CAVS 2022-2023

LeVert re-signed on a two year deal...great if it works, if not, short-term flexibility and probably a nice expiring $$$ trade piece.

Good rotational piece signing in Niang...6'7 guy that's a 40% 3pt shooter. Averaged about 8.7 ppg the last two years for the Sixers averaging about 21 mpg off the bench.

Seem to be trying to work out some type of sign-and-trade deal with Miami for Max Strus.

Strus would be another nice 2nd unit guy that would add credible perimeter shooting. 37% career 3pt shooter that's averaged 10-11 ppg the last two years for Miami.

I don't have a problem with those signings, but they're not much moving the needle.

Here's hoping that someone on the staff wakes up and discovers an offense that actually takes advantage of the guard play and occasionally pushes the damn ball. I love the defense but being 26th in team scoring won't get them very far.

I don't see any way to really move the needle without trading Allen or Garland, whether talent, toughness, or both.

Adding some guys that can add shooting to support the current core (Mitchell, Mobley, Garland, Allen) is probably the best they can do...and it would make a lot more sense if they picked up the pace some offensively as reasoned above.

I guess Cedi will never lead the Cavs to a title as predicted by brian.

I guess they figure that they can mix and match Strus, Niang and Lavert into solid minutes from the 3 spot. They could still use a couple of guys with a nasty edge.

I never said that.that a lie.I said sexton could with this group. But made the very bad mitchell trade.

When Lebron left you were allllllll in on Cedi. You're lucky we can't search that far back!

Oh, and that's the same Sexton Utah is shopping all over the league because they, like everyone lese in the world except you, sees his shortcomings. I like Sexton but he's not ever leading anyone to a championship.

Koby Altman basically flipped Cedi and Lamar Stevens for Niang and Strus with 1-2 2nd rounders as filler. Considering they shot somewhere around 32% from 3 in the Knicks series (and at an ungodly high volume)...I'd say pretty good tradeoffs made. The new LeVert deal is also relatively reasonable.

Would like to see some type of enforcer player as a combo forward....otherwise, as noted by @clarkgriswold they need to pick up the pace some offensively and start going faster. Have a pair of good playmaker/scorer guards with a pair of lanky mobile guys, and as constructed now I'd say more often than not two of Niang/LeVert/Strus will be out there to space the floor and (hopefully) make shots as the 3 and either the backup 2 (Strus) or a backup small ball 4 (Niang).

Jazz shedding salary to try to position themselves to absorb something facilitating a three team deal.

Bigger framed body (245+ lbs at 6'11). Good backup option.

I like all the moves, though I don’t feel that it takes the Cavs over the top. It should get them past the lower end playoff teams like the Knicks and Hawks, but not enough to take them to the top of the East, unless…

…the team gels more now that they are used to Mitchell’s game AND Mobley starts to really show he’s heading to the next level.

But I still do not believe in JB.

If the Cavs have to make a choice between keeping Wade or Okoro, which one would you keep? I'm just tired of waiting for Okoro to become a two-way player. The Knicks left him wide open the whole series and he had no effect.

Hmm. Okoro is not the elite defender he was billed to be. He is tough under the glass for his size and he sometimes shocks everyone by putting the ball on the floor and driving to the hole and finishing. But he has little overall value. As for Wade, I’m not sure he does anything well. He’s just a guy.

With the moves they've made...Okoro is going to be lucky if he can consistently find 12-15 minutes a night.

Wade in theory can play some as a 4 if they small ball a lot.

I think that they're btter today than they were Thursday. We'll see whether the improved depth helps the team in the standings and playoffs.

You all realize that Strus is now your starting 3 right? A lot of people on here talking about him in a bench role.....that's not gonna happen.

PG Garland, Jerome, Rubio
SG Mitchell, LaVert, Jerome
SF Strus, Niang, Okoro
PF Mobley, Wade,
C Allen, Jones

Your crunch time minutes lineup will look like this...

Garland
Mitchell
Strus
Niang
Mobley

Niang is a physical defender, he's annoying and pesky, but can and often gets in foul trouble. Strus earned his role in Miami by being the best defender on that team. And we all know what Mobley brings to the table on defense. This is a really solid lineup to close games. Garland and Mitchell can drive and kick now and they'll be kicking to actual NBA shooters....not the dudes we had last year.....

Also - this is so premature...but Emoni Bates could factor into that rotation as well. He has the talent. And he's solidly 6'10 and can shoot.

How many of these players will not be on the team when the season starts?

Fedor was on radio today and said that the offered the Cavs are getting for Allen are merely " spare parts," which means that he will probably be on the team unless there is a huge offer.

Cleveland Cavaliers: A

Cleveland's goal this offseason was to come away with one viable wing to pair with their two star guards and their two star bigs. They ultimately landed two. Neither Georges Niang or Max Strus are especially strong defenders, but both will work wonders on an offense that took the seventh-fewest 3-pointers in the NBA last season. Besides, having Evan Mobley available to guard virtually any position makes it far easier to get away with questionable wing defense, and Isaac Okoro is still around as a defensive specialist when needed. Strus and Niang likely would have provided enough spacing for the Cavs to beat the Knicks, and now, they'll be around to help what should be an even better Cavaliers team this season. Caris LeVert was overpaid slightly at $16 million per year. It's hard to justify money beyond the mid-level exception for players who don't shoot or defend, but on only a two-year deal, he's extremely tradable and his contract will come off of the books right as Mobley's rookie extension kicks in. That's clever asset management for the Cavs in another stellar offseason.

Altman certainly went out and addressed a need in getting some players that could stretch the defense. My only concern is that Strus and Niang are marginal defensively which isn't a good fit with the team's emphasis on defense. Don't get me wrong, I'd much rather see a more productive offense and would be happy to see their defense slide a little in return. I think part of their strong defensive numbers was a result of their slow pace on offense and that damn well better improve.
