Central Buckeye Conference (CBC) 2023

I know there is chatter on the OHC thread (CBC little brother, :ROFLMAO: ) that includes the CBC and some, and me, were wondering if there is a 2023 CBC Thread. Maybe there is but I am tired of searching or just too ignorant on how to search properly OR maybe I cannot raed rihgt. In any event, here it is.

What is going on with the conference since there are coaching changes, divisional changes and generally the outlook for the upcoming year? Can't get here soon enough?

Coaching changes: Who are they and what can we expect?
Schedule: Does Graham play Minser in week 2? Any interesting OOC games in the conference?
Divisional changes: Shawnee to the Mad River and Urbana to Kenton Trail....IMO, this is a better situation for the Braves but who knows. The Climbers had a great last year and I was surprised and entertained with their dog fighting abilities. Is this year a reality check for them or can they sustain and upset any of the BIG 3 in the KT? Can Shawnee finally finish out a year, preceived weaker divisional play, without getting the pizz beat out of their key players and make a deeper run in the playoffs?
Did Springfield HS work out a NIL deal for the Bellefontaine QB....relax, it's a frick'n joke, but seriously. Does that talented, SEC recruit break out in 2023?

My way too early predictions, based on school mascots, team colors, concession stands and/or generally how I feel this morning:
KT
Bellefontaine
London
Alder
Tecumseh
Kenton Ridge
Urbana

MR
Shawnee
North Union
Graham
Indian Lake
Ben Logan
Northwestern

Agree for the most part with the predictions after what I saw last season and heard about the upcoming rosters. Shawnee BETTER take care of business… Not sure how much more “breaking out” the Bellefontaine kid has to do. I look for that offense to set the field on fire with the returning skill guys. That kid is special

Yes, Minster makes a return trip to Graham in week 2.

CBC records vs “little brother” OHC ever since the last major realignment cycle

2022: 4-5

2021: 4-3

2020 (Covid shortened, limited meetings): 2-1

2019: 6-5

2018: 5-3

2017: 6-2

it seems to be pretty even since 2019, especially considering even the smallest CBC school is larger than the biggest OHC school.

as for the Bellefontaine QB.. i’m sure Moe will make his move NEXT spring.. before the kids senior year.

the Shawnee/Urbana switch is intriguing but it’s the right thing to do. Shawnee deserves the chance to dominate schools similar in size to them- they have “played up” for awhile.

also, i saw the CBC finally decided to fix the crossover matchups and let the county schools play each other. good move.

as for Shawnee next year.. they get an absolutely horrible draw scheduling wise. they will take trips to North Union, Ben Logan, and Indian lake in the same season. i guess that means they will have a much easier time with travel in 2024.

What does a trip to North Union or Indian Lake mean?? Am I missing something?

This might have been true pre-North Union entering the league. I doubt North Union has ever been bigger than Greenon, even at the bottomed out enrollment trough Greenon hit around 5-6 years ago.

Greenon is noticeably larger than North Union, and is either single digits bigger or smaller in enrollment (combined boys and girls) than all of Shawnee, Northwestern, and Indian Lake, and is within about 10-12 kids per class of both Ben Logan and Graham. In another couple cycles, I would expect them to likely be larger than all of the Mad River division schools except for maybe Shawnee if they start getting an early enrollment return on the new developments in Springfield Township.

that must be pretty recent. potentially due to the new school. i think i was looking at the 2019 OHSAA numbers and Greenon was still smaller than both Shawnee and North Union. Greenon bottomed out in the 150’s for boys enrollment i believe. i think North Union even played a couple of seasons in D4? Greenon was in danger of falling to D6 for a few seasons.

Greenon is currently at 191 for boys. The cutoff for D4 football was a believe 205, and something like 201 for D2 boys basketball. With the multiplier add-on, they were the largest D3 boys basketball school for the current count that began this year. In two years I expect them to go back to D4 for football and D2 for basketball.

If North Union has ever played D4 in football, I think it had to be in 2010 or earlier. They are a lot smaller than everyone else in this league.

wow, Greenon’s growth must’ve sprouted! i think in 2019-ish they were near 165 boys.

looks like North Unions’ last time in D4 was 2012, when there were only 6 divisions- so you aren’t far off on that

Maybe "breaking out" was not the rigtht words to say and YES, the kid is special, with a great arm (superior arm), plays within the scheme of the team and from what I understand a great kid and team mate....BUT... He was second in the conference in passing yards, second in the conference with a QBR for QBs throwing over 2000 yards, second in the conference in YPG, third in the conference with TD but first in completion percentage. Dont get me wrong, this kid is going to be a good one in the next couple of years and has a unlimited future on Saturdays....BUT, his stats dont really have the optics of a P5, AT THIS TIME.

Donahoe was the primary stat leader in the conference and his gutty performance against Massie was some of the most impressive QB play I have seen in a while in the CBC, yet the kid is not even Co OPOTY in the MR. Is he even getting the responses from colleges? Curious to see how he does losing his top receivers this year.

I know, I know, college coaches and scouts know more about all of this than me but I tend to look at stats and the optics of the kid playing ONLY in HS. Is he better than Cade Rice, who had similar stats but was a huge running threat? If so, why? Where was/is Rice?

I would love for this kid to set the world on fire next year and the Chiefs win the first ever CBC State Title, which would bring a lot of "credibility" to the strength of the conference but right now I see him in the mixing bowl; big, mid and small school scholarships...his Jr year is where he needs to make hay or those SEC interests may fade. I'm sure you have rectruiting site data, blah, blah that will try to prove me wrong; but is this kid really the real deal? Or, is he more aligned with a MAC school or possibly lost in the non dressed scholarship P5 school?

Knightsfan is usually pretty good at hitting the nail on the head for the OHC and CBC. Did I miss something with your post? What are your takes on the conference?
i think he is a B-town fan who is upset that i mentioned Moe recruiting St Clair before his senior year.. and i don’t feel as if it was a wrong statement. Moe would be SMART to add a QB of his caliber to the roster.

Wing-T, I'd more align him with a Tecumseh rooter (IMO), he has good posts and conference insight but why digress. IMO, Moe puts kids in college at the highest level that the kid's talent affords them. I not a fan and he has had a questionable, documented, background but in reality, this kid would be a better fit in the Springfield system than Bellefontaine. No matter, I am a fan of St. Clair and hope and pray for his continued success.

I think us old farts sit around and wonder what if and maybe but the kid seems solid in the Belle system and that is great. Rootin for him and the conference as a whole.

Finally, sometimes people just need to get over themselves; this is a message board and we are six months out from the first '23 game, so they need to deal with us "old farts" speculating and stiring conversation.

On a side note, I saw LELL had a topic deleted...Dude, dont mess with those Massill(0)n folks, lol.

i just think it is ignorant to ignore the fact that Moe has already successfully poached a top QB from a small school. the kid played in a state title (something i don’t think will happen in Bellefontaine the next 2 years) and went to a top FCS school. now, is St Clair different? absolutely, as he already has power 5 offers. having a great year at a school like Springfield and playing in a state title may get him the coveted Ohio State offer.

i’m a St Clair fan, I am a fan of all area players and root for them to go as far as they can with their god given ability.. i’m not saying that going to Springfield would be the right move or even that i support it.. but it would be ignorant to not acknowledge the possibility.

I am a fan of a school who had a star QB poached by a larger school. I didn’t like that it happened but without question it seemed to be a great experience and got him to where he desired to be (undefeated season and a positive COVID test away from potentially playing for a state championship, and a full ride).

Yup, they cry and whine to Yappi until he get's tired of them crying and then he shuts/deletes threads. They are just embarrassing if you ask me.

I'm a big St. Clair fan too. He's polite and very respectful. His parents should be very, very proud of that young man and how he handles himself. I watch him pick apart Shawnee when he played against them. He's calm, cool and collective and makes big plays with his feet or arm. It was so funny watching the Bellefontaine coach go nuts when he had 2nd or 3rd and 15+ and St. Clair getting the first down one way or another.

Anyone know when Urbana and Bellefontaine play each other? They always played each other as part of the CBC crossover but now that they are on the same side, just curious when they will be. Easily the 2 best QBs in the CBC squaring off, should be a great game!

per the CBC, the game will take place week 8 @Bellefontaine

that game was never a crossover, however. they played week 3 as a non-league game. i would love to see this rivalry move to week 10 in the near future.

I don’t pretend to know enough about any of the kids in the conference to really compare. I saw the words “break out” and just wondered what else he had to do. What you said makes total sense.

I'm just glad they are playing, regardless of the week. I miss the digs on Urbana from the Belle faithful on the statue at the roundabout...which BTW, if you are going to have a roundabout in city center, for the love of God put out memo on how to navigate it. Roundabouts are not a new thing people. ;)

Also, can the U install a net to keep the kickers from booting the ball in the street?

Internal hire. Not entirely sure about the name, but I think they've been involved for a while there.
Probably Rich Clark.... Long time assistant coach in the Miami Valley area. Played HS ball at Northeastern then went on to play at Urbana University. Assistant coach at Greenon for a few years and currently at Graham. PE teacher in the district plus Bowling coach. Has a boy getting ready to come through the HS system. The only internal hire I can think of that would be suitable for the gig.
