Gerron Stokes

A football coaches salary can very by school district. Obviously a Dublin will pay better than most, a Massillon will pay top dollar but say a Millersport, not so much. Another way to increase a football coaches pay is offering them the Athletic Director or a Vice Principal position. If one can make $80,000+ coaching football, that’s not to bad of a living. If it’s in a rural area, it’s pretty good.

The ones who truly do not make much are the assistant coaches, The amount of $$$ they make ($5,000 or less) to coach isn’t that much especially if you do it by $$$ per hour. They put a lot of time in and work at least 6 and usually 7 days a week. Saturday you have film study from Friday night & the JV game and Sunday you have film study of the next weeks opponent & game planning for the upcoming game.

I don’t think it happens very often like this.
Correct- Maybe in smaller school districts, the majority of D1 districts the AD responsibilities would not allow him to coach as he needs to be at numerous other Fall sports events throughout the week.

I know money drives a lot of things but the job satisfaction is important also. To be able to successfully teach and coach in a tight knit community that values hard work and treating kids well has to a factor as well. I have to guess MAC coaches don’t make as much as many other parts of the state but the rewards must be immense.

Or they are smart enough to know that MAC coaching isn’t going to work outside the MAC. There are plenty of examples of this.

And now most hc’s expect the assistants to be at all the summer workouts in addition to their season commitment. It’s really year around for assistants to only make a few grand on a supplemental.

can you give some examples.... Nate Moore left Minster, won a couple titles at La SALLE and has one at Massillon...

I’m sure there are examples of this but I can not think of any. I’d assume most were not extremely successful in the MAC. Most of the successful MAC coaches seem to stay.

I can only think of one ‘successful’ MAC coach who did not succeed at their next stop(s).

Nate moore is the exception. Lot more chip Otten and geron stokes and Chris Schmidt who won big in the mac but were a disaster outside the MAC

Are you serious? Do you want a roster? Are you just making things up to be argumentative or just anti-stokes.
Chris Schmidt
Geron stokes
Chip Otten
Jeff Starkey
there are more (just use goggle). This is a legitimate and recognized high school football phenomenon. The MAC world isn’t the real world of coaching. I’ve heard stokes say this

These guys were state champs in the MAC. And not for long anywhere else.

Just to add fuel to the fire... The MAC has 150 total team state championships (plus 20 that schools won before becoming MAC members). Only (sarcasm) 43 of them are in football. It's a coach's dream to coach any sport at those schools.

Otten was HC 6 years at Middletown, 3 winning seasons. What has Middletown done since Otten. Otten was not a disaster at Middletown considering where he was coaching at.

I’m surprised you mention Stokes with these other coaches. You stated Stokes was the best coach at Dublin Coffman since the 1970’s. Surely the Dublin search committee knew of this MAC phenomenon yet they still selected Stokes as HC in 2020 overs in house 15+ year assistant coach who made it to the DII State semifinals & beat defending state champion Massillon in his 2nd year as HC at Big Walnut. Hopefully those in the 2020 Dublin search committee are not the same decision makers in 2024.

Otten was 26-34 at Middletown before he left to go back to his hometown Coldwater, his success there speaks for itself. Otten has 3 of the 9 winning seasons that Middletown has had over the last 30 years and I believe 3 of those season were due in large part to former Buckeye wr Jalin Marshall.

Honestly I do not know much about the other coaches you mentioned.

Yes the MAC is a very unique place. I think the kids in Dublin gave their best during Stokes tenure, it seems as though it was a bad fit between him & the Dublin community & administration.

or maybe he didn't have enough of the Jimmy and the joes.... that helps...

Definitely a factor. Surely Stokes would have done some research on Dublin Coffman before applying/taking the position. It was fairly well known that Coffman did not have some of its better classes coming up.

Neither Schmidt, nor Otten, nor Starkey were head coaches at their next stops, and yet you included them in your salty reply. Why? There have been three head coaches who have coached outside the MAC after winning state titles with MAC teams: Vic Whiting, who went 121-69 in 17 years at Canal Fulton Northwest, Nate Moore, who has done okay 😉 and Gerron Stokes, who AHM thought was pretty nifty.

Quite the recognized phenomenon 🤣

Stokes is a great coach and he’s going to work a lot better in a MAC environment.

MAC coaches wouldnt be the same winning coaches outside the MAC. There are countless examples of this. Coaches like Goodwin and Schulte probably recognize this. Coaches like stokes wanted to buck the trend. And I’m not using Vic Whiting as an example to further any argument I’m making.

How do we know Stokes did not do any research and knew the state of the program and decided he wanted a challenge?

Hard to have success when you have The Head of Coffman Band Boosters actively rooting against you and the politics that go along with that, the band has a lot of pull in that program. Shame on Harry!
