Back to the Central District

Wow, the powers of the Central District get hammered in their respective openers. UA loses to University 117 to 66; StX beats SC 111 to 59. Granted it is early and their opponents are 2 of the top 3 teams in the state, but UA & SC think of themselves as top teams in the state too. When was the last time that both suffered such a shallacking in the same season?

Consider the fact that three of the major metropolitan areas in the state essentially have only one competitive swim team. Nobody in Cincinnati challenges X, nobody in Cleveland challenges US and nobody in Toledo challenges TSF. UA and St Charles are both solid teams but as they compete with each other, it will make it harder for them to compete at the state level.

UA’s most difficult task is how to set its district lineup. SC had a nice run, but after 4 years order is restored to the Central District.

SC had a nice run, but after 4 years order is restored to the Central District.

In the interests of accuracy, St. Charles has won the last 5 District Meets. But you are correct that as things stand today UA is a prohibitive favorite to win the District. However, it's still December and things can change between now and February. Although UA will still be the favorite to win the meet; expect things to tighten by then and the meet to be competitive.

Central District team scores for the last 6 years:

Upper Arlington 347, St. Charles 207 - 2005
St. Charles 429, Upper Arlington 304 - 2006
St. Charles 471, Upper Arlington 352 - 2007
St. Charles 524,Upper Arlington 292 - 2008
St. Charles 496, Upper Arlington 428 - 2009
St. Charles 399.5, Upper Arlington 399 - 2010

Shockingly it appears that the newspaper had it wrong.

4 or 5 doesn't really matter. The important thing is that it ends this year! UA is back on top...and that's the way it will stay!

Great, we can give up now and not have to put the kids through the dreadful winter break training. I am so relieved that I don't have to ever worry about anyone else winning the Central District meet but UA.

How many District titles has UA won? Oh, well actually, it doesn't really matter.

Swimmeet.com

I agree that the current showing for UA on Swimmeet.com is impressive. However, with closer inspection, 24 of the 29 listings come from just 6 swimmers. Obviously, someone making the list 4 or 5 times is impressive for that swimmer, but meaningless from a team perspective, since that person will swim only two individual events in the district meet. Also, there is only one listing from a UA freshman. I would agree that UA is probably the favorite for the Central District this year, but would not agree that "order is being restored". Concerning St Charles, they are off to a bit of a slow start. They have had some early season injuries and they will rely on a strong freshman class, a class that honestly has performed better than UAs. I would not count them out just yet.

preeder and scwat have made great points! Just because UA looks dominant on paper now doesn't mean anything. If they don't train right over these next few weeks it won't matter. Also the same guys can't swim every event. You cannot win a District Title with 6 swimmers. You have to have depth to win your District. See St. X every year in the SW. They have those guys at the top but they also have many more score in events that don't make it to State.

There is a lot of training/swimming to be done before you crown any team champ!

SC vs UA JAN 7 AT UA. I KNOW MR. JONES SC WILL NOT SCORE ANY POINTS AND WILL DISBAND THE SWIM TEAM AFTER THIS MEET AND STICK TO WATER POLO. LOL

No, SC will score points...it will just be from placing 2, 3, 4 & 5...primarily 3, 4, & 5. It will be very one-sided!

Current rankings as a possible outcome

MR: UA 1:38 to 1:40
200 Free: UA, 1,2,3
200 IM: UA, 1,2,3
50: UA Rabe 22.21, SC Willi 22.26, UA Rabe 22.31, SC Polter 22.81
Fly: SC Willi 54.14, UA Jelen 54.32, UA Cutler 54.33, SC Swanson 54.53
100 Free: UA 1,2,3
500 Free: UA 1,2,3
200 FR: UA 1:28, SC 1:29
Back: UA Neri 53.99, UA Reardon 55.46, UA Trace 55.86, SC Swanson 55.93
Breast: UA Rabe 1:02, SC McKinley 1:02, UA Reardon 1:03, SC D'angelo and Harath 1:04
400 FR: UA 3:15, SC 3:23

A lot of these are the same guys in each event, (UA: Long, Neri, Rabe, Rabe Reardon, SC: Willi, Swanson)

So it's de Bear vs. Gear on line-ups, the strategist wins.

Based on this, rjones may not be far off...for once. But then again there's a reason that they swim the meet. UA should win, but SC may make it closer than it looks to be on paper. It should give both teams a sense of where they are in their training for February.

UA vs. SC

SC vs UA JAN 7 AT UA.

For some reason these teams did not swim head to head last year. Don't know what happened but it's nice to see their on each others schedule again. With the relationship between de Bear & Gear I would expect that to continue. That said, as much as I hate to admit it, UA could take all the firsts this year. Regardless, I would expect each team to produce some season best times. Should be a fast meet.

Word was that SC didn't want to schedule UA last year.

If I recall, there was some mention about this last year. There was supposed to be a tri meet with Centerville, St. Charles, and UA with Watterson girls in the mix. UA did not want a tri meet because their depth would not have helped them and the meet was in Centerville. UA backed out. The meet with Centerville, St. Charles with Watterson went on as planned.

Here's a nice profile of Olentangy Liberty's Dmitry Dolgov who is one of the Central District elite swimmers.

http://www.thisweeknews.com/live/co...sports/dolgov-hopes-to-live-up-to-legacy.html

Wow, no weight training and he already swims that fast. Wait until he starts adding muscle and his body fully arrives, he will drop tons of time. Remember Adam Ritter from St. Charles a few years back. He was a similar build to Dmitry in high school. Don't know whether he lifted or not in high school. But he did very well in college and then has continued to place highly in the national meets. Don't know about the Olympics, but it will be interesting to see where Dmitry is timewise in 5 or 6 years.

This suggests that the district meet will be slower than last year. Also, while UA dominates the number of top 10 times that its swimmers have; there is a noticable decline in the number of top times held by SC swimmers. That seems to fit with the conventional wisdom that UA will take back the district title.

Time comparison

Very interesting comparison. Being a number lover, I am curious about the timing of last's year's Ned Reeb. Seeing that most of the current 1-10 times were achieved at this season's Ned Reeb in December, I wonder if some of last year's 1-10 were achieved at last year's Ned Reeb which was in January when most had more training under their belts.

Curious comparison. Will like to see how the Central District times compare from 2010-2011

Check out UA’s dominance in the latest report of top times for the Central District. They lead all 3 relays…by a full second in the 200 Free Relay, 2 seconds in the medley & a whopping 5+ seconds in the 400 Free (truth be told they probably have the next several fastest times in each relay). The Bears are just as dominant in the individual events, with 5 of the top 10 times in the 500; 4 in the 200, 100 & IM; 3 in the 100 Back; with a fall off of only 2 in the Fly, 50 & Breast. It would take an all star team to beat them, and that would be close.

While it is correct that UA is dominating the D1 top times in the Central District, this looks like a down year overall for that district. Check out the top 20 times in the state and UA & the D1 Central District seem to be MIA. In relays the Central District has only 2 of the top 20 times in the medley & 400 free (1 is from a D2 school in the 400) & 4 of 20 in the 200 relay (again 1 from a D2 school). The dominating bears rank no. 8 in the 200 & no. 9 in the medley & 400. In individual times the Central District has none in the breast, only 1 (a D2 swimmer) in the IM, 2 in fly (both D2 swimmers) & 200, 3 in the back & the 500, 5 in the 50 (top 2 by D2 swimmers) & 100 (1 by D2 swimmer). The only top 10 times are from the D2 guys—in the 50 & fly. Individually UA only has times in the 200(15th), 500(12th & 16th) & back(14th). At this point it doesn't appear that a Central District swimmer will win any event, and very few will make it to the championship heat. Of course things may change at the end of the season. But for now, you’re right mr. jones, UA is dominant in a very slow district. And perhaps it would take a Central District all star team to beat them…or just a team from outside Central Ohio.

Aquacard is correct while I have no doubt that UA is dominate in the top10 of central (go to swimmeet.com) Six of those swimmers are listed in multiple events: Neri (5), Long, Reardon and Ad Rabe (4), Cutler and An Rabe (3). If I checked properly some of them are even listed in all three relays based on times and results. Also no diver for the bonus points. Actually looks tighter than you think Mr. Jones. Hold on to your bootstraps for the meet at The Ohio State University I predict closer than you imagin strategy is going to play a huge part in this one. I also predict a big puff of hot air at Canton. With all this talent I guess we will all see what kind coaches Mr. Gear and Mr. deBear really are and what the future holds for the Cardinals and Bears.
I think I am catching on to this guys, let me know if I step over any lines.

I think I am catching on to this guys, let me know if I step over any lines.

You are catching on quickly, but you miss the finer points of mr. Jones' position. Regardless of whatever the facts say, the Bears will prevail and dominate all. I predict that Mr. Jones will predict multiple UA state wins, their 400 FR may go under 3:00 and embarrass all in their wake.

Seriously, the District is down, but if you look at the Ohio rankings, there are several swimmers who are ranked high in multiple events, so this is just a placeholder for strategies of event selection. And, of course Districts at OSU are always fast and we will see lots of place shuffling. I am very excited for this meet and hope to be announcing!
