General NFL Chat

You can side with players. You just need to side with players with character, like Nick Chubb, rather than egomaniacs and kooks like Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers had a pretty good image back in his early days with the Packers. He sat behind Favre for 4+ years, got his shot and was one of the better QB's in the league, then it seems like 5 years ago and really during covid he just went off the rails. And I have no idea why teams sign guys who are shaky in their personal lives. Rodgers had dated a couple of starlets publically, then pushed back on the covid mandates, not that that's necessarily wrong, but he went on the offensive. And really seems like when he hooked up with Pat McAfee it somehow gave him creditability. His legacy has really diminished over the last few years.

Commanders just FLEECED the niners...

Yes getting Deebo Samuel for a 5th rounder sounds good but will Samuel want a new contract? He has 1 year left on his deal for $17.5 mil cap hit and he will get paid $17.5 mil. Samuel is 29, his best year was 2021 when he had 1400 yard receiving. Samuel next best season is only 850 yards receiving.

Samuel’s strength is his running ability and gadget play capability.

A good piece for Washington that gets them a bit closer the Eagles but at what $$$ towards the cap?

You have to wonder as it would certainly seem he's worth much more than a 5th.

It’s not just his worth on the field, it is what his contract demands are. I’d assume Washington spoke with Samuel before the trade and are aware of what Samuel is expecting in a new deal as his current deal is only thru 2025 season. If for some reason Samuel is ok with just playing out the 2025 season on his current deal of $17.5 mil then yes, this is a great deal for Washington. If Washington has to extend him for say 3 years, $75 mil with $50 mil guaranteed….. Samuel is 29 and his best season was 2021.

Another ongoing issue with Deebo is that he is very injury prone. He's also a little bit of a malcontent and may not be happy being in the slot in a Kingsbury offense.

Deebo's not all he's cracked up to being. Look at his stats, he's basically had one good season, in 2021. Otherwise he's hurt alot, and has only had 111 catches in the last 2 seasons- 30 games which is basically 4 per game. There are a TON of receivers out there. The million dollar question for teams are is your top receiver a TOP receiver, or can you replace them? There are very few absolute difference makers out there.

Jimmy Johnson is retiring from Fox sports NFL pregame. What do you think about Johnson??? I feel his career was kind of self shortened. He seemed to be such a good coach, but he retired from coaching when he was in his mid 50's. You just wonder if he got frustrated with player empowerment. His last year in Miami was a train wreck. It's funny what you don't remember. He and Dan Marino feuded the entire time he was there. Marino was at the end of his career and wanted full control of the offense as he had previous. Johnson was a hands on guy and wasn't sold on the gunslinger stuff. Marino was awful his last season and both he and Johnson stepped away after that season.

I do not believe it was player empowerment. Per former HC Brian Billick, he stated Johnson told him to be sure to go back into coaching for the right reasons. Johnson said, “I was one of them. I went back for the wrong reasons. If you go back for ego, if you go back for money, it’s the wrong reason.”

As you stated Marino was physically washed up during Johnson time in Miami. Johnson stated the Dolphins were talking to the Colts about a trade of all their picks for the Colts #1 overall pick which was Peyton Manning. A lot of ifs but that could have kept Johnson in the league for a few more years.

I think Johnson wanted more control. It's the coaches mantra. Parcells, all those guys. They want all control of operations, if it's the right guy, like Belichick, it works. If not, it can get messy. It's funny because guys who are head coaches are not "team" guys, they want all the control and decision making power.

" Around the Horn" canceled.

The game is over for ESPN's Around the Horn.

The show, in which host Tony Reali and a changing group of panelists discuss the day's biggest sports news, will host its final show May 23, the network announced Tuesday. The show has been on the air for 23 years, with Reali having hosted since February 2004, after taking over from Max Kellerman.

However, during this draft cycle, NFL analyst Kyle Brandt has noticed a trend regarding the comparisons for Skattebo. Brandt took the responsibility to go on Good Morning Football and call out the racial profiling against the Sun Devil running back.
Brandt called out the buzz words that are being thrown at Skattebo, “sneaky athletic,” “first in, first out,” and more phrases that given to typically white football players. Skattebo ranked second for running back in standing verticals with 39.5″, nothing really sneaky athletic about that number.

“Over the next 52 days, I do not want to hear the name Toby Gerhart a single time. Don’t say it! If you’re saying it about Cam Skattebo, you’re mailing in your analysis. You’re lazy. They’re not close to the same prospect. While I am at it, while I have you, do not utter the name Peyton Hillis in my presence, stop it! … Do better than just scrolling your nostalgia rolodex for the fastest meathead cracker you can find, alright? You have to do better!”

I hope he works his way up in the draft (to the second round).
