Gardner is someone you mentioned as a finalist or someone in your camp did. In those same years he was HC there, they averaged giving up 21.58 points per game. Not much difference from 23. Now, I believe he was the OC while being the HC and I know they could score it. When looking at some of the Dover scores in the same time frame, there were plenty of games where Dover couldn't score 21+ which usually gives you a good chance to win the game. If I knew of other candidates who were in the finals I would run their stats as well just to compare. Honestly, I would like to know the average of points given up per game by high school football programs across the state.
The question comes down to this, will the kids come out and play and buy in? Can they be physical and disciplined? I think the switch to the OCC is great, because I think it sets the table to some tough games but others that are winnable yearly.
Anyway, all I am saying is give the guy a chance to not sow division amongst the kids... if that happens, you could have Vince Lombardi as your HC and it won't make a difference. Communities who continually support their coaches in public and at home tend to have continued success. It would be a shame for Dover not to continue to put out quality football teams because people are upset their preferred candidate didn't get the job or that they are taking out frustrations with the admin on the coach that was hired by them.
I hate cancel culture and if people are already, and it appears on here they are, canceling the program because of the hire, then the program doesn't stand a chance to be successful.
However, I understand the frustration with perceived nepotism and the fact that the Super and AD are married (I can see that possibly being problematic). I have always admired the Dover program with its consistentcy to field competitive teams. Not many places can do that. I would hate to see it decline because of infighting over a coaching hire.
