Cleveland Browns 2024 Edition

5th concussion and he’s been out for over a week. Hopefully Ward gets better but at some point one has to be thinking about hanging the cleats up for their health. Ward still has 3 years left on his deal. If he were to retire before the end of the contract the Browns could come after some of the guaranteed $$$ Ward has been paid out.

I feel bad for Ward and the Browns. Such a tremendous player when healthy, and you know he wants to be out there. But I agree that he probably needs to hang em up. That many concussions is nothing to mess with.

Mary Kay is a gem. DTR has supplanted Winston as the #2 QB. I like DTR but it's not clear he's even beat out Huntley for a roster spot.

No kidding. If it were me, it would be Watson/Winston/Huntley, especially if the Watson experiment is ended after this season and they just eat the rest of his deal and roll with Winston as starter until they can draft their QB. Huntley would be a decent second string in that scenario.

I do not believe the Browns would part ways with Watson until after the 2025 season. If they were to cut Watson & do what the Broncos did with Russell Wilson, Cleveland would incur:

2024 - $200.7 mil cap hit
2025 - $136.9 mil cap hit
2026 - $72.9 mil cap hit
2027 - $8.9 mil cap hit

Watson is most likely on the team thru the 2025 season.

It’s clear DTR cannot throw downfield much more than 15 yards or so.

When defenses know that, you’ll struggle to score 17 points.

I still can't believe this deal. It would be hard to stomach even if he was winning some games.

No surprise here, the injury Chubb sustained was sever and he will start the season on the PUP list. Chubb has always conducted himself in a professional manner and by all accounts appears to be a very standup individual. Hopefully Chubb can come back at some point during the season.

Ugggh. If I felt Stefanski would truly design his offense to play to Watson’s strengths I would have some optimism, but I don’t think Stefanski is capable of it. This will be a wasted opportunity. Especially when Kirk Cousins, the prototype Stefanski QB, was available for much less than Watson.

I was a little surprised to see the Browns cut Foreman but figured it would be something like this. It's crazy that we went from having one of the top running back rooms in the league for the last 5 or so years to near the bottom. I'm afraid when Chubb comes back, he will be a shell of himself and will be kept around because of being a great teammate more than a great player. I don't think Ford is a starter many places in the league either.

I’m surprised Berry isn’t getting more heat about his very spotty draft record. Couple that with his courting of Watson and he should be on a hotter heat than he is. I don’t think the Browns will have a winning record this season and the Watson experiment will officially be classified as a failure. Maybe then Berry gets some heat.

I agree. I would have liked to have seen what John Dorsey could have done with a few more years at the helm.

Everyone gets fired if they have a losing record, that enough heat?

11 wins is the floor for this team, no excuse for anything less.

This talk about trading Winston is crazy. You brought him here to be the veteran backup. Going with DTR as the backup is irresponsible and proves you didn't learn a thing from last year.

It seems that the Browns are desperate that DTR work out and prove that they are not totally incompetent at developing a qb ( which they are). If he is second string, look for exactly the same thing as last year, since Watson's availability throughout is doubtful...and that's being optimistic.

I'm an optimistic Browns fan, but 11??? I assume you have seen the schedule?

Vegas says the over/under is 8.5. If you are truly thinking 11 wins, you should bet the farm on the over. Seems like a slam dunk for you.

That’s funny right there. This is the Browns. Their track record of qb drafts is, well, awful!

I've seen the schedule, so what? Every year a team isn't as good as projected and vice versa. Its also about when you play more than who you play.

If they stay relatively healthy, with the talent on the roster, there's no reason they shouldn't win 11 games at least. A losing record is a complete disaster that blows up the roster and coaching staff.

I’m thinking Berry might not have been instrumental in getting Watson.

How would he not be? I can see Stefanski not being thrilled about it, since it is absolutely not his style of QB, but I assume the owners let Berry and Depodesta call the shots about the roster.

I think Haslem forced it on him

Browns just keep digging themselves a deeper and deeper Deshaun Watson hole. Perhaps this move means the Browns may try to make a trade for someone this season. Regardless, Browns are definitely tied to Watson for the 2025 & 2026 season.

I think they were tied to him anyways, so this move frees up cap space for next season. I really wish we could go back and not do this deal.

No, this move frees up cap space for this season, 2024. Browns now are $51.6 mil under the 2024 team salary cap of $255.4 mil. If the browns do not use the $51.6 mil in 2024 i believe some/most of it can be rolled into 2025 season. This restructure now pushes out Watson cap hit

* 2025 - $72.9 mil
* 2026 - $72.9 mil
* 2027 - $17.9 mil (dead cap $$$. Watson is a unrestricted free agent after the 2026 season)

The Browns salary cap projections for future years:
* 2025 - $66.8 mil over the projected $260 mil salary cap (2nd worse in the league)
* 2026 - $21.8 mil over the projected $280 mil salary cap (worse in the league)

Huntley released; Foreman returns.

The Browns decided that four quarterbacks were too many and two running backs weren't enough.

The team has released quarterback Tyler Huntley on Thursday, while planning to re-sign running back D'Onta Foreman, a league source confirmed for the Beacon Journal. Foreman had his contract initially terminated by the Browns on Tuesday, with the plan being to bring him back later.

I was impressed by Huntley in his time with the Ravens. I would have liked to see him take the next step, or at least maintain, and be a higher tier backup. I love DTR's athleticism, but I don't understand the infatuation with him from this staff. They're the pros though, so hopefully he proves my eyes wrong and becomes a superstar like the athletic reincarnation of Kurt Warner. Watson pulls a Banks and goes down, DTR comes in and shines. Then they can cut ties with Watson and DTR will lead our Brownies, at last, to the Super Bowl!
