Interesting point. I realize the trepidation in talking about demographics but they very much influence popularity of various sports (and non-athletic clubs). I frequently see groups of Indian kids in Strongsville playing cricket. That's not something one saw 10-20 years ago.
North Olmsted has undergone a big demographic change and it has impacted their football program. Nothing wrong with pointing out that some communities have demographic makeups now that don’t gravitate to football.

Exactly. No judgment. It's a free country and if some prefer futbol, cricket, or other endeavor, totally up to them.

I agree. I lost track of them way back when the old Pioneer Conference folded (as I have ties to Brecksville and NoRo) and marvel at their demise. No explanation from me, just missing the days of the 80s and 90s when they were elite (or at least much better) programs.
I definitely miss those epic Pioneer Conference Week 10s between Strongsville and Brunswick back in the golden age.

I know he got hurt against Detroit MLK. I went over to the stream tonight for about 5 minutes and thought I saw him catch a screen pass for 20 yards but maybe that wasn't him.

If he was out, it makes the loss a little less bad (though he did nothing against King last week when he was in there)
Davis hurt his ankle in the first game against Troutwood Madison and came out
during the end of the first quarter, when he came out he had 84 yds rushing and the only touchdown. Coaches have been playing him sparingly ever since he sort of tweaked it again during the Detroit game, but they’ve been going back-and-forth for two other running backs, the freshman, Elijah Harris, and the senior Marcella Harris hasn’t been going well for those running backs they’re not quite fast enough or strong enough, in the meantime, Davis has been putting the ball and running the football once or twice again I’m predicting that he will have more playing time doing the Brunswick game and to start of the GCC conference season .

Cleveland Heights has been one of the more disappointing teams in NE Ohio this year.
Anybody care to offer some insight as to why? Hudson, 0-2 coming into the game, didn’t complete a pass all game and they still beat the Tigers. How is that possible? I get that Davis isn’t playing much but it’s not like they’re playing St Eds or Glenville. I didn’t watch a replay. Article says a freshman RB had a good game.

Considering the talent on this team, I can’t believe they have struggled like they have.

That freshman is Elijah Harris ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns.

So the running game is still solid with the freshman. Why the problems with that success overall then? I feel like if the running games struggled in Davis’ limited play, his injury is a viable excuse. But Harris played well.

Since I was there, I think I can offer some insight. Read my post earlier in this thread about it.

Hudson didn't complete a pass because passes were near impossible to complete in that rain. They tried a couple of times in the first half but the ball was too slippery. I don't recall them trying one in the second half because the rain really let loose in the 3rd qtr.

The key to the game for Hudson on offense was threefold: 1. Soph RB Reno Ferri. 2. The OL and 3. The running ability of the Hudson QB.

Ferri was a beast. He broke tackles, had great vision and balance and a surprising burst of speed. He is built like a fire hydrant. :) Short and stocky, but he can move. While the OL didn't over power, they were able to open up enough holes for the RB and QB to get through. And the Hudson QB was a big kid who could move for his size. Not sure where he came from and why we haven't seen more of him over the years. I'm not sure if the plays were called or if he had the option to decide to give the ball to Ferri or keep it for himself. But whomever was making the decision, did it well. Not knowing where the ball was going is what allowed the Hudson OL to catch the bigger Clev Hts DL off balance. There were several points in the game where Ferri was bottled up. Then the QB would keep and get a good run (had a couple of nice 10 to 20 yarders). Then once the DL had to worry about him, he'd give it to Ferri for a HUGE gain. I have some Hudson friends who follow them, but I'm not an expert. But what I do know is that there isn't much film on the QB that played against Clev Hts. That likely also played a role in what transpired.

Having said all of that, on a dry night, it might have been a totally different story. Clev Hts had receivers open all night. But either the ball was too wet to get a good throw off or too wet for the receivers to haul it in. It went both ways too though - Hudson dropped a couple of would be interceptions.

Also, I hate to be critical here, but Clev Hts coaches weren't at their best. In addition to their insistence on continuing to throw the ball, their time management was awful. And kicking to Ferri was really dumb after he had a nice return the first time. That bit them badly. I'd give the Clev Hts players a solid B and the coaches an F if I'm grading it.

I expect Clev Hts to rebound against Brunswick. Brunswick isn't as bad as their 0-3 record says they are. They have had a tough schedule so far. But Clev Hts has a ton of talent. Even if Marquise Davis doesn't play much again, Elijah Harris should be able to break a few big ones, especially if passing the ball is a threat with the nicer weather. I'd go to that one if I didn't have other plans. So, I may just have to watch that one online this weekend. I was really high on Clev Hts at the beginning of the season. Ton of talent and a top RB & a favorable schedule. Should be a fun team to watch the rest of the way. They won't make noise in the playoffs though unless Marquise gets fully healthy.

I watched the second half of the Cleveland Heights-Brunswick game (third CH game in a row I watched at least a little) and while they escaped with the 20-17 win, I'm still perplexed by the Tigers.

I didn't see any improvement on offense; actually it looked like a step backwards because they ran an inside handoff to one of the Harris' on it seemed like 20 of their 25ish second half snaps. They attempted one pass (woefully underthrown and picked off) and had two fumbles, losing one. The other one, the back got hit at the line but luckily their mammoth LT no. 77 picked it up and ran over a couple Brunswick kids and dragged 4-5 more for a 20 yard gain inside the Brunswick 10, leading to a TD.

They should have lost a third fumble (and maybe the game) when Elijah Harris looked like he was hit at the LOS on a 4th and goal from the 1 and fumbled into the endzone which was recovered by a CH lineman for a "touchdown." That should have been a touch back with Brunswick ball on the 20 up 17-13 with 3:30 left. Who knows if Brunswick would have been able to run out the clock but it looked like a blown call.

The Heights defense played pretty well but, from an outsider, the offense still seems like a mess even with an athletic QB and a future stud in Elijah Harris. Marquise Davis didn't play any snaps that I recall outside of punting (his last punt sealed the game ... kicked it straight up in the air and just so happened to hit a Brunswick lineman who was blocking and Heights jumped on it with less than a minute left).

I'm gonna say what I did after last week: just scrap the shotgun and go back to the wishbone. Even without Davis, they have the talent between Atkins and the Harris' to beat everyone on the rest of the schedule outside Mentor going back to it. Can probably beat everyone in R1 outside Mentor and Ed's running it. Sucks for their D1 WRs to be decoys, but that is all they are anyway in this spread offense.

Really talented team that is still playing very mediocre football.

Congrats to Euclid. I see they beat Shaker 14-10.

This league is Mentor way out in front and 6 teams that look like it will be pull a name out a hat when they face each other (yes, even Heights is in that boat for now).

He was impressive. Solid vision and great burst. Needs to get stronger, but that is obvious as he is only a freshman. He has a bright future ahead of him.
I'm sure he had over 100 yards just in the second half tonight (busting off a 65 yarder helps). But his best run was a 10-15 yarder where he put his shoulder down a trucked a Brunswick defender. That was definitely a physical run for a freshman playing varsity.

He is really fast. Nice to hear that he added some physicality to his game. He is pretty thin. Hope he likes eggs and peanut butter. Cause he has a scholarship waiting for him somewhere if he can add 40 lbs by 2026.

Yeah the people hyping Shaker and Medina before Mentor preseason look pretty stupid now

Hopefully it means Euclid is improving but shaker and heights look like disappointments so far and Strongsville and Brunswick remain crap unfortunately

I gotta tip the cap to Euclid. They have a sophomore defensive back who made an incredible one-handed INT and took it to the house. Looks like the Panthers are slowly yet steadily improving. Gotta say I expected more out of Shaker Heights. They could easily be 4-0 right now.

Here's a clip of the pick-six.

Ok not trying to start rumors but I have heard from a couple of different sources that Davis is pretty much done for the year and in very limited capacity, just working out and getting ready for college after collecting NIL money from Kentucky ?

Anyone else hear anything like this ? Would be a shame if this was the case ? I would think a competitor like Davis wouldn’t do that , or maybe the injury is enough to say “need to be healthy next season “.

Maybe there is some truth but I just wonder why play even a little bit of that is the case? I’m sure he’s taking it easy and most likely won’t play against Mentor. But I don’t see how this is just a “hey I will punt and hang out” situation.

Yeah that is where I am .. you can’t play half way , it’s very odd to me.

Got to see Strongsville and Benedictine last night. It was a really good game on both sides. Storm Miller had a rushing TD, and Vincent Roncone kicked a 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Here are some highlights of the game below:

He had 227 yds rushing against Brunswick.

That is impressive, especially for a freshman!

But Harris’ success makes me feel like Davis’ absence in running the ball isn’t as big of a deal with such high production behind him. So that begs the question - what is different about Heights last season to now? Struggling to beat a Brunswick team that may go 1-9 or 2-8 at best. Two losses already. The offense is averaging less than 20 points per game.

Like the week 10 matchups of Mentor /Euclid, Heights/Shaker and Brunswick /Strongsville

Medina and Lorain were just left ..

Also glad to have Medina and Heights in that first half of the schedule. They seem to be the biggest program threats to us now so good to have separation before the playoffs

Anybody know why Medina and Brunswick played on a Thursday?

How Medina has fallen. Reminds me of a low point of the Gray era when Mentor lost at home to Brunswick in 2021. I couldn’t believe my eyes that day.

Which also makes me think how far Brunswick had fallen. If losing to them means you hit rock bottom, what does that mean to be Brunswick?

Guessing most teams have some scheduling quirks to fit Lorain into the schedule.

Mentor plays at Brunswick again next year and hosts Strongsville again next year. Two times in a row for each
