2024 Cincinnati Bengals

Bengals are lousy at thinking out of the box. Should have traded Higgins, for draft picks than need be could have moved up to get Murphy. Have no problem drafting a lineman to protect burrow but Mims is injury prone can't stay healthy in college expect him to be healthy in NFL? Maybe. Now you have a player in Hendrickson who wants traded - not a fan of keeping players that don't want to be part of the team. Could havetraded Hendrickson for draft collateral.

It’s easy to say “should have traded Higgins” but what can you get in return? Yes Guggins is a good player but anyone wanting to trade for him will have to give him a new contract - this pushes down the value the Bengals would get in a trade for him. The two SF wr’s, neither one was moved last night for a 1st rd pick, do you think the 49ers will find someone willing to give up a 2nd for either (and then give them a new deal)? I’d guess the Steelers best offer to SF for one of their wr’s is a 3rd pick. Both of the SF wr’s are better than Higgins, comparable but slightly better.

If the Bengals let Higgins play out his contract this year and then sign as a FA next year with someone, the Bengals will probably get a 3rd or 4th rd compensatory pick - it’s a formula that is derived from what the new contract is.

Regardless, looks like the Bengals will be trying to out score opponents next year. The run defense looks shaky at best but it’s only April - things can change.

Bengals be Bengals; they only pick players with injury histories in the first rd
Look for DT Newton to be still available in the 2nd rd, they desperately need a DT with a injury history that the other 31 teams pass on.

Good points, I doubt if Higgins is worth more than a 2nd rd pick but they could have used that money they saved (paying Higgins) for FA this spring.

Also a huge key difference in Mims is he is an elite athlete. Scored a 9.5/10 RAS (relative athletic score), which has him 67 out of 1,314 OTs drafted since 1987. It’s the first elite athlete they’ve drafted on the OL in a decade. While it didn’t work out then with Paul Alexander, Pollack worked wonders with athletic OL in Dallas. None of the current OL (including newly added Trent Brown) have a RAS over 5.5/10.

That is all great if he stays healthy and that is a big if.

So you spent a 1st round pick on someone with 8 starts in college AND he won’t see the field his Rookie season. Awful pick.

Trent Brown has started every game of a given season just twice in nine years, missed 5+ games six times and has played in half the games (or less) three times. Mims will play this year.
Then why waste the $ signing him?

Don't really have an issue with the pick. I would have preferred Bowers or the DT from Texas, but they both went off the board in the handful of picks before the Bengals were on the clock.

Always seem to have issues with injuries and depth on the OL. Odds are he ends up playing some if not substantially this year before taking over as the starting RT next year.

The edge guys on the board were a little light in the pants for my liking and may both be more 3-4 OLB type rushers.

Given the way the cards fell, IMO they either needed to take Mims or one of the CBs that slid. They took Mims.

all offseason most of you were bitching to get burrow protected. they draft a guy, albeit with injury issues and still complaining. bengals fans are the worse. lol. so since he may not start this season hes already a terrible pick? wouldn't any tackle be sitting this year b/c of the offseason signing? if Mims didn't declare early he was being projected as a top 5 pick next year. anyways, if there was a travesty, they didn't trade up to get murphy from texas.

Because there’s no way of knowing how the draft will go and who will be there at 18? Clean up holes in FA then draft best available.
Draft based on need. RT isn’t a need with Brown. And if you’re worried about Brown’s health, sign a difft RT

Go on the browns forum. It is ok to criticize not everybody is a homer.

Brown may or may not stay healthy. Have no problem with picking a RT and Mims if he stays healthy could be the answer at RT, if he stays healthy.

And Mims has started a total of 8 college games so when one is injured hopefully the other one will be healthy.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the Bengals selection.

Perfectly said. They got a top 10 talent whose main knock is inexperience. Now, he gets to learn behind two very experienced vets.

Bengals oline depth and future starting outlook was abysmal. Mims is your RT next year and probably your LT after Orlando is done.

He will also see the field early in jumbo packages.

Again, how’s he going to protect Burrow on the Bench?

Bengals fans: protect burrow! You can’t keep signing these older one year tackles! Burrow will get hurt if they don’t address the OL!

Also Bengals fans: what a terrible pick

Fautanu was there; if nothing else, he would start at G this year; instead the Stealers get him.

I was a big Fautanu fan and thought he was the safer pick, with Mims being the pick with a much higher ceiling.

I don’t know that they would have made Fautanu the LG though. They love Volson even if fans don’t.

So do you take the more versatile guy who can play potentially anywhere or the guy who could be an All-Pro in 2-3 years? One has a higher floor, one has a higher ceiling.

I can see both arguments.

Truth is, the Bengals lucked out that there were a number of great options sitting there at 18.
