All-Star Awards

Today is the 11th and by now the regional award meetings shouldve finished up. Does anyone have any records or reports on who won what in what regions? Any predictions for the state POY?

Here is my problem with the All State voting - people often say "vote for the best players" while some coaches vote based on the best positions. If you are voting for the best players - then why can a school only have a maximum of 2 players on each team ie. first team, second team, hon. mention. If a team just so happens to have the 7 best players, period, then all of those kids should have the right to all be on first team. Lets not play nice and vote decent kids on terrible teams over THE BEST PLAYERS. Which brings me to my next point - its 1st TEAM, 2nd TEAM. I believe it should be voting on the best team. 1st team - 1st best setter, top 2 OHs, top 2 MH's, and then voting on the POY of those. I really think OSHVBA needs to inform the coaches that its one or the other, and not both. I think certain kids get picked where they don't belong, while other kids are getting screwed because of the system in play..

I doubt that many coaches are voting by position. Most go by best player on down. Most times the best player on the best team gets the extra love.

I think any All-Star awards are bogus. Many good players do get 'screwed'. I really prefer to not look at it.

So I guess your kid didn't make 1st Team, bummer. :thumb:

For the most part I'd say the voting is pretty solid. The first teams for each region are almost always the top 7 players, maybe one or at most two getting snubbed. If you're looking for someone to blame for not placing yourself/your son/teammate higher either blame your coach for not actually nominating you or your athletic director for not scheduling enough teams so the coaches who are actually voting have never seen you play.

Or better yet, blame yourself for not making enough plays to become a player that is a surefire first/second team player...

Thanks Brambleberry for bringing up the other major issue:

The coaches have to nominate players early on (based on who they are projecting to be the better players), instead of nominating at the end of the season (based on merit).

I'm not going to call out any, but some of them are painfully obvious that they received recognition without really deserving it.

-And yes, the politics of it all sucks but it keeps everyone happy at the non-power house schools. The most deserving players often are snubbed, but it is what it is at this point.

Yeah, the vast majority of the season is finished by the time the players are nominated and voted on.

There really isn't a better way to go it than it is now, unless there was a better way to force coaches to vote (which might even make it worse since coaches will be voting for players they've never even seen before).

I think the DII preview has helped the top coaches get a little better estimation of the top players in the region, and Centerville's mid season tournament for the best DI schools has helped them over the years, no doubt.
