D2 2025 Early Outlook

Yes, it’s early and the dust hasn’t yet had a chance to settle on Avon’s 2024 championship trophy, but the D2 2024 season is over so it’s time to turn the attention to 2025 in what has arguably become Ohio’s marquee division in football. And since D2 has some places where football season never really ends, let’s dive in early.

I’m not ready to pick a 2025 winner, but I’ll take a stab at all four regions (with the assumption of no major changes from 2024).

R7 — Massillon. Even though they didn’t win the region in 2024, this is my most confident pick for 2025.

R6 — Avon. They lose some key players, but they return a solid nucleus and should hold off strong challenges from Highland, Wadsworth, Anthony Wayne and Olmsted Falls.

R5 — Hoban. Walsh Jesuit has closed the gap, but the region still runs through the Knights.

R6 — Anderson. This is my least confident pick. They do return some good talent and their unorthodox style is going to take them far, but LaSalle seems to be back in the picture.

The big question for D2 is will there be any additions, such as Toledo CC? Another thing could be an unusual shuffling of the regions, such as the year when both Hoban and Massillon were in R5.

At any rate, D2 has already turned the page to 2025.

Is there a team in R6 that brings a starting QB back but Wadsworth? Avon will have Elder who has game experience (pretty big game experience too) but I don't think any of the D2 SWC schools bring back a starting QB anywhere and AW and Highland lose their senior QBs for next year.

Yes. Wadsworth is the only one of them returning the QB.

Don't mention nordonia are you kidding me?

That’s what the thread is for, Brian. We want to know about the teams for 2025. You’re going to tell us about Nordonia. Can they beat Hoban?
I don't know have one of the best jv teams ever.Steven faulk is a great qb and has played on all 3 levels. Only returns 5 starters.but a great qb can carry a team. Can avon repeat?.

Avon has a chance to repeat, but the odds are not in their favor. It’s hard to repeat.

Avon loses a ton, too. They've obviously got talent coming back, but there's a lot to replace. Obviously QB, but also much of both O and D lines.

It's true Avon has a lot to replace, including along the OL but I'm confident OL will be one of the team's strengths next year. They have some size coming up.

Wadsworth seems like an alternative choice to Avon in R6. Plenty returning with an experienced QB.

Avon will be in the mix. Strengthens will be LB, DB and RB. A QB that has some experience. Elder has it to where they will reload. The 2023 team was suppose to be a down year as a lot of juniors and they went 14-1.....

I don’t know what Winton Woods situation is, but if they go from D1 to D2 they can be interesting in D2 R8. As for that region I also think Harrison could be another team to look out for, they are getting better, but they have yet to get over the hump by beating La Salle.

I’m less familar with NEO but I’m curious to see how the likes of Highland, Wadsworth look. From the SWC Avon should be great, but also North Ridgeville looked great. Are they bringing a lot back?

Hudson was young this year and could take a big step forward in 2025. Harding had a nice season with a first year coach. For the Federal League D2 teams Perry might return the most.

Ridgeville I would suspect has the most to replace in SWC. That being said Coach Morgan has done a nice job growing the total football program in Ridgeville so you never know and would suspect that still are one of the main challengers in SWC. Their senior class this year though was very good.

That’s six different champs in the last six years.

2019 - LaSalle
2020 - Hoban
2021 - Winton Woods
2022 - Toledo CC
2023 - Massillon
2024 - Avon

Will the trend hold? The likeliest to do it next year would be, IMO, Walsh Jesuit, Highland, DeSales, Anderson.
I am biased of course so I'll say Hoban wins it all next season.

I wonder if Winton Woods bumps back down next season? That would spice R8 up in a major way. Would it be crazy if I said I think the usual suspects win R5-7 in 2025?

Wadsworth's loaded class of 26' will all be seniors, (and all healthy by next szn)with talented starting QB returning.
