Are you a true West Sider??

Back in November, Fr. Jim wrote a tribute to Pete in the St. Dominic bulletin:

This weekend, there will be a memorial tribute to Pete Rose at Great American Ball Park. His death has been an invitation to reflect on my memories of competing against him growing up. My earliest memory of him was a Pee Wee football game at Bold Face Park, watching our St. William defensive backs chasing Pete from behind as he ran for a touchdown. I have many memories of playing against him in Knothole baseball. One play stands out for me in B Knothole. I was playing shortstop and Pete tried to steal second. We had him dead to right, and he tried unsuccessfully to run me over. I recalled that play when he won the All-Star game by running over catcher Ray Fosse. Pete was a very smart player, always looking for an edge. He carried this over into his professional career with the Big Red Machine. I would have loved to have been in on those conversations between Rose, Morgan, and Bench talking about various baseball situations in the dugout. I remember the Elder – West High game on Thanksgiving, my Senior year. West High won that game. The star running back was Pete Rose! Pete was a catcher all the way through Knothole baseball, but when he got to high school, he switched to second base because he didn’t have a strong enough arm to make it to the big leagues as a catcher. My favorite memory was as a member of Elder’s baseball team, beating Pete and Eddie Brinkman and West High, 3-1 for the city championship in 1959. We played the game at Cheviot field house park. Pete hit a ball off Scotty Segerthat hit the light pole in left center. We went on to win the state championship. Pete went on to break Ty Cobb’s hit record. One thing you can say about Pete Rose, he was “single minded” in his determination to play major league baseball! Rest in peace, Pete!

I was thinking maybe there is a pickup game in baseball heaven coming up and Pete is managing one of the teams. When St. Peter asked him who he wanted on his team, Pete said "I want the Walsh kid from Elder!"

A popular Cincinnati coffee shop company is readying to debut its sixth location in the region.

Urbana Cafe is opening its new shop in Price Hill Monday, Feb. 10. The 1,500-square-foot space is located in the Warsaw Avenue Creative Campus, at 3114 Warsaw Ave. It’s a development from community group and nonprofit Price Hill Will, which works to restore old buildings in the neighborhood.

"Well it appears to be in the shape of a Big Boy, sir."

"Good God! He's back!"

"In many ways, Big Boy never left, sir. He's always offered the same high quality meals at competitive prices."

Interesting news today that Big Boy Restaurant Group is working to acquire some of the recently shuttered Frisch's Big Boy locations which may be in violation of a 2001 agreement that gave Frisch's rights to Big Boy in Kentucky, Indiana, most of Ohio and Tennessee. https://newsnky.com/bigboy.html

If you dig into the job openings they have listed the locations that might be reopened by this effort could include Delhi and Colerain along with Blue Ash, Beechmont and Lebanon in the Cincinnati area.

Big Boy ought to just buy Frisch's outright so they can keep the Frisch's name going.

That's a good idea. It would probably make everyone happy since it would give the national Big Boy chain the opportunity to buyout Frisch's rights locally. The Enquirer has an article today about the owners of the national Big Boy company trying to take over some of the closed Frisch's locations. https://archive.is/DY7IO

West-siders! It's almost fish fry season. Hope to see a lot of you in a couple weeks. One change at St. Al's is Fr. Matt won't let us operate on Good Friday anymore.

PSA in case the person reads Yappi:
If you were driving your Chevy sedan turning into Rookwood around 915 this morning with an Elder Panthers license plate frame - your passenger side tailgate light is busted and out.

Finding ways to not gather as a community on Good Friday is an interesting way to grow and foster a parish. Interesting decision.
Not a single parish in NKY has fish fry on Good Friday. Not sure the reason, I'll have to ask. Not too many have one on Ash Wednesday either. I normally venture to the west side on those 2 days to get it, and St. Al's was one I went to last year, I think it was on Good Friday if I'm not mistaken. Guess I can't do that now.

We'd had a fish fry on Good Friday since I was a kid, so I didn't know any better. But it turns out many don't have them GF and AW because those are supposed to be solemn days. I get it, but I always thought we provided a good service on a good day to do so.

I think Victory does a great one on AW with their Holy Smokes team. The smoked salmon is supposed to be really good.

Actually, a couple years ago several of us we at St. Al's on Ash Wednesday prepping French fries and coleslaw () and two or three cars came through wondering when we were going to serve. Never occured to me to do it on AW. Moot point because we'd never be allowed.

Go to the Good Friday Mass.
Por que no los dos? More community gatherings are a good thing.
Probably belongs more so in the Beacons thread, but pastors like Matt aren't concerned with any community building outside the realm of the Mass and scripture study.

Of course, that realm is most important, but there should be more to our faith community. He doesn't care.

It would allow NRD Capital to get out of Frisch's ownership which they are evidently losing money hand over fist on given all of the evictions, Big Boy could reopen as many locations as they see fit under the Frisch's name without a lawsuit, and NNN Reit finds tenants for dozens of closed restaurants.

On a side note, St Paul’s in NKY has the best fish fries I’ve ever been too. Don’t know if they still do it post COVID but they used to have a different menu each week of Lent. Always very good, it was a real professional operation. They must have had someone from the restaurant industry running it. We haven’t gone since COVID maybe I’ll look into going again this year.

Never had theirs, I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip.

Another article about non-Frisch's Big Boy restaurants possibly opening in Cincinnati. It looks like the Bridgetown Rd. location could be reopening as well.
I wonder if the new Big Boy restaurant group will put 1000 island on their Big Boy Burgers here locally, or will they opt with the local favorite tartar sauce?

They may get people rioting if they don't use tartar sauce.

From the above channel 9 article: "Other differences between the chains include the secret sauce they put on Big Boy double deckers. The Michigan chain’s “famous” sauce has mayonnaise and pickles like Frisch’s, but adds horseradish, catsup and Tobasco sauce for an extra kick."
I'm think I'll probably prefer the Cincy version instead.
