In the midst of one of the greatest athletics periods in West Branch history it's pretty disappointing the wrestling has been so bad as of late
Embarrassed to have any association with West Branch and these coaches. I’m sure the coaches or the wives will get on here and come after me. But my god, forfeit 3 weights, one which was going to be Salem 138 Senior… pathetic. Then you can only get one clumsy win at 126 and the coaches kid has the audacity to try and flaunt his singlet. We lost by 70. You just made us look worse. And then I read the news article this morning and see that our Coach says not much he can do wrestling 7 or 8 freshman against a team of juniors and seniors. So I did some searching, we wrestled 5 Freshman at 106,113,120,144,190. Salem ALSO had 5 Freshman at 106,113,120,126,175. Very clumsy excuse. West Branch has been on a steady decline for years and years now and the younger Marra boy is the only thing that will keep this sorry program feeling content. I am almost relieved I didn’t wear a West Branch shirt to the match. I mean for crying out loud we put forth such a weak performance that there is a police report in the news that we had West Branch parents fighting children in the stands and the police called. Our guys are better off just going to United at this point. And yes, my name has some doubts/sarcasm to it right now. At least our football team knows how to win.

So exactly what happened to that once really strong and proud program? Did the talent dry up or put all their emphasis into football, or coaching or what?

Football definitely has its impact but typically when public schools are good at football their wrestling teams are at least respectable due to multiple sport athletes. More to it than that. A lot is going on behind the scenes.

First off I am going to ask that you keep my amazing of a child’s name or even mention out of your mouth and posts! My kid is what a true warrior stands for and if you think he embarrassed us more see my attachment of his post on his reason for doing that. Was it because he pinned their JV kid in 18 seconds because the original 126 wasn’t able to wrestle NO!
I won’t even address the news paper comment.
The only other comment I am going to address here is this: obviously you are a community member whether you have kids, grandkids, or had kids in our district it’s obvious. So I’m sure that there are some connections to a lot of other upcoming wrestlers. Other than the other wrestlers name that you have splattered now on a public blog who has not been asked to be pulled into any of this witch-hunt, I really encourage you to actually verbally tell some of the middle school parents, but also the youth parents how you feel there’s no talent at those levels. Other than the one kid you pointed out who by all means is extremely talented. Because I’m sure that they will be quick to learn, the true colors of people they thought believed in their kids as well. I will sit back and wait for you and others to attack this post 🙄

The youth and junior high isn’t the issue. They do well. Young Marra is a beast. Our JR high just won EOWL for our division. They get up to high school, and rather quit wrestling due to coaching, or move to football to be a part of a modern winning culture. Two years ago I watched us win EOWL, and beat Salem Jr High with a ton of good eighth graders. Now we have nothing to show from that group? Exhibit A….. I can respect what the coaches son has done in his career despite some adversity, but flaunting your singlet down such a large score is not leading by example. WWE coach and head coach that is struggling to develop wrestlers. As one of my long time friends/coach at Rootstown used to say, culture never graduates. You won’t hear a good program like that blaming their weakness on youth and underclassmen. Sure it makes things tougher, but it’s a lousy excuse in the sport of wrestling. West Branch do better!

Can you explain that opinion when our junior and senior class males show the most participation in football than any other sport. Basketball last night had 2 seniors, wrestling has 2. If you look at the younger classes coming up that is where we saw the greatest transition to more one sport driven athletes. My son who is obviously a senior has always participated in multiple sports. Those times are changing and some of the current high school kids are starting to realize if they want to take their experience to the next level, it’s almost physically impossible to focus in on more than one sport so yeah here at West branch they do have a strong focus on football and why because we’ve been really good at it and that’s OK. Alliance who out of the EBC has the largest enrollment and has a halfway decent football team correct me if I’m wrong right so how come they’re wrestling is the way that it is especially after you had a coach for the past X amount of years that now goes to Canfield and has more success. So the current coach has to rebuild. Is that why we aren’t focusing on others lack of success? Want to know why we aren’t, i’m sure you don’t and really don’t care my opinion, but I’m gonna give it to you anyways. The reason is because there’s a certain couple of disgruntled people that are stirring the stuff up all over social media within the communities on here and as society we just grasp on and ride that train. How about it’s could be an environmental thing and not always just the coaches. You can only work with what you got and available. Kids came back out for the team that hadn’t wrestled in two years. So you mean to tell me everybody’s just running the opposite direction from our wrestling team I don’t think so. The continual bashing of West branch the team, the wrestlers, the coaches it’s honestly getting a little mundane. Why don’t we focus on this successes of the other teams in the EBC and give them credit that they’re wrestlers put the time effort of going above and beyond what’s asked of them Because I can tell you that’s not the case for everyone. As for your comment about lack of talent, coming up other than the remaining brother of two previous successful wrestlers. I encourage you as an obvious West branch, community, member, or even possible parent to take those comments to some of the current wrestling parents of high school, middle school and youth to let them know how you feel there’s no other talent because I’m sure that you’re associated with some of the other parents of some of the other wrestlers who are actually extremely talented and I would bet they’d be surprised to hear this actually come from your mouth to their face. I will be over here just waiting for the notification of comments of more bashing.

F first of all how many of those freshman and freshman went all three periods, sir or ma’am do you know did you bring that up. Also 126 Yeah was a freshman and my son Pam in 18 seconds, so to not embarrass him and the reason why he didn’t wrestle the kid. He already wrestled at

You know it is what it is and maybe you should see the support for what my kid did. Unless you are apart of our current program or know my family personally I’m not sure how you’d know of the adversities my son has gone through so please feel free to come say all your concerns to my face at an event. With that being said keep my kid out of your posts!

Again, a lot of this drama seems to be stemming from that particular year of kids, ironic not so much!

I think you need to look no further than what Salem has done in the last 5 years to understand what can be done to build the program at West Branch. Salem went from having 3-6 kids in the junior high and 7-10 on the high school to all of a sudden junior high teams of 18-25 kids and they kept those kids in the program all the way through their high school career and just a few years later having enough for a full varsity and JV lineup. I know their junior high and high school head coach worked very hard to find wrestlers, basketball kids who didn't see playing time, football kids who didn't play a winter sport, and the kids in the hall who did nothing at all. They built a culture brick by brick and now it's paying dividends for them. The older of us remember when it was the same at Carrollton where we'd have some really fantastic individual wrestlers but never really the team success that you want until our coaches made it a point to recruit their student body and get kids out on the mat. There's something off at West Branch and the Salem dual was something that you could see coming for a couple years but it should be a wake up call over there, something has to change

I’m not reading all of that lol. I said what I said. Elephant in the room, WB wrestling needs new coaching. This is making you+husband look even worse than needed be.
Good luck to all EBC teams in post season.
For not hiding behind a name, doing what the rest of you do on here…extend my right to speak?! Because what you or anyone else thinks of me, is what defines me. Laughable. I pray for all of you truly!

Couldn’t agree more. Salem has had an entire culture change in recent years. They had probably 30+ guys the other night and only two coaches. And everywhere I look on social or in the news I only see the young coach and the head coach. Their guys have bought into their culture though. You could hardly hear in the gym it was so loud and yet still Salem’s young coach was calling out our moves before we hit them and every time he called a move out to his guys they hit it. I know we have good alumni at WB that have wrestled within the last 10 years. We went 10+ years beating Salem, that’s now 3 years in a row I believe losing to them. Can’t hurt to do some searching.

They really have capitalized on what they've had. I think it was in 2021 both the Salem and West Branch middle school team's beat Carrollton for the first time in recent memory. Since then it's been a tale of two cities, one has kept and developed their talent and the other has seen it walk out the door

Sectional draws will be concluded today as well. Carrollton, Minerva, Salem and Marlington should all be top 3 at their sectional.

I could not agree more, the school is loaded with athletes, look at all the other programs within the school. All are line for league titles. But if you look at the coach's wife's post. It's the kids and the community not the coaching. Lol, yea no doubt no kids are not coming out but why/ maybe because of the coaching??? Probably, I know people that have pulled kids off of team because of it. You have a questionable coach that kids are afraid to shower in front of the one and a wannabe pro wrestler in his 40s leading them. No Wonder, no one is lining up to be on the team. We could have had one of the best wrestlers in school history coaching them; but we let him go to another school in the EBC for this guy?? Why? I also seen a post on their fb that Salem kids were throwing hammers at the WB parents, come on, that is a felony, really doubt that happened. Salem did what they did to put an end to this humiliation.
WB needs their AD to step up and make a change, the kids and parents want it. They could be a force to be recon with if they make a change soon, they have great kids coming up from youth and MS, if they don't make a change, we will be having this conversation in years to come.
All people need to do is research the two main coaches, one the HC was a JV wrestler from SE, the other was a Salem guy that left because he could not make the line up so transferred out.
Not that this is important, but they clearly are not leaders and are trying to live their youth through others and that is oblivious.

Alliance, Marlington, Salem and West Branch(obv) are all at West Branch sectional. Carrollton and Minerva both at Claymont.

As a mother and member of the West Branch community, I am choosing to comment because this really hits home for me. Respectfully, I am a mother of a former wrestler who had a pretty solid career and one to follow. Unfortunately, my younger boy hung up his shoes way too soon. Lord knows I love wrestling and I so respect the sport. And from what I see, the same concern that myself and many families from our own community have had about the future of our program, has now reached surrounding communities. Thats not a bad thing.. It shows you care. And I think it’s valid and I respect it! I know the topic is sensitive as it does involve people but at this point we have got to be about business. If the love for the program is there, if the passion for our future is there, it is time to put pride and personal feelings aside, and focus on what it is going to take.

We have some phenomenal athletes! And yes, it starts in the youth. Ive lived it and I have seen it! But something has changed- tremendously with the culture and mindset. And where they should be at their prime, some have regressed, some have remained stagnant, and many have not returned. Wrestling is not for everyone, but I know most of these young men had hearts of warriors! Each has their own reason for not returning, but the culture and mindset of our current highschool program is definitely a factor. To watch this has been so sad, for me and others. But I did do my due diligence as a mother to speak for mine. And to be honest, I spoke for others, and I spoke for our future. Because I believe in everyone of those boys! Actually, I did this more than once. Respectfully of course, but honestly.

Their grind and their dedication deserved that.

I also suggested bringing the wrestling families together, to address concerns, and talk about what we can all do to make this better. Unfortunately, I was shut down. Trust me, the concern is not new but it has definitely been ignored. And to be even more honest, what my family has invested and brought to West Branch Wrestling, the thought should have been more respected.

Thank you for speaking up. I am pretty sure we know each other very well, as maybe your solid wrestler may even work for me, and i feel bad the other gave it up do to coaching. As he deserves better, if this is the case, I know you and your family did speak up with no results. I would even say your solid one should be on the staff, if not running it. Trust me you are not alone, and many are standing behind you and going to start speaking their minds and pulling their weight in the community to make changes happen. The kids, school and program deserve and need this. A coach should not be leading warmups and standing in the middle of the mat to do so, it makes us a laughingstock. It is an ego thing from him as he never got a chance to do so, which all of us did so he wants us all to know how great he is, it's obvious.
