Cleveland Browns 2025 Edition

ESPN analyst of the trade … not sure I understand their logic
A) Pickett is definitely better DTR
B) it was only a 5th round pick … and the Browns have multiple late round picks
C) Pickett is at least a serviceable backup and is still relatively young
D) Getting rid of DTR … additional by subtraction IMO

Eagles get: QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, 2025 fifth-round pick
Browns get: QB Kenny Pickett

Eagles trade: A
Browns trade: D

A year ago, the Eagles traded for Pickett by giving a package that, by our draft pick calculations, was roughly equivalent to a borderline fifth- or sixth-round pick. Forty-three pass attempts later and now the Browns have given up a fifth-round selection plus Thompson-Robinson for a more expensive year of Pickett (he'll cost them $2.6 million in cash this year as opposed to a little under for $2 million for the Eagles last year). I don't see the logic.

The Browns need a quarterback, don't get me wrong. I just don't believe that the team -- which is highly leveraged against the cap and needs all the draft capital it can muster -- ought to be burning picks on someone like Pickett. The former first-rounder -- who ranked 20th in QBR his rookie season but dropped to 27th in 2023 before being discarded by the Steelers -- has plenty of equivalents who could surely be acquired without giving up a fifth-round pick (and Thompson-Robinson).

Cleveland's focus at quarterback surely is on the draft, and rightfully so. But the Browns probably could have done just as well, and maybe better (Kirk Cousins?!) without having to make this deal.
Agreed that is not a good take.

The pick is the Lions i.e. late 5th round...how many contributors honestly come out of there. And moving on from DTR is certainly not a sin. The move also doesn't preclude them from also adding Cousins or anyone else. And complaining about taking on a relatively peanuts contract is silly.

A good 5th rounder is a decent special teamer and losing DTR is addition by subtraction as they'll never be tempted to put him in ever again.

I wonder if they see Pickett as the bridge starter or the veteran backup.

DTR was yet another qb whose strengths in college did not fit the Browns system, yet was taken and forced into it. What about his UCLA career screams " perfect fit with Stefanski"?

I was hoping for a more exciting free agent season for the Browns but I guess this is what you get when you dedicate a substantial portion of your salary cap to an underperforming repeatedly injured deviant.

Browns re-sign Bush

Other news:

"Pickett was not acquired to be the No. 1 quarterback, so probably by the weekend they'll have Kirk Cousins," Zac Jackson of The Athletic said during an appearance on 92.3 The Fans' Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima. "March 16, the Falcons owe him $10 million and everybody expects that they won't pay him that.

"If they do, we'll see what's next, but probably Kirk Cousins. Always has been No. 1 plan. That's kinda been out there since December."

Which scenario would you rather see happen:

A) Browns sign Cousins, then draft Carter/Hunter & pick a QB later in draft
B) Browns draft Ward/Sanders and don’t sign another veteran QB
C) Browns don’t sign another vet QB but still draft Carter/Hunter then a QB later in draft

???

Plot twist...Pickett was acquired to be the #1 QB.

Can we have a D) none of the above?

Ward and Sanders are average NFL QBs at best and not worthy of the pick. Carter is not ready to be a top notch edge and already has a foot issue. Hunter is 180 pounds soaking wet. He's Denzel but can also play receiver.

Trade down?? … not sure anyone wants to trade

Therein lies the problem. I think there are a number of good players/solid starters outside of those considered the top 5 so I think it's a great year to have as many picks as possible from the middle of the 1st to the start of the third. However, as you suggest, it is all lining up like there won't be many looking to move up due to need and the lack of standout talent.

And now the stories come out about Garrett: missing mandatory meetings, texting during the sessions, arriving late often ( one report was his arrival at 11:30 for a 1 o'clock kickoff), etc. Much of the blame goes to the Browns who put up with it, but if he wanted to play for a winner, he sure wasn't doing anything to set an example of wanting to win.

Lovely. Quite the team leader. From top to bottom this franchise is a dysfunctional mess.

Reputable sources?

Myles presser at 11 AM tomorrow.

I wonder if anyone will ask:
1) Are the rumors about you being late and no showing true? and
2) Are you disloyal or are you a liar?

You browns fans, Garrett is the one player who has performed at a high level every year and you want to pi** him off by asking questions like that. Every think the source behind those stories has an axe to grind. Almost any fan base would take Garrett in a heartbeat, and you question his loyalty LOL. Results speaker louder than words.
