The fact that Maurice Clarett had 3 long TD runs totalling 230 yards and STILL rushed for another 181 yards against St Eds is still mind boggling to me. I remember watching that game on TV and couldnt believe- as great as Clarett was- that he was doing that against St Eds of all teams

While extremely impressive, St Edward in 2001 weren't the Eagles they are today. At that point St Edward had a 6-9 playoff record and wouldn't win their first State Championship in football until 2010.

Oh, in that case. Nevermind ;-)

St.Edward was 10-0, and was #1 in the region that year.

Two things Worm…first, I’m gonna need you to make a category “Longest Bad Snap to Punter Returned for a TD” and stick Bowden in there at #1. 🤣

Of course only you would know if there were others that could be listed along with Bowden and that’s a testament to you, my friend.

Also, there should be another playoff game on the WWR list in 1988 when we lost to Westerville North. I remember sitting by the 13” TV in my dorm at Kent State waiting for Chuck Galeti to report on the game and getting razzed by all my buddies about losing. I actually used to have a friend of a friend in Columbus 25 years ago who played for WN in that game and we discussed it one night in a bar. He had plenty of high praise for the original Raiders.

Sounds like you’re referring to Lynn’s now-viral play for Liberty against Ursuline. It was the last game that he played for them and it was at Mollenkopf. That TD actually got called back for a block in the back.

Yes they were and it will always be a great win for us. However, St. Eds was still “paying their dues” as a program back then. In fact, both of us were probably in a similar position around that time.

Without checking (don’t think that I could if I wanted to though 🤣), but I’m pretty sure that Cardinal Mooney beat Eds at least twice in the late 90’s. I know that the Cards beat em in ‘99. Either way, on paper, ‘01 was the year that everything started to come together for Eds before Harding humbled them at Kent.

Looking at the records on Joe Eitel, ‘01 seems to serve as an embryonic phase of what the Eagles’ program has snowballed into today. It’s the year that they found out that they could (at least) compete with the best of the best. Then again, a 3-7 Lakewood was on their schedule. Their program will probably never play against them again.

Maybe that’s why I contributed that to WGH, because it was at Mollenkopf. Thanks for helping my old brain lol. 🧠

Fella's I'm obviously a Kennedy guy, but grew up a block away from Mollenkopf Stadium and remember the times when Reserve and Harding played. My parents front yard was full of fans from both teams. And yes IMO they were the toughest two rivalries ever, maybe be Mooney and Ursuline at the time, or Campbell and Kennedy a few years later. But high school football was different. The entire city shut down for that Saturday afternoon game. Not real proud nowadays, but every bar was filled with East and West fights were very common in those joints. Now Lets talk about the best player I saw in my day, well I think could confirm. Omar Provitt was better than almost every one of the guys that made it to major colleges and the pros. He was actually that good. You couldn't cover him. HIs catches and returns were honestly magic. I'm sure some will disagree and that's cool, but IMO he was the best athlete to come out of Harding.

And I think the best over all from Kennedy was either Jimmy Coates, Scott Rindfuss, or Anthony Elzy. Back in the day I think WWR just had too many to mention. But Omar was the man from Warren.

Some great RB’s for sure. Elzy, Coates, Paolucci, Province and Buchanan would be my top 5. Rindfuss great speed but he was a one trick pony bounce everything to the outside, the top 5 weren’t afraid to hit it up between the tackles

Very good, more of a drop back passer. The Eagles at that time were in the Wing T so it didn’t quite equate to his skill set. Very good basketball player as well
