Elder Basketball 2024/25

Any word on basketball rosters? I think tryouts are complete. I would think Varsity "senior" players that are returning.
WIlliams, Guidugli, Meade, Palicki, Paff
Juniors- Dugan, Moore, Richardson, Chumbley, Kafel? not sure after that
Sophs- Estep?

Have freshman made final cuts?

I would think Stokes and Galbreath move up. They need their size in the front court.

Williams is one of the best players in the GCL/City but after him, not sure who else can score. Is Estep playing for certain?

I heard he was but I do not think any of the football players have been at practice yet from what I am told.

Understandable. I see the schedule posted but I’m guessing the first 3 games are exhibitions/scrimmages? Is the first real game at Northridge?

Even though it can be detrimental to their own teams success, these Elder coaches go out of their way to support one another and the players’ opportunity to play multiple sports.

These head coaches have great perspective and recognize what high school sports are all about. There is a reason Elder has some of, if not THE most tenured, head coaches in the country.

This might be true to some extent, but you hardly see 3 sport athletes these days at Elder. There’s a reason for that

That’s not unique to Elder. The time demand for each sport is so much greater than it was 20-30 years ago.

Plus, college coaches prefer kids who stick to one sport. They say they like multi sport recruits, but that’s all bs.

No, it’s not unique to Elder, but can still be common enough at some schools. And I agree with the multi-sport thing; even high school coaches preach about how great it is, but I’m not buying it

At the same time, if a kid chooses to drop other sports to focus on one sport, that’s fine too. As long as it’s HIS choice and not something he’s strong armed into doing.

Totally agree, but I have heard of plenty of situations of HS coaches heavily suggesting kids only focus on their sport. Which is what I was originally getting at. It’s all coach-speak; coaches 110% want kids prioritizing their respective sport above all else

Agree in most cases, which is why I suggested Elder's coaches are unique in their approach and attitude.

Heck, Peyton Ramsey played basketball at Elder. And he is just one of many examples of athletes in football and/or basketball choosing to participate in a different varsity sport at Elder.

Is Estep playing basketball this year?

Here is a good example. Fortkamp made the freshman basketball team. If he was at another school, the football coaches might have made him concentrate on football focusing on lifting and getting bigger in the winter.

I believe the teams are set. No surprises from what I am told. Now it is just a matter of working the football kids into the mix. I think you will see a mix of a few Sophs up each game to add depth. The primary players outside of Estep will be Jr's and SR's.
Williams, Guidugli, Paff, J Walpole, Meade, Palicki.
Moore, Dugan, Chumbley, Richardson, Sullivan
Estep, Galbraith, and a couple others rotating up/down.

Elder scrimmaged Sycamore last week. Not sure if the Elder football guys were missing or not, but I was told it was competitive (lots of half court and situations, so can't really take much away from the score). Outside of Williams, I think it's Estep that needs to step up and be big time. The other players will play tough and disciplined, but Estep is the one with the most upside.

Rosters posted. Varsity lists 18 including 6 Sophs and 1 Freshman (Kirch)

It’s the same with graduating early, at least for football recruits. It seems that’s being pushed as the norm, especially with the real (not early) Signing Day being pushed up into early December.

I think they can list 15 each night. I would think they will just rotate the Soph based on matchups, JV minutes and other factors. Pretty much what we thought on JR and Sr's.
Kirch on varsity just shows how we have no height in the program. He belongs on freshman. Also shocked they didn’t move any of the freshman guards up to JV.

The coaches know what they are doing. They are simply looking long-term to develop players who can contribute on varsity.

The games haven't even started yet so things will change ongoing.

My guess is he moved up for depth, in case the front court runs into foul trouble. He’s probably not expected to be an immediate contributor.

Evidently Cam Williams is injured and out a few weeks. ENN posted a photo with his foot in a soft cast. So let’s hope for a speedy recovery.

First actual game tomorrow at Dayton Northridge. Without Williams, it’s going to be really tough for Elder.
