was ejected from a game this season because of refusing to wear a mask. Although I am divided about the success of masks, he has to follow rules if he is to coach under OHSAA guidelines. Not the easiest coach to deal with on the sidelines.

It is my understanding that a different coach was to be approved as the new head coach at the board meeting. That seems to have not occurred, and the status of this job has been tabled until at least the next board meeting. Momentum seems to be swinging back in the current coach's favor for the time being.

And this makes the BOE look even worse. Absolutely no dog in this fight but do know of this coach and this school. The school once was a proud powerful program back in the 90’s and mid 2000’s I believe under legendary Coach Rick VanMater but since he retired they have never been the same. I may be wrong but I believe at that time a BOE member got nosey with that coach as well and look where that program is at now. The guy they wanted to hire I think was his JV coach so its quite the situation.

It's a weird situation as I understand it, but it seems that there are a few of these this time of the year for various reasons where the circumstances are odd and the truth seems to be stranger than fiction.

From what I'm seeing from the few people I know it seems that some in the community have pushed back and taken a stand in favor of the current coach as it seems things have been trending in the right direction; it probably doesn't hurt his cause that they return a ton and should be good next year. They seem to be upset that the administration/school board is trying to screw around with things now that it seems that things are trending in the right direction again.

Is the next Dante Jackson on that team? I think sometimes these smaller mid-sized communities forget the impact of incredible players and how you won’t always go as far without a guy like him coming through your program.

For the last several years, I think the main problem there has been running through coaches and having a revolving door every 2-3 years after having the same coach for a few decades. There hasn't been any consistency.

Not nearly that good, but they do have a really good player returning that will be a four year varsity player. That kid was by far their best offensive talent and he missed a decent chunk of this year, and I think they still ended up something like 13-8. With all of the other pieces they return, next year will probably be by far the best they've been since the Jackson years.

Did the game officials administer that ejection? ?

No, the ejection was done by the game administration - I believe it was the superintendent of the host school.

Yes it was the Superintendent of the host school. I saw a video on Facebook and heard several views. Many in crowd were unmasked and you could see as he was being escorted out most on his bench had mask down and even on opposing bench as well so it seemed as though there may have been something a little deeper going on between the two gentlemen. Not defending the coach at all because he knew the requirements set forth to be allowed to coach. He certainly doesn’t seem to shy away from controversy lol but he can coach.

Ejected by the superintendent? Lol. Interesting. I saw some very questionable adherence to the rules at several locations this year and never saw anyone go to the effort to attempt to remove anyone...including several tournament games were the coaches had their masks down nearly the entire time if they even had them on at all.

Some of my colleagues officiate in other states where all participants, including players, coaches, and game officials, had to be masked this past season...and the latter group was charged with policing the other two. :ROFLMAO:

After reading the article in the Times-Gazette out of Hillsboro and seeing the comments by the Superintendent just makes you wonder who actually made this decision in the first place. Sure seems like she is back tracking awfully hard.

It’s called playing in Jackson county

Read the article. The superintendent seems to be doing some major backtracking because she finally figured out that she wanted to do something that would have been wildly unpopular in the community. Make no mistake about it, the superintendent is the one that pushed hard for a change and it seems that she didn't expect to face any backlash for it.

She seems to have caved after it came to the attention of multiple board members (that seemed to have been clueless to the fact) that the coach they currently had employed was very highly qualified and accomplished on top of the coach being well liked in the community and having had been recommended for renewal by the AD.

Yes and she sure set up that young JV coach...Stewart is a darn good coach

Wondering if that guy's coaching career in the community just got killed. I'd think it would be hard to return after this fiasco. He's getting to eat having his name associated with the publicity of this stunt as opposed to the girls coach who seems to have been the super's original choice.

Glad to see the wrong get righted, at least for the time being. I could see Stewart coaching at McClain for 10-15 years before he calls it quits.

I thought I read said JV coach is in line to be the coach @ Adena, now, anyways!
