Dover football 2025

All of the assistant coaches were asked to resign. From 7 th and up so the new coach could hire who he wanted
now that is interesting for sure. Usually though some coaches are retained, or is this going to be a total new staff top to bottom.

Not disagreeing with you, but I’ve seen this (Dover hiring Dover people) mentioned a handful of times- what exactly is this referring to? There have only been two football head coaching hires in the last 30 years, and the other was Ifft from Massillon Perry. Is everyone referring to assistant coach hires? Other sport head coaches? I really don’t think this is a systemic issue or anything.
Probably referring to the Marks/Souers years. Marks was probably the worst coach Dover ever had, at least record wise. Souers did have a few good first couple seasons then really dropped off and that's when Ifft came in then.

This is common practice. Any time a coach resigns this happens until the new coach is hired and then they build the staff. I’m sure many/most of the assistants and middle school coaches will return.

When they started the hiring process, they mentioned that that was standard procedure. I think most knew if an assistant from last year won the job, most of the other assistants would be brought back. If an outside person was hired, they probably would have brought some people over from their last job.

Ya I just took a quick look: Marks coached for four years- all losing seasons (definitely bad). Souers seemed ok with 3 winning seasons and 3 losing seasons. Also had Reichenbach in between them for two years, but not sure if he was local or not.

I would like to see evidence of the admin asking them to be assistants.

also, why was Gardner not renewed at West Holmes, I believe he still teaches there.

Look, either way, I think that this leaves the door open for a few people here who seem to know what should be done to try and get on staff and make sure that its successful. Unless people are petty and would rather route for people to fail just to say they were right. What a sad existence that must be. (this is a general statement, not directed at Pipe Dream)

I'll be honest, if any administrator called a candidate and told them they weren't getting the job because they couldn't control them, then they are dumbest human beings in an administrative role ever. It doesn't seem plausible.
I heard straight from the source they asked the college guy to come teach and be an assistant

Reichenbach was not local and I think he only coached 1 season. That team had an offense like no other. 3 1000 yard rushers with one around the 2000 mark. Paris Washington. His nickname was manchild. Also played linebacker. Opponents despised going up against Washington. Too bad that team got screwed by the refs in the playoffs against Sheridan. That was the 87' team.

Interesting- I remember seeing Paris Washington’s picture in the hall of fame by the gym, but never knew his story.

Also looks like Reichenbach coached two years, 1 good/1 bad:

For what it’s worth, here are some coaching numbers from the previous Dover coaches (pre-coach Ifft, who I’m assuming now leads all these categories):

In addition to the Super./AD issue…

Also, now the varsity fb coach and head cheerleading advisor married…no?

Bball coach retires and son takes over.

I’m an implant to the community…so still a bit of an outsiders’ view. Feels like after 30 years and a program kind of peaking; an outside hire was the way to go. Don’t know anything about him outside of his performance as a DC. All I’ll say is talking to one parent of a kid on the team during the process…all I was told was “we just hope it isn’t Rees.”

Maybe he makes some solid assistant hires.

Hope it works out.
Don’t forget the Superintendents brother is a teacher and football coach. The retired BB coach wife had a made up job. We have an AD Ast AD and secretary’s for them as well. Lots of waste in that AD office and school. Anyone that Votes to give this school money is crazy.

A very desirable head coaching position is obviously going to be a hotly contested process. Did they make the right hire? We all have our own opinions and time/results will tell, but all of Dover needs to unite behind whoever got it (3 quality candidates for sure!). Truth is numbers and enthusiasm for the program are low and whoever got the job needs to have the support to be able to fix those problems or we will become New Phila in the 90s/early 2000s. Best of luck Coach Rees! Everyone else, chill the message board hate!

You 100% right about numbers and enthusiasm becoming a problem…even though they’ve still got some talent lined up.

Problem is…at least as I look for it in the immediate reactions to the social media announcements…I don’t see a lot of players, or what I’d assume to be parents of prominent players out there lauding the hire. Maybe it’s there more than I can see…but that’s the type of evidence I’m looking for to tell me whether this a popular hire for the kids in the program. Not whether members of the community who cheered for him when he was a player, or went to school with him like the hire.

If I’m handing the keys to what should be a really successful program to a new coach after 30 years, I’d like that new coach to have at least seen some perspective of coaching football outside of that program. Hard to take any thing to another level when all you’ve known is that one thing.

So, what's Dover's schedule this year? Is it complete yet or do we still have an open date? Can someone post it? I think there's a good core coming back for the upcoming season. It's going to be interesting to see the changes that take place.

That may happen, but no one knows yet, you haven't even had a season yet, let alone 2 or 3 to judge.

look, I am only saying these things because there is a lot that we the public may not know. What if he wasn't the first choice but two other or their top candidate turned them down after they were offered. That can happen often.

Its possible that he could have been the best fit for what positions were available based on their top candidates (in terms of teaching positions)

maybe some of the candidates people really wanted never applied?

those are all things to consider before already declaring that Dover football is going to go down the tubes, maybe try to support your program instead of sabotage of it because your angry. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. if it works out, then thats great and everyone is happy

Gardner is someone you mentioned as a finalist or someone in your camp did. In those same years he was HC there, they averaged giving up 21.58 points per game. Not much difference from 23. Now, I believe he was the OC while being the HC and I know they could score it. When looking at some of the Dover scores in the same time frame, there were plenty of games where Dover couldn't score 21+ which usually gives you a good chance to win the game. If I knew of other candidates who were in the finals I would run their stats as well just to compare. Honestly, I would like to know the average of points given up per game by high school football programs across the state.

The question comes down to this, will the kids come out and play and buy in? Can they be physical and disciplined? I think the switch to the OCC is great, because I think it sets the table to some tough games but others that are winnable yearly.

Anyway, all I am saying is give the guy a chance to not sow division amongst the kids... if that happens, you could have Vince Lombardi as your HC and it won't make a difference. Communities who continually support their coaches in public and at home tend to have continued success. It would be a shame for Dover not to continue to put out quality football teams because people are upset their preferred candidate didn't get the job or that they are taking out frustrations with the admin on the coach that was hired by them.

I hate cancel culture and if people are already, and it appears on here they are, canceling the program because of the hire, then the program doesn't stand a chance to be successful.

However, I understand the frustration with perceived nepotism and the fact that the Super and AD are married (I can see that possibly being problematic). I have always admired the Dover program with its consistentcy to field competitive teams. Not many places can do that. I would hate to see it decline because of infighting over a coaching hire.
the last 3 years dover was 18 - 14 and if it wasnt for the 16 team playoffs they wouldnt have been in the playoffs. 2021 they were 13 - 1 and the defense only gave up 12 points a game and was #2 in the region. been down hill ever since.

I believe IV still has an opening in week 2, I sure would like to another year of that match up. Wonder if it’s a possibility?
I believe Dover has tried multiple times and IV isn’t interested. I’m surprised because IV returns a ton of talent from their title team and likely would be a pretty decent favorite against Dover or any local team

That’s not true, I am 100% certain of that. It’s my understanding that Dover was waiting until the coaching change to all the new coach to decide whether or not to commit to a game. IV has no reason to not want to play Dover, Hopefully they figure it out and get it on the schedule, it’s a huge gate and an exciting game for the community.

I’m 100% certain of my statement, so I guess we agree to disagree
