D2 State Semi-Final: Gilmour Academy vs Waverly

Congrats to both teams!
Expecting a close game.
Don't know much about Waverly but I'm sure they are very tough team.
Hopefully someone will get some info on here about them.

Quick scouting report on Gilmour is ....

They have only made the final 4 once in school history....1992 were runner up.
Nice, hard working kids who have improved a lot since 9th grade.
Very well coached.
Play a very tough schedule against very athletic teams....benefit tremendously from this.
Two big guys grew several inches and their height has really made a difference this season.
They attack the basket very well.
Fun to watch and can adjust to other teams styles.

Hope all have fun in Dayton.

I can try my best to give some insight on the tigers
First trip to the final 4 in 52 years, 4/5 starters are seniors they’ve all played together their entire careers so chemistry is off the charts they all mesh well together and play as a unit. A name to watch for in this match up is Trey Robertson, the young man may not be the tallest but he is still very gifted as a scorer, he is the school and counties all time leading scorer he eclipsed 2,000 points in his career. Also the tigers have struggled mightily in their last 2 games shooting thus the low scores I don’t expect them to shoot terribly a third straight game. Another player to watch out for is Mark Stulley, he may be undersized but he will be a pest to the ball handler all game long and does a good job of bringing it up the court him self

Awesome stuff!

Waverly is in a little unfamiliar territory as well, like stated above, has been 52 years since the Tigers last reached a Final 4.

Tigers are a senior heavy team. These guys have been playing together since they were able at a young age. Travis Robertson is the head coach. Has held the position for 15 seasons now I believe. He has two sons who are on the team and were ball boys the entire time Travis has been coaching, along with another guard Stulley. So the Waverly community has watched these boys grow up in front of their eyes and have a strong connection to this team.
As far as basketball goes, they are probably one of the toughest teams anyone will face, they will battle anyone. They have played a very tough non league schedule this year, facing Newark, Upper Arlington, Hurricane (WV) and Colonel Crawford.
Starters are Trey Robertson(12), Mark Stulley(12), Wade Futhey(12), Hudson Kelly(11) and Will Futhey(12). With Penn Morrison(12) and Braylon Robertson(9) off the bench.
Only go 7 deep.
Robertson will do most of your scoring and distributing, he is the engine that makes this team go. Extremely high basketball IQ, can score at any level and very unselfish and can score it any way you want. Stulley handles the PG duties and is the ultimate pest on defense. Will Futhey is the big man, very strong and athletic. Can finish as the rim and is a monster on the glass. Wade Futheys main role is to make outside shots, he is streaky. Kelly is a forward who can defend and has a nice touch around the rim. Penn comes off the bench and provides length, defend, rebounds and can get you a bucket or two. Braylon comes off the bench as well as a freshman and the other son of head coach. He can hit outside shots and has been defending very well, he isn’t the biggest as far as height but he is stout and will not back down from anyone.
They like to play fast and get up and down the floor. The past couple of games they have been forced into more of a half court game. They have seen a lot of different zones throughout the year and have really improved against it.
Overall, Waverly is a very fun team to watch. Their hard working and and just love being around each other. The community is very excited to get to Dayton Friday. Should be a great game.

An honest-to-God intelligent and informative post on Yappi!?! Well done, young man!!! As a new member, you will quickly learn that posts like this are about as rare as a unicorn or Bigfoot!

Waverly started off in a 13-3 hole and has pretty much played Gilmour even since a very slow start. They are much better than I expected.

Waverly was a well coached strong team. They had some nice sets. Gilmour was longer and quicker. Their guards often beat Waverly’s guards off the dribble then kicked it out to wide open threes. Waverly‘s trapping defense could turn the ball over enough.

Yes they did call a lot of fouls. And the refs also let a lot go. Or they would still be playing. Waverly is an aggressive team and they are going to leave it all out there.

Can’t be mad at our boys, our fans made the trip in bunches! Hats off to GA they beat us, they were electric from 3 all night long and when it seemed we’d get a run going they put a stop to it. Nothing to hang our heads over proud of everyone on our team from top to bottom. Now begins the fun part of replacing 4 starters and a 2k points scorer

Loved watching Waverly last night.
Well coached and skilled.
Big brother Sr. is a hell of a player.
Loved his burly little brother freshman.
In the end Gilmour made more shots.

You have to recognize GA Coach for the
Box & 1 and a few other moves that I thought helped them.
Also GA has shot the ball very well from 3 in the playoffs and used that last night to their advantage.
Several different guys.

Well said GA was just so good from 3 and we just didn’t find our stride offensively. The length and quickness of the defense of GA also was able disrupt we had played against teams with length but not nearly as athletic or quick.
