Cleveland Browns 2024 Edition

4th and 3, game on the line, and you make your QB, who can run, drop back 5-7 yards.

GET STEFANSKI OUT OF THE PLAYCALLING, OR OUT OF TOWN.

This says it all:

Against the Raiders, a third-down pass down the deep right side to Jerry Jeudy was broken up when a defender got his helmet on the ball; and after the two-minute warning, Harris hit Watson with an early snap that turned into a fumble, and Watson had to fall on it for a 6-yard loss. Next play, his pass to tight end Jordan Akins was batted down.

“I think it was just miscommunication,” Watson said. “Just got to execute better, be more locked in.”

Finally with one last chance for the game-winning TD, Watson took a 10-yard sack on fourth and 3 from the 9 with Akins seemingly open in the end zone.

How long are fans supposed to swallow this " miscommunication" excuse that happens every week? Since it's the same excuse every week, we can either conclude that the players are stupid, with no possibility of playing intelligently, or that the practices are lax and they are woefully unprepared to play.

The Raiders entered the game as the worst rushing team in the NFL with an average of 51 yards per game. They'd had only 153 yards rushing for the season. Today, they had152 yards rushing.
^This is the most troubling part of the game yesterday. With the O-Line destroyed, and the tough part of the schedule just around the corner, the defense has to be rock of this team. Yesterday is was a creampuff, not a rock.

Yet another game was right there for the winning, and the Browns would not, could not take it. Same litany of mistakes, the obvious ones:
- 82 yard TD called back for holding
- missed XP
- Cooper's drop becomes a pick and a Raiders score
- roughing the passer leads to a Raiders score

Yet still the game could have been won. This loss is not on #4 - he looked good.

Same old, same old:

“I’ll say that we need to get better, and we need to get better fast,” edge rusher Ogbo Okoronkwo said. “Luckily we have a week of practice to correct those things, get ourselves in better position to make those plays. That’s unacceptable. And we put that on us.”
“I feel like the majority of it was tackling,” Myles Garrett said after the game. “I feel like we had too many missed tackles and we just got to wrap up. A lot of guys going in with their shoulder trying to lay that big hit and it came in clutch down the stretch with that forced fumble. But for the majority of the plays, the second man’s got to be the one to force the ball out. The first guy’s got to wrap up and slow runner down or stop his momentum. So that’s something to take from it when we watch the film.”

Don't know how much blame I can put on Stefanski. The reality is this teams roster is not good and will take a lot of time to get better.

Hindsight is 20/20 but Haslam almost certainly forced the Watson trade and signing and Berry is his yes man. That may go down to be the worst trade and contract in NFL history. Did Watson play terrible yesterday? No, but again he wasn't a difference maker at all. Part of the problem is he really has no weapons to work with, and the offensive line stinks. Injuries play a role there, but when you don't have early round picks, you suffer on depth, be that on the offensive line, receivers, or the linebacking core and secondary.

Watson isn't a leader either. It's painfully obvious that Copper does not want to play with this guy. Jeudy is OK, but again, you could've went out and drafted someone if you had the picks.

The only way to win in this league seems to be getting a good QB in the draft, having him be good almost immediately, and use his first 4-5 years to go and win on that first contract. Then when you resign him you need to go back and rebuild through the draft. Kansas City has mastered that.

Stefanski is ultimately the fall guy. But don't be surprised when the Eagles hire him and they turn it around. We for some reason believe this idea that this team has a good roster and they don't. Blaming the coach only gets us so far.

The Browns can't score 20 points to save their lives. Washington is lighting up defenses.

Our best bet is Daniels fizzles out a bit and the Browns get some kind of offensive momentum for longer than the first drive. Daniels doesn't light up the stat sheet but he doesn't turn the ball over.

Right now, the Browns have three top notch NFL players. One is playing hurt (Garrett), one is often hurt and can't tackle (Ward) and Bitonio. The only other player that has stood out to me is JOK. Other than those players, the position groups are all very average or below average. Much of that is on the front office for poor talent evaluation and mortgaging multiple drafts for a guy with poor judgment both off and on the field.

Time to trade away JOK, Ward, Garrett, and Bitonio. Add in Teller if he gets healthy. Let Chubb walk, he deserves a chance to win if he has anything left. Save money and stock pile draft picks and either dump Watson or allow him to wallow in this muddy mess his contract created for a year and rid of him the following season. Full rebuild time

The Haslams and the FO are focused on hosting the Super Bowl in a new stadium, the rest of the AFC North is focused on actually playing in the game. Funny thing is if this team stinks (right now they really stink) the publics willingness to get fleeced isn't going to be there. They aren't loveable losers anymore since the Watson signing.

Stefanski's press conference is at4ish. Don't bother, because here is what he will say:

1. We have to play better
2. We need to tackle better
3. We need to eliminate mistakes and cut down on penalties
4. We need to communicate better
5. We need to do a better job coaching
6. Deshaun is improving
7. No timetable for Chubb
8. We hope that the linemen will be back, but it's day to day.

I never got that great roster thing, either. That’s why I predicted 8-9. They got lucky last year against a weak schedule…especially in the back half. And Stefanski got lucky to finally get a Browns QB that actually fits the mold of the ideal QB for his offense. The D was good at home against mostly bad teams and nonexistent on the road. All the warts showed up against Houston and they are all still here for all to see. And for the most part Berry’s drafts stink.

You forgot. He will begin or end many of those sentences with “Tony” or “Mary Kay.”

Gronk somewhat addressed this yesterday. Brady left millions on the table so his teams could afford good supporting casts and win Super Bowls. The current crop of egotistical twats only care about their wallets. They are too ignorant to understand that when they take all the money they are not leaving enough for good d, or their own protection (good o-line). With Haslams and Stefanski this franchise is doomed.
The ideal qb for a Stefanski offense is an uncoachable egomaniac who is a poor teammate, poor character, and mediocre player?

No. The ideal QB for Stefanski is the Cousins, Purdy, Manning take the snap under center and run through your progressions. Stefanski briefly had that QB in Flacco and everyone on offense benefitted from the coach and QB being on the same page for once.

“I need to NOT call a straight drop back play on 4th and three with the game on the line”

Agreed. I’m guessing the colts are happy the browns didn’t want him.

Cooper doesn't want to play because he didn"t get paid like he thought he should have. The Browns have not drafted a talented receiver since Josh Gordon, so don't make it sound like the browns are some draft day gods. they have whiffed numerous times in the first round and every other round of the draft. in the past 25 years the browns only hit on 2 first round draft picks Myles Garret and Joe Thomas, the rest have been either busts or players that were average at best.

It’s starting to look like they hit on Baker.

I do not believe Baker would be the player he is today if he had stayed with Cleveland. Getting run out of Cleveland, the short stent in Carolina, the win in LA after being there less than 48 hours with the team and then the 1/2 season playing for McDermott & the Rams - those things humbled him and I believe made him a better player.

If he had stayed in Cleveland and the Watson deal never happened, there is a good chance the Browns would have moved onto someone else. Baker & the Browns organization was on thin ice before Watson came along.

Glad to see Baker have some success, I do miss his commercials.

I guess we will never know. Baker should have never played through the injury and Haslam/Berry should've never overreacted.

This teams window to make a run closed last year. Letting Baker walk and trading for Deshaun wasted 2022. Got lucky in 2023. The window is closed (or at the very least quickly closing) now. Chubb is unlikely to return to dominant form, Garrett is in an injury cycle, as is Ward. The offensive line is completely hollowed out. An average at best receiving core.

I don't know if Baker staying would have made things better at this point right now, but it certainly couldn't be much worse.
