2024 VASJ Vikings Football **Official Thread**

VASJ played well. It was refreshing to see a reduction in penalties. The defense played well and had constant pressure on the QB. Mooney did not have much sucess moving the ball until the subs went in. The offense goes as Bo goes. Bo is a man playing against boys. His combination of speed and power are tough to contain. Unlike in past season the Vikings appear to have solid lines on both sides of the ball. If the line continues to allow Bo to reach the second level of the defense the Vikings could be a really tough out. The QB is a leader - but his height seems to limit his accuracy. He is at his best when he rolls out and has a clean view of the defense (like Baker Mayfield). When in the pocket his throws seem a bit high and off target. If the Vikings can add a potent passing attack to that running game - the sky could be the limit.
It will be interesting to see if VASJ wins the region, a very real possibility, if they will draw Toledo Central in semifinals or state game.

Update from Arlin Field

VASJ 20
Mansfield 0

Bo Jackson with 2 rushing TD’s
TJ Moore with 1 rushing TD

VASJ 236 yards of total offense in just 1 quarter! Insane!

With Toledo Central Catholics loss, St. Joes moved to #1 in Maxpreps state Division 3 rankings. Anyone see that coming 4 years ago?

Definitely did not see this coming about. If they continue to play the way they have been and carrying it over to their games against tougher opponents, it’s rightfully deserved. Need to ignore outside noise and continue to focus on the goal ahead.

Vikes need to ignore that noise and keep their head down. Keep grinding. Nothing has been accomplished yet. That #1 ranking won't buy you a downpayment on a booster dog.

The region is loaded. Whoever comes out of it will have TCC waiting for them. The season is still early. Health will be key for a deep run. The difference this year is the Vikings appear to have a solid line on both sides of the ball - which allows their skill players to shine. There is some huge match ups on the horizon. They cannot look ahead or let up because of their ranking. Everyone shoots for the team with the 1 in front of it.

My huge matchups do you mean tough matchups? Who they have coming up?

Aurora and Vasj have the weakest reg season schedules, Highland for the greenmen and ursuline for vikings are only real tests.

Chardon and Aurora could be the biggest test in the playoffs from reg 9, imho.

I will say so far, Mansfield could have been 2-0 heading into last weeks beatdown, and have historically a good program.

GlenOak may be D1 but their fans can’t be thrilled with how badly down they are.

Mooney could have pulled off an upset on LC in Week 1 and gave Steubenville fits last week.

Kenston, I can’t look past them as an easy win. They’re tough, they have good coaching and can come in swinging.

CCC has running clock all over this one. Just need to stay even keeled and avoid any bait that their players will try to get our guys ejected.

McDowell is usually tough but they may be dealing with a down year, plus they faced Mentor and Walsh who are no push overs themselves.

Dohn is a glorified scrimmage and will not count in standings. Honestly won’t be shocked if this gets canceled at some point. This was originally a game with Hartley traveling back to Cleveland but due to scheduling conflicts had to back out. But will be back on the schedule in 25.

Ursuline will be the best matchup on the schedule and be very highly anticipated. Won’t be surprised to see this game get a lot of press coverage.

STVM isn’t anything near where their state title teams were 10 years ago but can cause problems, pending how they are playing. I won’t look past St.V but this one can be another running clock game.

Gilmour is another ranked team in Region 9 that will very likely waltz right into week 10 unbeaten with their schedule. Joes beat them up pretty well last year and could do the same.

I guess we’ll find out!
If it were true, Kenston would’ve cleaned their clock twice last year. Instead, the Vikings made some adjustments and pulled off the win on the road in the playoffs. He’s not Chuck Kyle or Tiger Laverde but most of the playoff losses he’s taken have been at the hands of pretty good teams, like Ursuline last year and Glenville in 2021.

The Vikings roll on against Kenston with a 53-35 victory after a slow start in the 1st half. It was a sloppy game on special teams as 3 of the scores came off turnovers on special teams with two fumbles on a punt return and kick return. The 3rd coming from a blocked punt. The Bombers did capitalize on the miscues.

The big news of the night is from Bo Jackson getting knocked out early in the game due to a knee injury. Hopefully it’s not a serious injury but is significant enough that Bo will very likely be sitting out against CCC and possibly McDowell in Week 6.

The Vikings improve to 4-0 on the year as they look to go 5-0 next Saturday afternoon over in Slavic Village.
