Fall Sports - Beyond Football & Soccer

Just thought I'd share some awesome success stories of our athletic Bears:

Volleyball: While Hoover reigns supreme, I believe Jackson is tied for second place w/GlenOak. Our Lady Spikers are 13-6, 8-3 right now after defeating Lake last night.

Tennis: Trisha Conlan is 19-3 so far this year and has moved on in the Canton sectionals as the #1 seeded singles player. Our doubles team of Taylor Zito & Marisa Sloan also won their opening match and has moved on in the sectional tourney. Great job to these three young ladies!!!

Girls Golf: After winning the Federal League pre-season tourney & Stark County championship, our girls continued to play well in the OHSAA tourney, as they took 2nd place in the Sectional to advance to the District, alone w/nemesis, Perry (who shot one worse than the Bears to take 3rd place).

Boys Golf: The guys also won the Federal League pre-season tourney, but finished 3rd at the SC championship. However, they also took 2nd place in the Sectionals, yesterday, to advance to the Districts along w/Lake (1st), Perry (lost 5th man tie to Jackson) and GlenOak (4th). As a note, Jackson only lost one FL match this season - that to Sectional Champ, Lake!

Cross Country: The boys took 5th place and the girls 3rd place in the 9 team boys and 7 team girls Stark County championships last week. The Federal League Championships are next Saturday at GlenOak.

Tennis: Trisha Conlan lost her opening match of both the Sectional semis and final, but won the overall sets in both to finish as the Canton D1 Sectional Champion. She will next play in the Oberlin Division 1 District Tournament later this week.

Thanks for the updates on the "other" sports. The kids participating in these sports work as hard and deserve as much support and attention as the kids in the sports that are more in the limelight. Information on web sites for each sport and also info on the Federal League All-Sports race is very much appreciated. I hope some day the League will put together a web site.

The FL has talked about it - but it never seems to get past the "talk" stage. :( I've even offered to pass along all of my data to them, as some of the schools have not-so-good record keeping prior to the internet age (roughly 10 years ago).

Girls Golf: WAY TO GO ladies!!!! The girls capture Jackson's first ever DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP yesterday at the Legends, catapulting them into the state tournament in Columbus, next week!

The Lady Bears scored a 338 with great efforts by Amanda Smith, Angela Codian, Kelsey Schutt & Kaitlyn Cherniuk. What's really awesome is that none of these girls are seniors.

Volleyball: The Lady Spikers walloped Fitch last night in three games to earn at least a share of second place. The Bears can wrap up second place, outright, with a win at Perry tomorrow night. Unfortunately, Hoover wrapped up the league title, last night, having now won all thirteen FL contests so far.

Boys Golf: The boys play in the district championships TODAY at Pine Hills. Good luck guys!!!!

BOYS GOLF: Oh so close! The boys team fell one spot short to make it to the state championships - placing 5th in the District Championships. However, there is a silver lining in that dark cloud - JHS golfer Jon Clark did qualify as an individual and will play in the state tourney that starts next Friday. Congratulations to JON CLARK!

VOLLEYBALL: Well, the Lady Spikers couldn't quite finish out Perry last night, going down to defeat in four games, 25-10, 22-25, 24-26, 24-26. Unfortunately, that allowed Boardman to tie up Jackson for second place in the Fed.

Final (UNOFFICIAL) Federal League Standings & Trophy Points
Hoover: 14-0 (9)
<tie> Boardman: 10-4 (6.5)
<tie> Jackson: 10-4 (6.5)
GlenOak: 9-5 (5)
Perry: 7-7 (4)
Lake: 3-11 (3)
McKinley: 2-12 (2)
Fitch: 1-13 (1)

More on VOLLEYBALL:

The good news is that we ended up on the other side of the District bracket from Hoover. The bad news is that the District Semis puts us against Cloverleaf, who isn't exactly a bad team. Actually, they're an EXCELLENT team. As in 20-1 and ranked #9 in the state good. As in, hopefully we don't get our butts kicked, good....lol. Anyhow, all games are held at Barberton High School.

Sectional Semis: Jackson vs. Timken on 10/19/09 at 6:30pm
Sectional Finals: vs. Perry or Massillon on 10/21/09 at 7:30pm
District Semis: vs Cloverleaf/McK/Lake winner on 10/27/09 at 6pm
District Finals: 10/29/09 at 6pm

GO BEARS!

No contest in that Timken game for our Lady Bears. They cruised to a ridiculously easy 25-6, 25-7, 25-7 win. They will next face Perry (four game winner over Massillon) tomorrow night at 7:30pm. Winner of that game most likely faces the aforementioned state ranked Cloverleaf next week in the District Semis.

Lots of updates today!!!

VOLLEYBALL: The ladies sought - and got - revenge on Perry for that loss last weekend that cost us a full share of 2nd place in the Federal League. The Bears sent the Panthers packing, last night, up at the Barberton Sectionals, in four games to win the Sectional title. Up next for Jackson is #9 ranked Cloverleaf, next Tuesday at 6pm in Barberton. Good job in the sectionals, ladies, and good luck next week!

GIRLS TENNIS: Our very own Trisha Conlan, junior, is returning to the state tournament tomorrow morning, after playing in the tourney as a sophomore last year. However, the road to a state title gets off to a brutal start, as she received a #4 seed, meaning she has to face state power, Megan McNamara of Notre Dame (Toledo) right off the bat. Good luck, Trisha, in your pursuit of that state title!

GIRLS GOLF: Our fabulous fivesome - juniors Amanda Smith & Shelbi Howington, sophomores Angela Codian & Kaitlyn Chemiuk, and frosh Kelsey Schutt - make a return trip to the Columbus this week, after finishing #10 in the state last year. The girls get underway at 9am tomorrow morning in pursuit of that state title. Great job, so far, ladies, and keep it up down at OSU!!!

BOYS GOLF: Our senior, Jon Clark, begins his quest for a state championship, on the individuals side, at 9:40am tomorrow morning. While Lake may have won the district as a team, Mr. Clark certainly made a name for himself in the area, as he has played on Jackson's state qualifying team the last two years, and will hopefully bring home the gold this weekend!

In Girls Tennis Trisha Conlan won her first match against the #1 seed, Megan McNamera, but unfortunately fell in her next match 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). Great Job Trisha

GIRLS TENNIS: As pk7 stated, Trisha won her first match against the #1 seed, but was unable to put her second match opponent away in the very tight third game against the young lady who would end up being #4 in the state (Alex Power, Olentangy Liberty). Still, that put her in the top eight in the state and with it, she earned All-Ohio honors. Very good job, Trish and good luck next year in your senior season!!!

GIRLS GOLF: The girls played a good round on Saturday, following Friday's rainout, but alas, it was 29 points too little, as Mason took home the state title. Our ladies wound up in a sixth place tie with Upper Arlington, but finished #6 due to the 5th card tiebreaker. A very good job by our girls as they proved they were one of the very best in the state! The good news? Not one of them is a senior!!!!!!

BOYS GOLF: Oh how close! Just a mere three shots separated Jon Clark from the state championship! Just three shots! Wow - talk about having an excellent ending to a great season. Jon shot a 77 on the rain-shortened weekend - great job, Jon, on a fabulous career at JHS!

VOLLEYBALL: If you get the chance & have some free time tonight - please head up to Barberton HS to cheer on our team as they take the court against the #9 ranked Cloverleaf Colts. Hopefully if we have more fans in attendance, it'll pump up our girls for a huge upset! And if you go - cheer extra hard for me, as I'm not able to make the trip due to another committment. :dang:

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: The boys' season came to an end this past weekend at the Districts. Jackson placed 7th out of 16 teams, which was a few spots beyond what they needed to advance (top five advance to regionals). However, it would appear that we do have one runner, Josh Benner (senior) that is advancing to the Boardman regionals, as he placed 18th and the top twenty advance. Good luck to Mr. Benner!

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: On the other hand, the girls team did advance, placing fifth in the districts (top six advance on the girls side). The ladies will head to the regional tournament this weekend in Boardman.

VOLLEYBALL: WAY TO GO LADIES!!!!

The Bears upset the Colts in four games (25-20, 25-18, 24-26, 25-22) to advance to the district final against the #2 seeded Wadsworth Grizzlies on Thursday night at 6pm!

VOLLEYBALL: As DS stated, our Lady Bears lost in four games to #2 seed Wadsworth. Unfortunately during warm-ups, one of our key players, senior Britney Terrell, was hit in the eye, causing substantial impaired vision in that eye. Without her and/or her at 100%, the Lady Bears were unable to stop the fierce attack of Wadsworth and lost the first two games. However, she recovered in time for the third game, which Jackson won handily, but it was too little, too late, as Wadsworth took game four, 25-21, and sent the Lady Bears out of the playoffs. Hudson moves on to the regional semifinals to play against last night's winner of the Mayfield/Riverside match.

Congrats to the ladies on a good run this year, especially in beating one of the best teams in the state and giving another great team, Wadsworth, all it could handle.

Way to Go Lady Bears. It was a great ride this season. Thanks to the 9 seniors for all they have done for the Bears volleyball program during their 4 years.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: The ladies did a very admirable job at the Boardman regionals yesterday, but with the Hoover Vikings dominating, our best fell a little bit short. The gals took 7th place, but only the top four advance to state. Final score for our Lady Bears was 208 - 47 points outside of qualifying. Good job on the season, girls!

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: Mr. Benner had a decent run at 18:52.42, but it put him in 47th place, well outside the top sixteen that would advance. Congrats on making it to regionals, Josh, and a good career at Jackson!

And that will do it for me on this thread, as all of the seasons have now fully concluded. Continue to tune into the soccer thread, as both the boys & girls teams continue on in the playoffs!
