New rule will enable St. X to use depth

St. Xavier coach Al Runkel has a few difficult decisions to make this season when it comes to his roster - but thanks to a new Ohio High School Athletic Association rule that is being put into place this year, Runkel's job may not be as challenging as expected.

The OHSAA has instituted a new "at will" rule to be used for all bowling coaches across the state. The "at-will" rule will allow a coach to switch bowlers in the middle of a game if desired.

"I'm looking forward to the season and this new rule," said Runkel. "It could benefit us because we have a roster full of really talented boys. It's a good rule for our coaches to have. If a bowler is not performing well in his first few frames, to have the ability to replace him will relieve the pressure off the kids."

The Bombers have no returning starters from last year's team which won the Greater Catholic League-South before being eliminated in the sectional tournament.

This year's St. X squad features a two-handed bowler in junior Joe Bruns and seniors Bryan Walsh and Tim Sause. Runkel says that both Walsh and Sause are capable of averaging 200.

"Last year we were vertically talented," Runkel says. "We had a lot of talent at the top. This year we'll be very wide in talent instead of vertical. We're going to have 10 boys that I think will do very well."

"We will definitely be a better team in February then we will be at the beginning."

Senior Michael Luken and junior Ben Brauch return to anchor an Elder team that went 13-7 last season.

Luken was named to the GCL first team after averaging 196 while Brauch's 198 average earned a place on the GCL's second team. Brauch also was the Panthers' top qualifier for last year's district tournament.

"The guys bowled a lot over the summer so we should be ready to go from the first match," said Elder head coach Dave Sievers. "I'm looking forward to find out who our leader will be this year."

Mason returns starters Aaron Markvan, Carson Turjanica, and Daron Prater to its team this season.

"All of the starters have 200-plus ability," said Comets coach Joe Riestenberg. "But consistency will always be the key."

Jason Ashcraft returns for his senior season at Milford after finishing 51st of 132 in last season's state tournament. Ashcraft led the Eagles to their first trip to the regional tournament in school history.

For those of you not familiar with the "at will" rule:

1.6) Substitutions-A coach may substitute a player “at will”at any time before or during
a game
. However, once removed from the lineup, the removed player(s) may not reenter
play until the start of the next regular or Baker game. A player once removed
is reclassified as a substitute bowler and may be used as a substitute bowler in any
spot in the team lineup upon legal return to play (subsequent game). A coach substituting
any player for any reason
must notify the match scorekeeper and opposing
coach at the time of the substitution. The partial game score produced by the removed
player and substitute shall not be computed in the individual average of either player.
Penalty: An illegal substitute shall be assessed a score of zero (0) for all frames, or
part of a frame, bowled.

It is important to note that the team lineup (order of bowling) for all regular
games must remain the same during the match. A substitute bowler must enter
the lineup in the same order as the bowler being replaced.

Note: Any frame, or part of a frame bowled, counts in the total number of contests
bowled in the season limitation of 22 matches.

It is great to see bowlers get the recognition they deserve as athletes.

Can you believe there is no mention of the RB "Goddesses" of the bowling lanes in the article?
