Looks like they're going with both a 15U and 16U team this year. Quite a few new players from the Barons which is usually a good thing. The 16U team is pre/post while the 15U team is full year. I'm guessing the 16 U team will supply at least half the roster for the Prep team given the amount of losses from this past year. In other words, the Prep team will be very young. Hopefully like the Boehm and Langermeier teams of the mid to late teens.

Saw a little bit of the 15s and 16s this weekend. The 15s look like they usually do this time of year. Some decent players but not much continuity. Standouts were the G (Beringuel) and a couple of defenseman - Stipanovich and Krupsa.

The 16s were outstanding. Both old and new faces excelled. The new kids who stood out were White on D along with Forsythe, Bradley and Rose.

Liam Hill is really a fun player to watch. Smooth skating defenseman who really controls the puck. Think one of the Hughes brothers. 😀. Of course Bleick and Miyoshi were solid as well.

These kids plus a few others will fill out the Prep team roster. Should be an exciting few years watching these kids play and progress.

16U Cats seem to have had a pretty good season - just above .500.

Beat some traditional powers in AAA hockey (albeit in down years) and have a few more games to go before joining the Prep team. Some interesting cuts coming up for the Prep team.

The 15U team isn't faring so we'll. They're not as good relative to the competition. There is some good talent but they won't feed the Prep team this year at all. Maybe in a year or two a few will help.

New format to the playoffs this year

double byes for the top 4 seeds in each region

Still doesn't solve the disparity for only several teams each season with a legitimate chance to win the state title though

As for that, Toledo St. Francis & Ignatius seem to be the top 2 squads this year...thoughts?

Interesting take on the playoffs. It's a step in the right direction. A better choice would be to limit the teams in the playoffs to those who can actually compete. Why the heck is a team fielding 8 skaters and getting hammered 10-0 even in the playoffs? Way too many teams in the playoffs. Way too many.

I definitely think that its a case of people not understanding how hockey in Ohio truly works.

There is a clear divide between the haves and the haven nots.

It's a damn shame that the state has clearly shown hockey is not a priority for them as it does not bring in the dollars. Going off of that, the way they treat the teams, students, fans, etc. is abysmal. Forcing them to stand several rows back from the boards so they are further away from the action, 9 AM semifinal start times on a Thursday, forcing them to move locker rooms in the middle of a game.

If you're going to have the final four there, do it right. If not, move it to a place that actually cares about the event and the students in question...cough, cough, BGSU...speaking of which, BGSU would be perfect! Smaller venue, but enough to make it a true championship atmosphere, lots of history, plus, the Toledo-area does not have any championships and this would be the perfect opportunity to do so.

Amen.

I couldn't agree more. Having the tournament in Columbus is a terrible decision. They are second class citizens there and always will be. I loved when the tournament was in Brooklyn (probably too small) and BG. BG is PERFECT!

Thanks!

Was looking everywhere for it.

Overall at first glance, not a bad schedule.

Wondering why there's no Canadian teams or their usual games vs. top PA teams?

Probably due to scheduling difficulties, conflicts, etc.
It was just posted yesterday. Still no roster but I can guess based on returnees and new players.

Returnees:
G - Dominic Filizetti
F - Otto Bafus, Sam Elwell
D - Jack Wood, Zack Bleick, Adam Ruyf, Charlie Banaszak, and Nolan Ignacio
Kids who could play F or D - Raiden Miyoshi, Gino Piazza

that's 10

New to Prep probables
G - AJ Chiaravelle/Blake Benedictis
D - Liam Hill, Aiden White, Ethan Liu and Gavin Marziani
F - Cade Bradley, Preston Forsythe, TJ Hulec, Nick Miller, Patrick Rose, Kyle Rucinski

That's 12 more for 22 total. They won't need 3 goalies so I'm interested how #2 will shake out although Filizetti will play most minutes. They also won't need 9 defensemen so I think the kids receiving the most minutes here would be Bleick, Ignacio, Hill, White, Ruyf and Banaszak.

The team would be just 7 seniors, 5 juniors and 10 sophomores. I don't see any freshmen making the team this year.

Go Cats!

My best glance at an outlook for this upcoming season as scrimmages get underway
  • Brooklyn
    • St. Ignatius
    • St. Edward
    • and everyone else...really wish there was some more parity to this district, but these two are clearly ahead of everyone else (kind of similar to how the SEC and BIG 10 run college football)

  • Kent
    • US - I know they lost a lot
    • Gilmour
    • Walsh - They seem to play spoiler more often than not

  • BGSU
    • Toledo St. Francis - I believe they are the best team on the state (at the start) of the season...They've had depth for the past few years and this is the year it could show
    • Northview - Blue-collar team that always gives people fits
    • Findlay - No one too special or stand-outs, but always solid/even and across the board and capable of an upset
    • Bowling Green - Very similar to Findlay, very happy they are back

  • Columbus
    • Olentangy Liberty
    • Upper Arlington
    • St. Charles
    • Berlin
Similar to some thoughts in the past by many people, high school hockey is really a niche sport in Ohio. It's not as popular as football or basketball, but those that follow it and are fans of it are passionate about it. These people are the ones that get rightfully upset at the blatant disrespect by those that administer the sport. Going off of this, I think there needs to be a reorganization of the post-season. In no way is this an "everyone gets a trophy" commentary, just a commentary on ways to make our great sport even better for all those involved.

Interesting...I would chalk that up as a new team trying to get used to each other and typical early season jitters.

No doubt they will get used to each other and become a team that no one wants to see in the playoffs.
I hope so. I have no idea who played or didn't or how good SC is.

Looks like a typical Ignatius roster...solid returning guys/veterans and a good mix of young players.

Going off of my last point, I think the usual contenders will appear around the mid-December mark.

They posted the varsity roster. No big surprises. 24 kids on the roster - 7 seniors, 9 juniors and 8 sophomores. No frosh this year. They show 13 F and 9 D with the 2 goalies. They'll have to sit 3 or 4 kids every night.

I'm excited to see the newcomers in Rose, White, Bradley, and Forsythe. I also like seeing Gino Piazza moved back to F along with Miyoshi. Both were on D last year.

I think the D pairings will be fun to see as there is a LOT of talent on that back end. Maybe Bleick/Ignacio like last year followed by Hill/White and then maybe McLaughlin/Ruyf? You never know how much kids have improved from year to year.

Should be a fun year.

Go Cats!

Walsh goalie was very good. Cats started out slow but got the offense together in the 2nd period. Once they got the first goal in the 3rd the wheels came off quickly for WJ. I think they may have had 8-9 guys in the box at one point.

Here's a head scratcher.

Is it? I have no idea how good ed's is this year.

Cats played okay but lost a few in Pittsburgh this weekend.

I'm thinking the Cats will improve a lot as the season goes along like someone suggested above.
